Why is it that English speakers no longer differentiate between What and Which??

I'm SURE many people don't realize that they're too different words. The grammar on ATOT is atrocious and in some cases it's just a slip up, but I think that in the majority of cases the writer simply knows no better. The more time I spend on anandtech the more I realize that my kids are not going to a public school in this country.

I think they do. Most people understand that what and which are two different words. They just don't know when to use each one. Also, using the correct word for the situation is part of grammar.

Edit: I'm sure some people don't understand that there are two different words, but those people are complete morons.

ATOT is hardly the place upon which you should be basing your assumptions about American grammar usage ;)

Do you really think grammar is much better among the general population?

Perhaps, but I tend to agree with you in general. Most Americans either suck at grammar, have never been taught grammar properly, or merely don't care.

However most people try harder when they're speaking in person than on an online message board

I hate to say it, but the internet has been the downfall of grammar.

Think about email. How often do you receive email that doesn't have a large amount of
grammatical errors. People don't use complete sentences, using capitals, or none, and
misspellings in general. While people may think this is ok, it just starts bad habits.
Forums are just as bad. It might start as laziness, but it has turned into something
much worse.

Which and what are just an example. Alot of people don't know the difference between you're and your.
Although, I seriously doubt that its just English speakers that do this.

i will note however, in my opinion, proper grammar when spoken is not NEARLY as important as it is when written.

sometimes on boards like this or when chatting i think we forget how important grammar is when trying to get a point accross.

improper use of grammar can completely change the meaning of what is written.

LOL i admit to doing this lately too. I recognize it as soon as i reread what i post, but i'm just too lazy to edit it. Can't really say why, i definitely know it hasn't always been like this for me. Maybe it's the BET and ebonics finally affecting me.

Certainly true. I was simply trying to make the point that grammar usage among people on AT is no worse than that of the general population.

ya, let's make it a race thing. :)

blame BET and Ebonics for ALL the grammar problems we have in the US today.

btw, i'm not one of those that believe in strict Kings English type grammar, i believe that languages should be flexible and adapt, it should be about common understanding, and maybe people who don't differentiate between what and which are correct, maybe it should be just one word.

I never blamed it on all grammar problems, just certain ones, like what and which. And twisting words like bad, sick, etc into meaning the opposite. It's just idiotic.
