Why don't we want the President to be better than us?

Because I do. I want the president to have a brain the size of a soccer ball and an IQ so high they don't have a number for it yet. I want him to be better than me, my dumbass friends and you and your dumbass friends.

Since when did being "elite" become a bad thing?

I don't think a very high IQ alone is enough to make a good president, especially as that would probably come with a lack of social skills. Certainly the President should be smarter than the average person, though.

Elitism is an attitude. Elitism is NOT measured by wealth or IQ.

I believe America's trademark independent streak coupled with a strong distrust of authority has morphed into a self-destructive hatred of all things intellectual. More and more Americans seem to want a president that is some normal joe they can have a beer with, someone that echews science, and eggheads of all disciplines. And quite frankly, it seems like Republicans and red-staters in general are the ones who really subscribe to this backwards "thought" process.

To me, this is the polar opposite of what we actually need as a country. We need a man of intelligence as President, not some dumbass yahoo who merely surrounds himself with men of intelligence.

People have small egos and cannot stand them being reminded of their intellectual inferiority by somebody so much smarter than them in front of them all the time. Case in point: bush.

This new "elitism is an attitude not measured by wealth" nonsense you're using now because people want their president to be smart and not an average dip shit like republicans desire is a joke.

What's wrong with people in this country?

 Elitism is what it is. I didn't change it. It's just interesting to me how the libs are now trying to find a way to spin it so it isn't used as a negative trait anymore. Keep trying.... :p

There was a recent Ohio poll that found that 32% of people thought Palin was the candidate "most like them" followed by Obama, then McCain, then Biden.

First off, who wants a president "most like you"? I sure as hell don't. And I sure as hell don't want one who's "most like" 32% of Ohioans.

2 things...

1. See quote from George Carlin in my sig.

Elitism is what it is... But when pointed at someone and labelling them is just an insult and a matter of opinion. I dont think he is an elitist at all. I would say MCCain and his "too many houses to keep track of" is more of an elitist (that of course is just my opinion).

people want to know that the president understands the issues that are important to them and knows the cost of a gallon of milk, if not necessarily the cost of arugula at whole foods.

Libs are spinning it? Anti Obama people are the ones posting nonsense that you shouldn't vote for Obama because he's elitist. There are plenty of reasons not to vote for Obama -- thinking he's elitist is a pretty stupid reason not to. Most of the time, from what I see, calling him elitist is just an excuse for other reasons for not supporting him -- ie. reasons that are superficial and/or not based on his policy/views.

Who's doing the spinning and who's doing the defending? The mere fact of calling him elitist and using that as a reason not to vote for him is "your" spin on things. The rest of the country (world) is sitting back thinking how dumb it is to vote against someone because he's smarter than you.

Go ahead and pretend you're not spinning it though.

I'll take dictionary.com's definition over your opinion. ;)

Of course it is. If you think you're better than everyone, but you're actually a drooling idiot, then you're not an "elitist". You're just stupid.

On the other hand, if you're both extremely intellectual gifted and highly successful, then you actually ARE better than probably 99% of the population. Hence you are elite. I fail to see how recognizing that fact is somehow a character flaw. It's the fake, folksy, home-spun, average-joe attitudes by millionaire ivy-league politicians that piss me off.

Of course, being snobby is another issue. That's when you don't show respect for other people, and I don't feel that good leaders would exhibit this trait.

fixed bolding.

being rich doesn't make you an elitist. perceiving yourself as intrinsically better than everyone else because you think you're richer, smarter, etc, makes you an elitist.

I'm sure there's some elitist out there who thinks he's the bee's knees because he's living in a double-wide and none of his trailer park neighbors are.

You're looking for someone who is better than you are... and you're looking at *politicians*? Politicians are about as low as you can get.

History fail? Just about every single president has been a dipshit. Not going to change any time soon.

It's entirely possible to be part of the Elite while not being an elitist.

Take GW for example, he's definently not part of ANY elite but he's definently an elitist, take someone like Wesley Clark, he's definently elite but not an elitist.

Being elite has to do with competence, elitism has to do with arrogance.

So you WANT a president like you? Someone who works a boring 9 to 5 job, gets home from work, eats a Hungry Man dinner, rubs one out to internet porn, goes to sleep in a puddle of his own scrum, wakes up and does it all over again?

It must be nice to have such low expectations, huh?

Trolling AND personal insults? I've been banned for a lot less.

Weren't you the one who wrote "Barack HUSSEIN Obama" in some thread about Muslims.

I think they should ban you for general stupidity.

Your IQ is not going anywhere as you're growing up, that much is clear to every one of us thinking human beings.

It has been a long-known political fact that constituents and voters want someone they can identify with. The fact that you indicate poor habits of some individuals makes no difference.
