Anyone else notice this?
Yep, you see it all the time. Some folks just have different priorities in life than a nice home or car. Get something with 4 wheels, put some subs and an amp in it and cruise.

Same thing also applies to cars in general. Find yourself one of those government-subsidized housing developments most anywhere, and look at the cars the residents have. You'll see lots of late-model cars.

That's the reason a lot of folks like that are in those situations....priorities.

That's not all there is to it :) Some high end speakers don't sound good with low wattage running thru them, power hungry speakers need watts to alive. Case in point I had my Momo's hooked to a Panasonic HU, it has a 75x4 digital amp built in. But as with all HU's is pretty weak. My system sounded worse than the stock one, these were $400 speakers sounding shittier than my $40 factory ones. I bought a Memphis amp, which is a nice brand. It pushed 125x4, at low volumes the speakers would still hiss badly, which caused a lot of the detail of the music to be lost. I had somebody hook a meter up check it out, it wasn't until about 60 watts were flowing that they began to sound crisp and full. At that point they were semi loud, but not too bad. at about 80 watts they really started to sing. At the lowest level i could get clean sound out of them they sounded no better than my stock speakers. The stock system (A Mach) wasn't bad, but if I'm spending $3k on a setup I want it to sound, I dunno... better? lol.

And that is kind of the down side to high end car audio, you spend a lot and if you don't blast it you don't really get any benefit. I DON'T drive around hitting 140db, I'm not sure what my average volume was (before my system got stolen...) it was loud but I wasn't causing peoples windows next to me to rattle, I was much more mids+highs over bass.

At that point they were probably loud enough to annoy these affluent people who look down on others for anything they possibly can.

Walking down the street and I heard a Rolls Royce blast Bob Sinclair and the woman inside yelling "I love this song!"

I think it has to do with age more than affluence.

I honestly hate it when people blast their music in the car. Loud volume isn't bad, it's just when the truck is rattling, all windows are down, and the hoodlum has his hat tilted to the site. Loud trunk rattling music = WT

if your sound system sounds poor at regular listening levels then it was a waste of money. poor design, money in the toilet.
decent cars with decent sound systems sound good at any level. 3k for a pos is well..sad. as you admitted, at regular volumes it sounds worse then stock. you can buy the most expensive speakers in the world and it will sound like cr@p if you don't know what you are doing. if you don't take into account the acoustic properties of the interior, fix them and specifically compensate for them it will be for nothing. i think you are just rationalizing your tossing 3k into a 2000 taurus and basically getting bupkis for your effort.
could you even imagine a company selling a high end audio system in a luxury car and claiming that "it only sounds good loud"? its a stupid stupid excuse.

I understand your thought process, but you simply made poor equipment choices - provided you were looking for smooth frequency response at all power levels. ;)

Me, I like something that's warm and soothing to hear at low volumes, but can really inspire me at high volumes. I want to hear every instrument all the time. Okay, if it's whisper quiet that's not realistic, but as long as we're loud enough to sing-along to that's all I need :)

Ok, you're not understanding the point I was trying to make, if you have top end component speakers that need close to 100 watts because they suck up juice, they won't sound good at low volumes because they will be getting no juice to them. Feeding 25 watts to speakers that can handle 200 will result in poor sound there's no way around that, and by poor sound I mean very similar to a stock system.

The high end audio system in a luxury car is still far from a high end, typically they'll be a BOSE system, or something similar. what they consider "high end" wound be very mid level in my books, but I'm an idiot who killed a few batteries and blew an Alternator because of my system. I'm over the top with mine, but honestly the best luxury car system will sound like shit next to mine. I could have easily dropped $900 and had setup similar to what high end car companies push and got good sound at a low volume. But anyone with the same setup as me ain't getting good sound at low volumes period.

As I said a few times I was dumb and went with speakers that need more power than any typical setup, I could have put some Alpine R-Type Components in, but I went with Momo's and from my experience I don't care how you have it set up, they sound like utter shit until you get a ton of juice going to them. *shrug*

Um...I'd consider myself affluent...and I like to blast my music. I'm just considerate of others and do not blast it where others will hear or be offended by it.

Places I blast it:
1) In my own house where others can not hear it (not outside obviously)
2) In my car...no I do not pack my car full of subwoofers so that I bounce the cars next to me...if I'm driving around town...I put the windows up to listen to my music loudly
3) with my headphones on (although I don't need to turn it up that high with a nice set of in-ear headphones for more than enough "experience").

I only play muzak at moderate volume whilst driving but still considerately lower it when stopped in traffic with the windows open.

I am all too aware of mooncalves who fail to do likewise, and do not want to be (or seen to be) like them. Which begs the query, what do said mooncalves think of others of same ilk? Or does the figurative light bulb above their head simply remain dim as they are so deaf and/or self-centered that they fail to notice? Methinks not. Yet they cannot think the other inconsiderate for doing what they are which leaves the possibilities of improbably being in accord or, most likely, seeing it as a primitive challenge of some sort. Wot?

In summary: WTF are they thinking!? Exterminate all the brutes.

I can just see someone driving along with Maple Leaf Rag blaring out their windows.

The boompa-boompa guys you hear have the volume WAY higher than it needs to be for fidelity or power. Get in your car, crank up the tunes to a loud sing-along level, then get out and shut the door. You'd be surprised how little you can hear, especially the bass.

Edit: I should add that this is coming from someone who has spent years in front of rock bands powered by the biggest, baddest, and loudest amps money could buy.

It has nothing to do with an inferiority complex, would you say somebody who spends $20,000 on the audio portion of their home theater to have an inferiority complex? I'm not trying to impress anyone. If you look at most athletics & a lot of actors & musicans they have crazy car audio setups. Would you say somebody who drops $100k on a car stereo is cheap with no class? You sure like to generalize. You could call them stupid for spending that much but to flat out say nice stereo = classless fucker is pretty hilarious.

If loving loud music means I have a small penis, then I must. But that doesn't explain why I still like loud music even when I'm in the middle of nowhere with nobody around to hear it.

And you bring up "stupid rims" but if you buy any new car or truck it will come with these "stupid rims" Like it or not rims are a status symbol. And unless you're buying a Corolla chances are a new car will come with shiny rims. And nice cars will come with very powerful stereos, when did wanting nice shit become "you have t3h small penis LOLCOPTER!"

Nice viewpoint you have there.

When you want nice shit because you want people to pay attention to you and "respect" you, that's when it becomes "you have t3h small penis." And as I've pointed out, there is NO FUNCTION OTHER THAN ATTENTION for the systems and rims on which poor people waste what little money they have. You're proving my point by telling me I'm supposed to be impressed by these things! Poor people been pushed aside by society, and they're trying to jump up and down and yell "hey, look at me, I'm still powerful, right?"

The guy with the hat pulled over the tops of his ears, 26's on his 1992 Cutlass, and the pair of Kragen Autoparts 12's bumping in the back is definitely displaying some "status symbols," alright. Low-status symbols. And those sports and rap stars that suddenly get money and replace the Kragens with Alpines? There's a reason we have the term "new money," and it doesn't refer to the upper class. Read "The Great Gatsby" and get back to us, kid.

The truly classy have no need for status symbols. The mere fact that you'd argue in their favor tells us that you were raised in no more than a middle-class family. I'm middle class myself, but at least I don't aspire to look poor.

Then explain to me why expensive cars come with rims? I agree with you on the 92 Cutlass, but nice rims are found on any nice new car you buy. Because of these "ghetto people" who put rims on anything the trend was started. And now when Donald Trump buys a new Maybach it'll have rims in the same fashion.

And the guy who has donks on his Cutless put A LOT of money into the modifications, enough to where he probably could have bought a nice new car.

i play it pretty loud, but only with the windows up/on the highway. if my windows are down and i'm on city streets its not really audible more than a few feet from the car

also, speed sensitive volume control FTW
