god forbid i had to use a firearm to defend myself in public, i (currently) wouldn't want the responsibility of worrying about missing and hitting a bystander.

that being said, once i become comfortable enough? then i'll consider it more heavily.

I live in a nice neighborhood also, and I have a CHP (concealed handgun permit) and carry ever time it is legal, and while at home I have a handgun within reach all the time.

There have been 3 or 4 armed home invasions in nice (nearby) neighborhoods within a mile of my house this year, as recently as yesterday at 9 AM. Plus a mid-day break-in about 4 doors down late last year.

They were caught, and they weren't from the neighborhood, but from a sketchy area. I'm not worried about my neighbors, but those that target the better neighborhoods because they can score more stuff and $$$$.

Cops only draw chalk lines around bodies, I have every intention that if they do so in my house, it is the body of the pond scum that believed he had a right to my stuff.

Additionally the wife has her CHP and carries and when I'm not home has her handgun handy. My adult daughter also has her CHP

Most of us wear our seat-belt, yet have no plan to be in an accident. Most of us have smoke detectors and extinguishers to prevent being the victim in a fire. Our preparation also includes not being the victim and dying because some crack head needs more drugs. All are remote threats, yet can (and do) happen all the time.

It is stupid to carry a gun around with you, there is literally no reason why you should if you are a normal citizen(i.e. not in security, cops or someone after your life etc.).

A knife or no weapon is better than going around concealed hand gun for self preservation. A gun for your home and car where you might actually get into some situations where a gun would come in handy is understandable, but a concealed hand gun not so much.

The vast majority of situations outside of your home/car where you would need a weapon to defend yourself happen in close range and with proper training a knife is better than a gun because of the speed difference. Unless you point your gun at everyone who comes within 10 feet of you, you can draw and attack much faster with a knife. If you are too physically frail to use a knife properly, you should probably carry around no weapon because if a weapon gets taken away from you it will make the criminal more likely to rough you up/ kill you.

I own hand guns and rifles, but I've never had a desire to carry one around with me.

I sometimes carry a knife in my pocket, and there's a very short aluminum bat in my trunk, but I've never been in a situation where I've felt so threatened that I needed to go for any type of weapon.

I really don't care anymore and besides, the likelyhood of a situation where a gun would help my odds is pretty low. The odds that carrying would introduce extra hassle to my life is much higher. I like having the option though.

I live in an area where personal safety is not an issue. I can walk the streets at any hour covered in diamonds and cash and would not have to worry. These standoffish self entitled pricks around here are so damn unfriendly that they won't even stay on the same side of the street to rob you much say "good morning".
The few drug addicts around here are middle class high school kids with nicer cars and clothes than I have so they aren't hurting for cash enough to go out and rob people. They stick to burglary.
If I lived in other parts of the country I would carry.
Unfortunately, in some parts of the US you are responsible for your own protection and you have to be prepared. No police are around to protect you and the culture of criminal is to take whatever at all cost.

I work in a gun free zone. The only time I had a firearm in my car at work, I had to park in a separate parking lot. Yeah too much hassle.

Same for me. I occasionally still carry, but generally I'm working so much recently that I only leave my house for really short local errands aside from work so the benefit is outweighing the burden.

Are you assuming the cops will protect you?

Are you aware that the SCOTUS has ruled that cops do NOT have the duty to protect you, as have many lower courts?

Cops investigate the aftermath of a crime, take lots of pictures, maybe dust for finger prints, and solve very few cases, and if they do catch the bad guy, they are still on the streets for years before trial, and too often get a slap on the wrist if they ever do go to trial.

1. in my legal system it can't have bullets in it and other security stuff (basically you can only do transportation) so self-defense with a gun outside of your house is effectively banned.

2. if it was legal, it'd still not be necessary to carry it out of the house, mugging is rare and usually non violent, other violence is mostly targeted and not random (and I'm not a criminal so it's not my problem), except for random aggressions which happen without weapons and you can't see them coming though, and most of the time inside or after coming out of weapons-restricted areas (sports matches, mardi gras).

3. heavy, bulky, I wouldn't probably be able to use it fast enough, I don't even know how it's like to be mugged but I doubt they come towards you while displaying the mugger's warflag.

You need to be aware, and look for trouble before it starts. Looking like you know what's going on is a deterrent itself. Walk tall, and make yourself an unappealing target. Stay away from alleys so you can't be jumped by surprise, and keep your weapon in easy reach.

Why would I? They're expensive, they're a hassle, and in most situations, they aren't going to help me. If I'm walking down the streets of Philly and some crack addict puts a gun to my head and demands my wallet, what am I going to do? If I made a move to pull a gun, I'd be dead rather than robbed. Realistically, there'd just be one more stolen gun on the streets at that point, so I wouldn't really be helping anything.
