Why don't you carry a gun?

I see a few gun threads pop up from time to time.

As a Canadian, I don't have the right to carry a firearm guaranteed to me under our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but if I did, I probably wouldn't for a variety of reasons, and I think the primary reason would be that I don't have the training or the mental capacity* to decide when/where/why is the appropriate time to use it.

I'm really just curious as to why those who are guaranteed the right still don't possess or carry firearms?

*I'm not mentally challenged, nor have I been diagnosed with any type of phsychotic disorder. I just feel that, in a situation where using a firearm might be appropriate - whether for defense or offense - I might end up deciding too early or too late.

I feel like I would definitely know when it would be appropriate to use it. I have no interest in being some kind of hero but if I ended up in a situation where I was right next to some kind of armed robbery/stickup where I might be in danger, than yea it would be useful.

I can carry one nearly everywhere, and in every state. And I rarely do (maybe less than 3 times a year).

I live in a nice neighborhood, its a pain to carry, and my work doesn't allow it.

That being said, if I lived in a sketchy area, I would most definitely carry.

I got robbed at gunpoint last July in St. Paul, MN. I've always been pro-gun, but getting robbed makes you realize that no one is going to protect you. You need to protect yourself - the police will only show up after the fact.

I have no desire to carry a gun and I would rather spend my money on other things. I don't have a problem with people who do carry, it's just not something I'm particularly inclined to do.

Do you care to disclose where you were those three times a year when you were carrying one, and why?

Be as vague as you want, as I'm not trying to draw any conclusions from your response.

No real need. If I lived in, or visited more sketchy areas I'd consider carrying, but it isn't worth the hassle for my purposes. I'll take a fixed blade knife if I go somewhere unfamiliar. It's a bit of protection, and more generally useful.

Yea same thing happened to me. "When you need help in seconds the police are just minutes away!" is absolutely true.

IF you can't defend yourself you are at their mercy, if they happen to be the murdery type then you are SOL if you can't defend yourself. If you can defend yourself at least you have a fighting shot.

I spend most of my time at home (no need to carry) or at school (no ability to legally carry, although I still don't see the need there either). Once I move out of my mom's basement I'll probably buy myself a gun, though.

Yeah well I'd like to see your giant penis try to shoot a criminal

....oh wait :p

That could get sticky quickly.

Coincidentally, my friend's friend got robbed the same night. 6 dudes in ski masks kicked down his door and held him while they took all his stuff. That weekend was a perspective changer.

Fair enough.

Once you've purchased it, would you carry it with you? If it were a conceled weapon, would you take the required classes/training in order to carry it conceled?

If I had a snowball's chance in hell of obtaining a CCW I would probably get one. But I doubt I would carry at all times.

I work in a gun free zone. The only time I had a firearm in my car at work, I had to park in a separate parking lot. Yeah too much hassle.

I live in Connecticut. Not only is getting a carry permit a pain in the ass here, but even after getting one there are a ton of places that have No Firearms signs posted.

I've been around 52 years (almost 53), and I've lived in Michigan, New York, Indiana, Rhode Island, Maryland, California, New Hampshire, and the Virgin Islands. I've worked every kind of job you can think of, just about, from driving trucks to fishing boats. Not once in all that time have I ever felt like I needed a gun for protection. Don't guess that's likely to change.

I don't carry M-F due to work, I carry on the weekends though.

What's the difference?

I'm asking as non-condescending as I can. Is it simply because your employer does not allow you to?
