Why is the US military budget like 350 billion dollars ?

Thats billion with a b - each year. This is where your tax dollars are going. An amount of money that is really quite incomprehensible. It dwarfs amounts spent on welfare, education and healthcare. We could eradicate poverty in this country. We could do so much more -- how stupid of us. 😱

Because Bush feels it's his duty to police the world.

Did you not notice the ass-kicking we delivered in response to 3,000 of our civilians being killed?

We would be truly stupid if we were unwilling, or unable, to defend ourselves.

Pull your head out & see the real world, that money is well spent.

Sure, we could erradicate poverty in the country. But how would we defend ourselves? Some other country sees us with no millitary and were done with.

The purpose of the Government is defense, not feeding poor people.
Not that it is a bad thing, but it is not the purpose of our Government.

Like they did to Canada, right?

A = We can thus buy more tanks then Canada 😉
B = Ever notice that the US helps more countries than any other
C = We seem to have a few enemies out there
D = Modern weapons are expensive, but save lives
E = To defend idiots like yourself

We spend $350 billion on the military? I would have thought we spent a lot more. Personally, I think we should spend a lot more considering the way Clinton gutted the military.

We could eradicate poverty in this country.
Why is it my responsibility to pay for slackers? Why should I have to pay for the government to offer handouts?

You mess with someones younger brother if the older one was 75 feet tall and 40 tons?

Basically, the constitution provides for a National Defense very explicitly, and National welfare very very very loosely.

The money spent on defense doesn't bother me at all. High tech weapons cost big money and save American lives. Without a kickass, first class military we wouldn't need to worry about education (the few who could read would be studying the Koran), welfare (I can't believe anyone would want to spend more money on welfare, it's been a waste of time and money) and healthcare (there would be no healthcare because (see above) there would be no education.

Canada doesn't need to spend a lot on their military, they're sitting right on top of the world's most powerful nation. We have a good 30% of their borders covered for them, we're treaty members with them (NATO), and they're our neighbors.

I don't mind them benefitting from our military presence, but the fact is they've got themselves a damn good deal.

You need to lay off the crack pipe. Defense spendin hardly "dwarfs" other spending, particularly healthcare spending.

And as for "eradicating poverty in this country," i guess you slept through, ohhhh, the last 40 or so years of our country's history, and the "war on poverty" ?

Toilet seats don't come cheap.

I was reading an article about that. Yes, the government overspends on certain things. But some of those numbers just comes out of how they do the paperwork. 500 toilets and a B2 would come out to 1.5 million dollars each. That's the gist of it anyway.

Wrong: 350 billion is 17% of the federal budget and is currently 3.5 % of the GDP. At one time we spent 7% of the GDP on defense so it has gone down a lot. 80 percent of the federal tax dollars goes to social security, welfare and medicare!

So basically you want to turn us into a bunch of gutless commies right? Being the international police force (which people like when it suits them and don't when it doesn't) isn't exactly cheap.

And what's so great about welfare money and healthcare? That money could be better *spent* by giving it back to the people it belongs to.
