as many of you may know, chinese new year is tomorrow. the board of ed in my state (nyc) does not recognize chinese new year as a official holiday so therefore i will either be forced to go to school or live with a cut on my record. because of that, im planning to go unfourtantely.

how many people here are not going to school because of chinese new year?

Honestly, I am Indian but if we started celebrating everyone's holidays, no work would get done. None of my holidays get celebrated until the following Sunday and I can live with that 🙂

The only non traditional holidays that people get off are religious ones i think and I dont think chinese new year's counts as one.

I go to school in NY also and I got that day off. I got to Binghamton University, I know all SUNY's get it off and NYC also. Your telling me that the Jews can have a holiday for their new year, but the Chinese can't because we aren't in China?

Religious versus national holidays (in the sense as its another nation's, not our own)?

agreed

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving don't seem like religious holidays to me.

I don't understand what you meant? Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year.

They are our nation's holidays. I don't expect other nations to celebrate our holidays.

I don't remember getting it off at UB.
Why not have a holiday for every holiday in every country?

I was under the impression that it has some religious significance as well. I'm not Jewish, so I really don't know.

maybe we just get some holidays off because they were influential on our country in some way. im sure there are reasons for all of them...so suck it up if yours isnt celebrated. i doubt the chinese new year really has anything to do with the US, or ever has for that matter.
