As he is now, bfg, apoppin, creig, myself, caveman, etc etc etc can stalk him like a supermodel if we so desire, and he has nowhere to hide.

He'll just hide behind the moderators, through nVidia, like he always did. This site has been rapidly declining in their integrity for quite awhile now, in some extremely obvious ways. You hadn't noticed?
I believe I can speak for my fellow Mods, the last thing that is going to happen is for Rollo to break the rules and hide behind us. Like Derek said, he's on a short leash, an extremely short one at that.

I'm not on anyone's "leash".

I really have no compelling reason to post here, so I'll voluntarily quit. It's not worth the baggage.
So you are saying that you can't abide by the rules? Others who have been perma banned have been let back with the same stipulations, why should you be any different? If you follow the rules you don't have a thing to worry about.

No, I'm saying I don't need the drama. I don't have any reason to post here other than I missed talking to some of the people.

This has turned into a sideshow.

Thank you AT for allowing me to return and say hello to some old friends, I appreciate that and all the work Derek in particular has put into this.

I think it would just be easier for all concerned if I was not an active member of this community.

Interesting choice of an Avatar.

You created you baggage and now do not want to carry it along.

LOL, here's a tip: Don't say you're not on anyone's leash when mods and admins have already said you are.

I told the whole truth. I didn't try to hide Rollo or bring him back in a way that would give him an easy time or let him hide behind some other persona. Don't you think that would have been easier for me? for him? yeah. but it's not the right thing to do. the members here deserve open honest communication and not to have things like that hidden from them.

i am quite certain you tell the truth and are not holding anything back. i also believe most of the membership believes you. The problem is that the last time there were real consequences. "Feelings" were really hurt by the "AEG thing" - members were wrongly banned over a lie - and 100% of the ire was finally focused on Rollo who also shouldered 100% of the responsibility even though there were others who were unscathed by the scandal or never outed.

i am NOT defending [n]Rollo - i originally worked very hard to expose him ... all i am defending is the administration's right to allow him to return - just as they have done with other members who have "damaged" our community. Do i have to name at least one other who also caused a huge scandal? - who was NOT welcomed back by the general membership - yet is currently a productive member.

i am also quite surprised that [n]Rollo did not expect this "sideshow" ... however, as with all sideshows, they tend to attract less attention .. over time. As to being on a "leash" .. all of us are - by choosing to abide by the rules.

You created you baggage and now do not want to carry it along.
Well, it IS heavy :p

i think part of the problem is [n]Rollo's style. Most would return quietly ... and completely ignore this thread about them. They would ease back into Video ... only posting helpful links and refraining from any controversy whatsoever. But then he appears to be a 'no compromise' kind of guy. And is attracting the flack .. and ultimately i really think he likes the attention.

:D

I would have been more open to the idea of giving him a second chance if he hadn't started his trademark SLI marketing again, almost right after he was let back on.

I just noticed his user rating by the way, from back when those were still enabled. It's completely off the charts.

I'm a bit surprised this thread has gone on in this manner for so long. I pretty much agree with 'poppin (A reserved for when he changes employers), and while I didn't partake much in the video forums during the previous "Rollo tenure", I have a strong feeling that if these types of derogatory remarks were made about most members or mods the ban stick would have taken a few swings. I also agree with the feeling that adding the "N" to his name is recognition that the administration is supportive of this manner of discussion. Hasn't it been confirmed that he's not an actual employee? I often get free products from various companies for certain testing and such, should all that do so be required to adjust their user names? Don't we have a couple mods around here that go by alternate user IDs to hide their corporate affiliation, that's a much more direct relation without nearly this level of noisy feedback. Since he's been gone I've seen many flame worthy discussions between supporters of various companies or standards, if you feel it's worthy to take on this one feel free to truly do the world good and spend similar effort on all those categories.

They read all the reasons. But they also know when they're not getting the full story. I read everything Derek said, but that doesn't mean I have to believe it as the full truth. Heck, Rollo already is the one who showed us why we cannot believe everything everyone says. And I already agree with you that I'm not "special" here in any way, but I can say I have never lied and deceived for monetary gains on this forum, if that's worth anything. :D

Rollo could have returned any time he wanted under a different name, or back when amnesty & forgiveness was first being offered, but he chose now to return and under the same name that brings back many negative memories to a lot of the users. Someone is holding back something, that is not being said in this thread.

I now truly believe that Derek is being totally above the table with us. He would hardly have gone through all the work of responding to our questions in such detail if he were trying to hide something. It would have been far easier (and safer) for him to lock this thread and that would have been the end of matters. But instead, he is making every effort to ensure that we are being informed of the rationale behind his decisions.

Such an effort speaks very highly of Derek. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours he must put in to keep Anandtech running, much less to implement new ideas and policies. I'm sure those many hours cut into his personal life on evenings and weekends. But yet he still took the time to respond to many of us who had concerns regarding Rollo's reinstatement. Anandtech is VERY lucky to have someone that dedicated here.

We have come a LONG way from the days before Rollo's ban. Back then, the Video Forum was a no man's land where angels (and Moderators, apparently) feared to tread. We were basically left to fend for ourselves and it showed. Flamefests were the norm and when a Moderator DID happen to wander in there (completely by accident, I'm convinced), he would stagger back out hours later with his "thread lock" button smoking and a dazed look on his face.

Today, I can't tell you the last time I saw a locked thread in Video. Compared to back then, we now live in a state of blissful calm. Yes, there is still the occasional flareup or exchange of words, but no more so than any other forum. Part of this can be attributed to the banning of Rollo, but we mostly have people like Derek and the Moderators to thank. Their efforts at making our Forums a better place to visit have not gone unnoticed.

Will we always agree with the changes made to AT policy? No, of course not. Any change will always result in pleasing some people and upsetting others, especially with a community the size of ours. This thread is a prime example of the "upsetting others" variety. :) But times change and Anandtech must remain flexible as well. These forums are a work-in-progress and will probably always remain so. Derek's willingness to maintain an "open door" policy will allow us to add our opinions regarding these changes and hopefully influence the direction Anandtech will take.

Thank you again, Derek, for taking the time to explain AT policy to us and for allowing us to voice our concerns instead of simply locking the thread, leaving us to stew in resentment and frustration.

For once, i agree with Rollo!

BTW, ChrisRay is an example of a helpful poster who works for nV; his benchmarks are insightful, & he doesn't try to push marketing crap around.

Rollo tends to argue, attack, & cause chaos instead, which most of us have not missed.

why don't you put the fact that he is affiliated w/ nvidia under his name? like you have "AnandTech Editor", just put "Nvidia Affiliate" under his since you guys seem hell bent on letting the viral marketing in and do whatever they want -

i must say i have lost some respect for the forum seeing this go on, i thought there was more integrity from the upper management here. guess the bottom line $$$ is more important than integrity for some :(

and whats even sadder is that upper management went out on a limb for him, tarnish the site and spend time defending him and the decision and he throws his toys down and runs away because he can't understand why people making such a big deal about this, just walk away. At the very least take the heat for what you made and don't bite the hand that feeds you. Oh and with your new avatar how about you sell off all the new gear you get every 6 months and send the money to charity. I think I have a x300 you can rock.

Rollo aside ANYBODY who does this anywhere should be tarred and feathered. I think all of this is the cyber version of that.

Since I suspect I'll be granted a vacation for my parody of Rollo's quote in my previous post in this thread...... I'll simply state that originally I was shocked that Rollo was allowed to return.

Now, as much as I can appreciate Derek's obvious efforts to try to make this appear to be the right thing to as far as the community is concerned, the small amount of Rollo's posts since his return convinces me that nothing has really changed.

Vacation or no vacation, I refuse to partake in AT's video forum as long as Rollo continues to be a member here. (or whatever his latest reincarnation happens to be). I understand I post very little in the video forum these days, but I'm done......End of story...

yeah, I understand. video has completely gone to hell in the past week. we all need to boycott it immediately and indefinitely so that rollo can make up new ways to foist 7950gx2's on n00bs. either that or we can actually just keep doing what we've been doing all along and ignore/chastise him and others as needed.
