I hate people with lifted trucks. They all blind you cus they don't readjust or relocate their headlights and all drive like idiots cus they think they are so cool. Also 90% of people with lifted trucks never take them off-roading. Just as bad as rice.

If a semi could be made safer it would be.

1)Ban tandem trailers

2)Make them smaller

3)Make them lighter(load limits)

Semis can very easily be made safer- there just comes a point where they are considered 'safe enough' and are allowed promote commerce.

Is it not your business if you are rear-ended by this truck AND YOU DIE?

Show of hands from anyone here bitching who got run over by a monster truck in the last year.

Didn't think so. Now kindly STFU and mind your own business.

What if what if what if IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF...omfg the sky is falling.

What if a plane with 400 people falls out of the sky and everyone dies? What if it crashes on YOU while you're driving to work? Oh but that's acceptable risk because getting to your destination an hour earlier is a convenience *you* don't want to give up, you just want *everyone else* to give things up.

Turn off the TVs and go outside and see the sun set and quit being a bunch of paranoid sissies with threatened penises.

They can't bitch when they are no longer alive.

I live in a town where every teenage boy and girl wishes for a lifted truck when they turn 16. I believe that people like this are compensating for something.

There is always risk in life, the point is to manage that risk where it's obvious and practical to do so. We need semi's to deliver almost everything we use/need so being on the road with them is an "acceptable" risk. Aircraft accidents/fatalities are rare events so the chance of an accident is a very small risk/benefit ratio. In the case of hugely lifted trucks the risk isn't that bad only because of the low number of them on the road, and what is the benefit here? one persons ego, that's about it..

There's a truck that looks similar to that one in the OP's post for sale around where I work... the tailgate reads "CLIFFORD : The Big Red Dog"

Like any of the douchbags that drive their honda's and BWM's at 100+ and slam into the back of slower cars.

You see articles all the time about street racers killing bystandards and other motorists all the time. I've haven't seen any articles about a lifted truck driving over a car and killing the people in it.

I have. A few years ago there was a guy in a lifted Nissan pickup truck who ran a red light and hit and killed some guy in a regular sedan, the bumper height of his truck impacted where the other guys head was, killed him instantly. There was a lawsuit against the company that manufactured and sold the lift in which the company lost the suit.

These things should NOT be allowed on public roads nor are they legal yet I see trucks with crazy ass lifts on them all the time on the roadways around here.

Ban any vehicle with more than 80HP. Nobody needs more than that to get to work. Anybody here who has more power than that has a tiny penis. Everybody knows this.

It means it isn't any more dangerous than legal vehicles already on the road. If I am going to get hit in the rear, I would much rather get hit by a truck like that which would likely climb the back of my car than something like an Escalade that would just plow into me like a brick wall and force my car to try and dissipate all the energy. Despite the considerable weight of that truck, it isn't going to pancake your typical car just by driving on top of it. The lift in and of itself is not an additional danger to anyone except convertibles and the occupants of the truck itself. The height of the headlights is much more of a safety hazard than the truck itself.

stupid logic.

vehicles are engineered for accidents with frames and crumple zones. That is all based on being hit at standard heights. A large lifted vehicle rolling over you is much more likely to kill or injure you as cars are NOT engineered for that.

An impact from a bugatti veyron going 45 mph into the back of my 2004 Honda Civic coupe VS that bullshit truck going 45 in to the back of my car, which would be worse?
Saying that I am rolling at 10 mph in trafic, the veyron would probably tear through the back but not kill me while the truck would roll on top crushing the top of my car down on to me

The Veyron, of course, becuase I'd be much more distraught over a million dollars wrecking itself into my life vs some heavily financed POS truck with some redneck lift job.

Height restrictions aren't the same everywhere. Would have to assume that is legal where ever they are located. Not exactly a conspicuous vehicle the cops would miss. If it wasn't legal, I doubt the owner would be taking it to the mall.

While the FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) do regulate the bumper height for cars (no higher than 20"), and, since they are Federal standards, are indeed the same everywhere, the FMVSS does not regulate truck/SUV bumper heights. That's the loophole being exploited by this particular truck.

Now, the truck in the picture is still illegal for on-road use, however. A separate section of the FMVSS states that headlights may be no higher than 54" above the ground and the lift on the truck in that photo easily puts the headlights above the Federal maximum height.

Which is ridiculously high and about 2 1/2' higher than the top of the bumper of most cars.

If true, think it is insane that FMVSS does not regulate truck/SUV bumpers. Why that is allowed is beyond me.

Most headlights ARE above the top bumper in most cars 🙂

There is also a lower limit, which caused some British sports cars to be raised in the US to comply.

There's no "if true" about it, it is true. You're welcome to look through FMVSS 108 yourself if you're skeptical.

As for why it's allowed, the reason is so that things like semi trucks and buses can exist. I agree that it ought to be more tightly written though.

Only the tiniest of vehicles can do with 80HP, my last car (Escort) was 88HP and was badly underpowered, even for it's small size. I used to joke that it's AC could be used for an extra E-brake. Not everyone can do with this size car and there are plenty of mid-sized V6's that get good mileage around..

That is poor logic. I would rather be hit by it than a semi as well, what does that have to do with the safety of this? Isn't this like being ok with one engine in the two engine plane you're on just dying because at least the pilot isn't also drunk?

In addition, if you ever drive behind a semi you will notice a reinforced beam running between the two tires. This beam is specifically there (by regulation) to prevent a driver hitting the semi in the rear from being decapitated. It prevents the car from going UNDER the semi.

However, because this IS a car show, it's likely this fellow drives the truck rarely, if ever. In which case he may even get special dispensation to drive on the roads, like the super-long trucks that are only allowed to drive 3 or 4 hours a day at very specific times. It's hard to say really without talking to the fellow who drove it.
