Why is it that only less affluent people blast their music?

Every time I hear trunk rattling music, it seems that the driver is less affluent than most (judging by the car).

Every time I hear obnoxious loud music blarring out of a house in the middle of the day, the owners/renters seem to be less affluent judging by the shape/location of the property.

Anyone else notice this?

many assumptions going on ...

do you consider yourself "affluent"?

how does one become "affluent"?

I am not affluent. I don't blast my music. I may turn it up in the car with the window up, but there certainly aren't any 15 inch solos in the trunk

I didn't mean to attach any other meaning to less affluent. I meant it as poor.

I'd say it tends to be young people, actually. I go to school that costs $50,000 a year with more than half the people paying full price. Many of these kids would definitely be considered affluent (think children of politicians and fortune 500 execs). A lot of them blast music with blatant disregard to others as well.

All I've noticed is it is mainly younger people that do it, which is funny because you would think the oldies were the ones that need their music louder so they can actually hear it.

I was recently out on a tiny little lake near me. The entire lake is only 430 acres, and it's incredibly over-developed. There are a lot of lawyers & doctors who have made the lake a place to show off their wealth. I went there 2 nights ago to get some exercise kayaking. The largest boat on the lake could be heard anywhere on the entire lake because of its stereo blasting while they made their way from one side of the lake to the lakeside bar/grill on the other side. It was like "look at me! look at me! I've got a bigger boat than you! And... my boat has a radio in it!" I ran into one of my friends at the boat launch. He had been leaving the bar as that guy was pulling in; said the guy was a pompous ass.

To an extent, I agree with you, but there's also the conspicuous consumption assholes from the other end of the spectrum. Wild shot in the dark about cars with the vibrating bass: 70% less affluent whose stereos are worth more than the cars, and rent an apartment; 20% more affluent, showing off. 10% just plain ordinary assholes.

edit: that's not to say that the other 90% aren't also assholes who don't respect other people & their community.

Don't a lot of the hi-fi audio systems not really demonstrate their true quality until you turn the volume above a certain level? That might explain some of it.

Not remotely, in fact the opposite is frequently true in my experience. After all, richer people can afford better sound equipment. The loudest person I know (music wise) is my nephew, who is also among the richest people I know.

exceptions? I hear just as many people blasting metal in nice cars as I do people bumping rap in their 94 GEO's. Rap music is better suited at super high volumes, something about the bass vibrating your chest when you have it really loud that is liberating. I use to have quite the system in my car. And I would typically drive around with it loud enough to be hear pretty clearly a block away.

I'm pretty sure it had to do with me liking loud ass music more than anything about me being, or not being affluent.

and as Special K said, you need volume to bring out the true clarity of a higher end system. The levels I played mine at might have been overkill, but to hear the clarity of all the notes and feel the thump of the bass I had to crank it up. pushing 6.5" component speakers that can handle 250 watts requires a good deal of power to get decent sound. At low volumes my system sounded like weak sauce.

I can just see someone driving along with Maple Leaf Rag blaring out their windows.

For the OP - disrespect and a need to dick-waving through excessively loud music doesn't follow the bounds of wealth. I've seen cheap cars and expensive cars with insanely loud stereo systems. The funny ones are those that are so loud that there's also an overtone of the car's body buzzing. I always hope the damn things will spontaneously implode into a micro-singularity, but alas, it never happens.

Not true, I see a lot of people in my area that drive BMWs, Mercedes, and new cars that are pretty pricey. For some reason they all choose to crank up either really bass-heavy trance or mainstream rap :/

I'd like to know why mexicans are always blasting it too. Always out of their homes too! It's almost like they set the speakers on the window and turn it to 11! Not even going to get into their cars music being loud.

Obviously not all of them I just mean there seems to be a larger percentage per homes than most other communities. They seem like a very loud people in general. Lots of screaming kids too.

While generally true, when you can afford concert equipment in your house (like my nephew) it moves to a new level.

Mexican music has awesome bass, the louder the better. In my area we have quite a few Mexican dudes with older Chevy Trucks who basically tossed a couple regular home speaker Cabinets in their truck bed. The bass is pure bad ass in a lot of Mariachi music. At regular volume the tunes lose some of their impact.

WooT.

But I only have it loud enough to barely come through the windows. I never want to hear anyone else's music either so I keep it to myself.
