Why is the Casey Anthony trial a national story?

Yup, and she was also let go (or posted bail) and was re-arrested a number of times too IIRC.

Along with the grandmother being the one to make the 911 call and mention in that call that her car smelled like it had a dead body in it. There is a lot to this story that is unique enough to make it at least as interesting as the waste that was the OJ trial.

It wasn't just b/c she was a decent looking whitegirl... It was also the cold blooded sociopathic nature of the crime, such as how she was partying it up in a club very shortly after knowing the kid was dead.

I read an article in the New Yorker a few months ago about a woman that hired a hit man to murder her ex, and the hit went down right in front of their children. It was unbelieveably heinous, but it wasn't a national story.

OJ was big because he was already a celebrity and it was a black man getting away with killing a white woman.

Because there are too many news outlets and they have to find something to fill all that air time.

Also....because there is an audience. If people didn't watch those shows, they'd go away.

and Ron Goldman...

Americans are interested in these types of stories. they can't be bothered by little things like the economy, foreign policy, ongoing wars in the Mideast, etc

Passion killer, you're too much
You're the only one I wanna touch
I see your face every time I dream
On every page, every magazine
So wild so free so far from me
You're all I want, my fantasy

Two words: Nancy Grace

QFT

There is nothing new or unusual about this case. There are many more disturbing cases and thousands of similiar ones. Nancy Grace has built her career on these cases and drummed up the false sense that this is unusual. But with hundreds of new channels to chose from what do you expect other than self serving journalism.

Women on trial that are facing the death penalty almost always make national news.

TOT MOM TOT MOM TOT MOM

i live in central florida and the local channels (abc, cbs etc) all disregard all normal programming for constant all day coverage of this thing, its insane. its like a sporting event, every RECESS they give you their EXPERT LEGAL ANALYSIS. they spend at least half the local evening news on the stupid thing.

still would hit it😉 :awe:

lol reason #6
"6) No matter what happens between us I can never be the bad guy in the relationship. When you can end every argument with, “well at least I didn’t kill my kid” you win every time. I could cheat on her with her friends on a weekly basis, steal her car, and get caught peddling naked pictures of her on the internet … none of it would be worse than what she did. I never thought it was possible to have an upper hand forever in a relationship but this seems to be the only way."

Because the news does not report on what is important. That is boring and does not drive ad revenues. You need things that you can senationalize because (
shockingly
) people are more apt to watch it thus driving ad revenues.

you really shouldent be shocked by that statement
I shouldn't be shocked because of the source, or the statement?

I'm surprised anyone would think that these 2 things are even remotely similar in scale/importance to justify a statement like that.

I'm not saying this chick shouldn't have gotten national attention, but comparing her amount of national news coverage to 9/11 where 1000's of people died and it sparked a war seems retarded. They aren't even in the same ballpark.

x10000000000000000

I haven't been following the trial, but I'm surprised she didn't just plead out to get life. No way she doesn't get the needle when convicted.

If she's sentenced to death there'll be decades of appeals. Compare the number of inmates that FL has on death row to those who've actually been executed. The DP isn't much of a threat outside of Virginia or Texas.

the statement about being tired of hearing about it

Update: Here's a story on CNN about why the trial is such a sensation:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/06/17/casey.anthony.trial.drama/

And a few choice exerpts:

At Fields BMW in suburban Winter Park, no one has switched channels in the customer lounge since testimony began four weeks ago.

"I don't think anybody's brave enough to grab the remote," said Whitney Lore, the cashier.

The drama sucked in Trevor Ball this week as he waited for his wife's BMW to be serviced. He fired off a Casey update to her by text: The prosecution rests.

Wow, seriously Trevor? Get a life you fucking tool.

Half the people who turn on their TVs in Orlando during the daytime are watching the trial, says Steve Hyvonen, news director at WKMG, a CNN affiliate. That usually only happens here when a hurricane hits.

"It's the biggest thing that has happened in Orlando in years," said Mike Boslet, editor of Orlando magazine. "The whole world is watching."

No Mike, the whole world is having it rammed down their throats.

Why the Anthony case?

"You've got this attractive young mother and this horrible death of a child," said Robert Thompson, who teaches television and popular culture at Syracuse University.

cute child. That's all you need to know.

maybe where you are, but not here...

It's not on the local news, except for a 5second update..
CNN only mentions it on the idiot Nancy Grace..
HLN has some recaps, but it's not all day long. Only from 1p-3p do they ever "focus" on it.

The only channel where it's an All-Day thing, and this is only from 7a-1p, is TruTV. They're simulcasting the trial when it's "live".

It's not being rammed down anyone's throat... unless you want it rammed down yours.
