Because the PS3 was looking to be EXTREMELY dominant in those early days.

And that just keeps slipping... And slipping.... And slipping some more.

I would never buy my child a PSP too delicate for children but I'll sure as heck buy them a DS virtually indestructable with good kiddy games.. that and the enormous old library of compatible games sells systems..

Me I prefer the movies.. music, pictures, the wireless internet and the more adult like games that the PSP offers.. even if none of them are spectacular either.. but id rather play burnout on the PSP over mariocart on the kiddy DS..

"Little kiddies" weren't responsible for the PS2's success; why aren't they buying PSPs in droves?

Funny you would mention "little kiddies" being responsible for those figures, when it's a well known fact that Nintendo attracted an older demographic with their DS (with games like Brain Age selling millions of copies).

Funny that at least here I only see children with it and in the game stores buying freaking pokemon crap and other crappy japanese kiddy games... every 30+ year old I know in IT has a PSP..
and if the PSP had the calibur of games that the PS2 had when it was in its heyday it would be outselling eveyrthing.. but the fact is the PSP games are crap and the only thign the PSP has going for it is its other features.

You should take a closer look at the DS game selection. Sure there are "kiddie" games, but none of mine would be called that and they're all great.
My current DS games:
Metroid prime, Mario Kart, New mario bros, mario64, Advance wars, meteos, brain age, mega man zx.

Waiting for Zelda and final fantasy. And there are quite a few more non kiddie games such as both Castlevanias and others.

I haven't seen any psp games that really interested me yet. The emulators might be fun though.

So what are your 30+ year old IT buddies doing with their PSPs? Probably playing NES and SNES games.

yup! and watching ripped movies and music =)

What a coincidence. I could do that on my DS Lite, too. I wouldn't even have to use one of Sony's proprietary memory sticks. That said, if I want to watch a movie on the go I use my laptop's 17" screen.

I just can't see why I would want to buy a $200+ PSP primarily for multimedia capabilities when I could have a cheapo portable DVD player with the same movie/music multimedia capability, a bigger screen, and longer battery life for less money.

Just curious, though... What DS games have you played? When I got my DS Lite for my birthday in June, I cherry picked a bunch of the top-rated games from gamerankings.com and I haven't found one that's disappointed me, yet.

So far I have:
-New Super Mario Bros.
-Mario Kart DS
-Advance Wars: Dual Strike
-Animal Crossing
-Nintendogs (admittedly cutesy, but I still have a blast with the competitions, very innovative)
-Big Brain Academy
-Brain Age (I usually manage to have my brain age test out at age 20... real age: 24.)

My fiance loves the last two Brain games I've mentioned. It's kick started her into liking games and now she's excited about the Wii, which makes it nice for me. Forgive my rambling, but I'm just interested in hearing legitimate reasons on why people DON'T like the DS when it's overcome initial market hesitation to become so widely accepted.

CK

You cant carry around a 17 inch monitor or a mobile DVD player as well as an MP3 player on the bus or to work every day..

why would you do all that when the PSP does it all in a pocketsized device?

I dont like ANY of the games you posted.. none even attract me..
I detest japanese style games... Final Fantasy is crap mario cart is not my cup of tea... prefer real cars (gran tourismo or PGR style) mario bros was fun when I was 15 not now at 35..
dont like any of the other games on your list... i also tried the sims when it was new on the DS as well as thier version of need for speed and metriod... did not like any of them..

I just dont like Nintendos or the Japanese style of games at all.. maybe this is why I tend to like the Xbox and 360 so much.. mostly american style of games..

I'm 33 and I love both of my DS lites. I have a whole bunch of co-workers in the same age bracket as myself and CVSiN. They bought PSP's and now hardly use them. Both my DS's are in daily use, with me and my GF playing games on WiFI, multiplayer between us or running Dr. Kawashimas Brain Training/Brain Age, etc. the New Super Mario Brothers is a great addition and a welcome return to the 2D platform Genre. Something that many gamers of my generation have missed since the advent of 3D consoles.

Anyhow, the Wii will be a great machine, despite the obvious detractors.

its not that i hate Nintendo.. or i wouldnt have bought thier last 3 systems..
I had a DS on launch day and i had a gamecube on launch day... and had a gameboy advance for the longest time.. but they all ended up sitting in my closet gathing dust.. as the games kept coming out had nothing to attract me..

Its not all about graphics. Sure looking great is a plus but a polished turd is still a turd. If the game play is decent, the controller is fun and well implimented, and the price is right not only for the console but games as well it will fly off the shelves. I will pick one up for its priced right for now compaired to the other 2 and will keep me and my family busy for years till the prices of the other 2 come down in price along with some of the thier games.

you know, it really boils down to your taste. and that's that.

however, i must say... the psp is no where near pocketable (nor is the ds lite). I don't honestly thing any decent gaming device ever will be. That is, unless you wear cargo pants and enjoy a weighted object smacking against your leg when you walk.

but go nintendo... competition is good.

That does make the most sense, but I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Obviously, my mistake.

Also, I carry and use my 17" laptop on the DC Metro 5 days a week... little did I know I was performing the IMPOSSIBLE! :p

Too many good games to play for it. The key franchises, mario, zelda and metroid, are lining up to be masterpieces. COD3 and Red Steel look like a cool new way to play fps games. Trauma center just plain looks fun. Wario ware, wii sports, and wii play all look to be a great time with people over.

I can't wait. On the other hand, the 360 has been out for a year, and I can't think of anything I REALLY want to play. And the ps3, well...who cares? Too expensive. It had better do my dishes and mow my lawn before I spend that kind of cash on a console.

I so want to like the 360 and the ps3. But it's going to take more than shinier graphics and blood/guts to make me really want to buy it. I'd pay $600 if I was to get a $600 experience out of it.

well what I was saying for me its not possible... not for everyone.. most of the time i end up having to stand on the bus as it is... so trying to hold a laptop to watch a movie is not possible unless youre lucky enough to get a seat... and even then the laproom on our commuter busses is pathetic..
much easier to have my PSP in my jacket pocket then trying to dig out a laptop to watch movies or other media.

and im not a troll as im not trying to convince anyone of my oppionion.. im just talking like anyone else here.. personally I'm a bit baffled why my game tastes are changing as i get older myself..
but the controller setup of the WII is still the major downpoint for me on this gen..

i'd be willing to give them a shot just for redsteel (even with no blood in a swordfight game :p ) if it has normal controls.

just becasue i have different tastes now doesnt mean im a basher or a troll..

like alot of people, the DS was what got me back into gaming with its awesome library of games, since the industry took a huge dive after the SNES. The Wii looks to bring it back on the console end.

Well, I have this theory that people who spend a great deal of time consuming a particular media go through stages of appreciation / criticism. It's very evident in movies and video games to me. I haven't fully fleshed out the details of the early interest, but needless to say in both cases you end up in cycles of addiction / interest.

Novice games often end up appreciating the same games as really hardened veterans. You seem to be at the stage where you can still appreciate slight variations on the same theme and style of game. A lot of people seem to never get beyond this stage, and boy do I wish I was still there. It's incredibly difficult for me to play any game more than 3 hours because I feel like it's the same game I've played 200 times before with different graphcis, sounds, and if I'm lucky, storyline.

Some of us have progressed to this next stage of addiction, where we have played so many games in so many variations that we get more mental stimulation from watching a cat walk around the apartment than from most games. This is the "roger ebert" stage, because that's where he seems/seemed to be at. A game might be interesting to us just for a particular facet of it. Like maybe a well done cut scene, or (in the example of company of heroes) being able to set unit facing in an RTS. But games are meant to be played for a while, and the appeal of the small variation fades after a short while. Ebert does this with some movies, where he likes one aspect of the film and if he were to answer honestly the question, "but how can you ignore all the other cliched crap?" he would respond, "I've seen so many movies that almost everything is cliched crap at this point, so I get excited by small things that make cliched crap stand out"

At this stage, a game that interests us for more than a week comes out once or twice a year, if we are lucky. Games that involve a different physical or mental technique are very interesting to us, because it feels like something totally different even if it's the same exact game with a new control scheme. Graphics and sound start to become less important. Being able to play with other people is often an important feature.

So I don't mind if mario tennis looks like moronic cartoons. Heck, I'd play a dora the explorer game if it were a unique gameplay experience. In fact, and this is a sad truth about video games these days, having watched dora the explorer, I'd say it's probably more mentally stimulating than almost every video game I've played this year.

You bought your DS on launch (Nov 04), had it for 6 months, but somehow managed to buy (not play the demo that came with it) Metroid (Mar 06) for it? Something doesn't add up here.

huh?

nice try at what?

are you saying that now demos are not a valid reprsentation of games?
if so i guess the entire premise is a waste of time and programmer resources..

if i dont like a demo im most likely not gonna like the full product so why on earth would I buy it?
that goes for ANY game..
