Why is there both 1% and 2% milk?

Cow's milk contains, on average, [...] 3.6% fat
I would say there is a fair amount of difference between them, since people say there is a difference between full fat and others.

1% (skimmed) is nasty like water, 2% is bearable and better for you than full fat.

There's a huge taste difference between 1% and 2%. To me, 1% is perfect. Compared to it, the 2% is thick and too sweet/creamy for me. As for the regular milk (full fat version), it may as well be white paint with sugar. *pukes*

I actually prefer the taste of nonfat to 1%; however I'll use 1% for recipes requiring milk because it comes out better. But for drinking, I'm a nonfat fan.

edit: I also like unsweetened iced tea, and prefer diet sodas to regulars, simply as matters of taste. Am I weird or what.

Either you misread that, or you are buying "fat-enriched" milk.

Whole milk (about 3.5%) has about 8 grams of fat per glass, 5g of saturated fat.
2% milk contains 5g of fat per serving and 3g of saturated fat.
1% milk has about 3g fat and 1.5g saturated fat per serving.
Skim milk has about .5g fat or less per serving.

One 8oz glass of whole milk would contain about 1/4 of the daily saturated fat for a normal adult diet.

Not quite sure what information Jedi is looking at to get 12% fat for milk.

Agreed. This is the exact reason I prefer Skim milk.

We used to have milk.... then the cerial people decided it was too fattening, so they changed the side of their boxes to only show nutrition for 2% milk.

Then they again decided 2% was too fattening, so now they changed their box again, now it only records nutrition for 1% milk.

Again they decided 1% was unhealthy, and now they list only nutrition for Skim (.5%) Milk.

Eventually they'll have us putting just plain water on our cerial.

DAM THOSE FREAKING CERIAL PEOPLE... I LIKE MY 2% MILK

Only people who have quite a bit of food/drink preferences really notice a huge difference between 1% and 2%.
To me I can taste a little difference, but I don't care too much between 1% taste and 2% taste although I would say 1% is healthier than 2%. If I buy milk it is usually 1%.

ah... no wonder... i'm always a fat milk fan.

so 2% was suprisingly good...while 1% and skim tastes like %$^&ing water.

Skim milk - delicious

See, it's just varying degrees of deliciousness.

It's a tool of compromise for households where one spouse wants 2% and the other one wants skim.

Growing up we got the milk straight out of the bulk tank!
Ofcourse, due to advances in milk production the taste changed and it wasn't considered as healthy as it use to be. We had to stop doing that and went to buying gallons of 2% milk.

I like cream so whole and 2% tastes great to me but I do the 1% just to reduce the fat intake. Once you get to use it, just like diet colas, it tastes fine.

I notice a taste difference between all 3 types. Another thing that not a lot of people realize is how much sugar is in milk too.

I drink skim because you think about how many grams of saturated fat per glass (and a "glass" is pretty small)

As long as it's very cold, it's all good.
