I don't think a very high IQ alone is enough to make a good president, especially as that would probably come with a lack of social skills. Certainly the President should be smarter than the average person, though.

I believe America's trademark independent streak coupled with a strong distrust of authority has morphed into a self-destructive hatred of all things intellectual. More and more Americans seem to want a president that is some normal joe they can have a beer with, someone that echews science, and eggheads of all disciplines. And quite frankly, it seems like Republicans and red-staters in general are the ones who really subscribe to this backwards "thought" process.

To me, this is the polar opposite of what we actually need as a country. We need a man of intelligence as President, not some dumbass yahoo who merely surrounds himself with men of intelligence.

Elitism is what it is... But when pointed at someone and labelling them is just an insult and a matter of opinion. I dont think he is an elitist at all. I would say MCCain and his "too many houses to keep track of" is more of an elitist (that of course is just my opinion).

Libs are spinning it? Anti Obama people are the ones posting nonsense that you shouldn't vote for Obama because he's elitist. There are plenty of reasons not to vote for Obama -- thinking he's elitist is a pretty stupid reason not to. Most of the time, from what I see, calling him elitist is just an excuse for other reasons for not supporting him -- ie. reasons that are superficial and/or not based on his policy/views.

Who's doing the spinning and who's doing the defending? The mere fact of calling him elitist and using that as a reason not to vote for him is "your" spin on things. The rest of the country (world) is sitting back thinking how dumb it is to vote against someone because he's smarter than you.

Of course it is. If you think you're better than everyone, but you're actually a drooling idiot, then you're not an "elitist". You're just stupid.

On the other hand, if you're both extremely intellectual gifted and highly successful, then you actually ARE better than probably 99% of the population. Hence you are elite. I fail to see how recognizing that fact is somehow a character flaw. It's the fake, folksy, home-spun, average-joe attitudes by millionaire ivy-league politicians that piss me off.

Of course, being snobby is another issue. That's when you don't show respect for other people, and I don't feel that good leaders would exhibit this trait.
