I have an auto and wouldn't have it any other way. I fail to see how people see it as fun to drive a car, its just a machine designed to take you from point A to point B. Its thats at those points that you really want, not the act of getting there.

To say nothing of trying to drive a stick in heavy traffic.

Re-read my post. Where does it say anything about drinking and driving?

I think your sarcasm detector is broken...

Yup, no excuse. Slipping the clutch because rush-hour traffic moves 2 mph slower than idle speed in 1st gear is fun and very beneficial to clutch life!

A modern automatic has no meaningful fuel economy difference, and is reliable for a couple hundred thousand miles. As far as expensive to fix, the clutch replacement on my 951 runs a trifle over $4,000 parts and labor. Replacing the entire transmission in my old Honda automatic when I was 18 was only $1,600, and that was using a completely rebuilt unit, not a junkyard salvage unit. The automatic in the Honda lasted 207,000 miles. The clutch in the 951 lasted 155,000 miles. Cost of automatic: $800/100,000 miles. Cost of manual: $2,600/100,000 miles. Rebuilding the synchros in a manual transmission typically runs about the same price as rebuilding an automatic.

As far as the boring part, I am not in the habit of racing on public streets. When I want to wring my car out, I take the 951 to the track. After you've gone 140-150 mph down the backstretch of a racetrack, even a manual transmission is rather boring when operated in a legal manner on the street. In street driving I would say that 90% of the time I'm completely ambivalent about automatic or manual, 8% of the time I prefer the automatic for traffic, and 2% of the time I prefer a manual. On balance, the automatic wins for my daily driver. I'll stick with a manual for my sportscars, but I don't want to commute every day in a sportscar. I've done that. It's just annoying to be crawling at 0-5 mph in a sportscar because it's always chaffing to know that the car wants to go faster.

My current daily driver is a manual
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Even after 50,000kms, I have yet to find a clutch/shifter combo that's as feather-weight and buttery-smooth in a comparable class of vehicle. :)

What's next? Going to tell us that you're buying a '96 Civic DX 4AT and throwing a park bench on the trunk? :p :D

Thanks for the apple to apple comparison.

Actually, Honda automatics are some of the most expensive automatics to rebuild.

In any case, as I said, the cost to re-build a manual and replace the synchros is generally about the same as the cost to rebuild an automatic. Even when comparing two similar cars.

I'll note also that you didn't offer any opposition to any of my other points.

It's not my car. I'm driving my dad's truck because my car won't pass inspection right now (needs a new hub, missing wheel stud), and now I just found out I have water in the oil, so at the very least I've got a blown head gasket. God, please don't let it be a cracked head :(

Bullcrap.

I mainly drive to work, and I far enjoy the act of driving there, then I do actually arriving and working. And in many other cases, I'm going somewhere I have to spend money, and I don't enjoy that near as much as I enjoy driving.

I'll concede your point that a stick is a pain in traffic, I couldn't own one if I lived in a big city.

Civic is too small for an all-around car. :p

I just got tired of having to say, "I'd love to drive the group to [insert destination here], but I have a Mustang and adults don't fit in the back." I also got tired of being raped on insurance for the Mustang and having every punk kid with a fart pipe wanting to race. At the end of the day, I just want to get home from work, not be harassed by childish teenagers wanting to show off. Believe it or not, but on the freeway the S70 pulls harder than the Mustang. Love turbos.

Besides, I'm one ECU re-flash away from the S70 T5 being within a few tenths of the Mustang and that's close enough for the street. ;)

I have an automatic right now but I am doing to buy a new car within (hopefully) a couple months and am leaning towards a manual cause they're pimp.

Who are you going to to get your ECU programmed? When I first got my S40 6 years ago there was a couple of sites online that were developing stuff for it, now they've moved onto the newer models and it would be great to find any other sites that might offer something for my car.

I'm certainly happy with my 740 Turbo Wagon :D
I think when I finally dump my Chrysler, I'm gonna go for a 2004+ V70R.

IPD seems to be well respected. Especially for their milder kits (I certainly don't intend to be going for huge numbers if I do a re-flash, so no upgraded turbos or anything). As always, the more power, the riskier it is. General consensus is that anything below 300 at the crank is essentially as safe as stock for the S70 with the Asin Warner 4-speed automatic.

Website for IPD is www.ipdusa.com

I'm not affiliated with them in any way.

Manual if you live in the country. Manual would suck big time in the city's stop and go traffic.

Granted, at >6'0" I wouldn't want to be squeezing into the back of my Civic myself, and it really isn't good for 3 across, but I've never had complaints about legroom or heads hitting the ceiling. You just need shorter friends. :p

As far as the punk kids, you just start laughing. :D
