Why don't they sale the very small and economical cars that they sell in Europe here in the US? Gas Price related. . .

Two reasons I can think of.
1. America has a lot of open high speed highways. Most of the smaller cars are meant for mostly city and suburban driving and dont take well to open road.
2. Safety concerns, with a large number of people driving tucks and SUVs a car that small in an accident will end up like an aluminum can under your foot.

Americans don't want small cars. Period. Look at how big the Honda Civic, Accord, Toyota Corolla, Camry, Nissan Maxima have gotten.

Why can't I?

Let's see.. Scion, Aveo, Civic, Neon, Huyndai, Kia. These are the exact same cars people drive in Europe.

i agree,

im pretty sure they they have the tech to make a car that gets 50 MPG, and have it NOt be a Geo Metro,

they dont because the market isnt here for it, however its gonna be a kick in teh face when they all realize that they should have done it

Those look nice but are still too expensive!

Would you rather pay $10-14k and get a good small car that will last for years (most likely) or spend half that at end up with a POS that gets good gas mileage, when it's not in for repairs? I'll be curious to see the resale on these, then getting on that's a year or two old may be a good option.
I'm anxious to get behind the wheel of one of the Roadsters to see if I could fit.

Buy a Chevy AVEO

Dealer has 10 listed in the Friday Newspaper, Hatch or Sedan for $6,995

People don't like small cars becasue of all the Truck and SUV's on the raod. A lifted Excursion on 35" tires would decimate a Aveo at 15mph!

you could by a fairly new "old" beetle in mexico, not sure about what it would take to import it into the states though. they might not even allow it. those things run forever, and are easy as hell to work on.

You would have to do so much work on it to get it across the border it wouldnt be worth the money.
If you wanted an "old" beetle it would be cheaper to find a used american model that wouldnt be subject to such a harsh inspection

You could easily bring it in but will find it next to impossible in getting it legally registered for the road. All sorts of crash tests need to be done, certainly not something an average joe can do on their own.

Sadly, Smart's already on life support before it ever hit the ground stateside :(

However, if this we to be made available in the US and at a reasonable price, I'd grab one, dump my current beater in the gutter, and supercharge my current weekend car. How awesome of a two-car garage would that be? :D

Everything in the UK is more expensive. Based on the markup to other roadsters (Elise and S2000), I've interpolated that the Smart Roadster would sell for around $18k in the light trim.

Besides, you could have a neat, zippy little car and piss on hybrid-driving hippies as you get 45 city/66 highway

If you got hit in one of those little toys they sell in europe by the one of SUVs and big trucks here, you're going to be in for a world of hurt.

Are they kidding? Now I'm not talking about making a bmw mini that costs 20k - I'm talking about a cheap no frills car brand new for about 5k - and not a YUGO either - something easily servicable from common parts, and just runs.

No electric stuff, no computer, even a carberator is fine, just a basic standard shift, you crank the windows yourself, 2 door, 2 seat, 70 mph is the top speed car.

Aggressively market it to lower income persons and teenagers, young adults - etc.

It would sell.

Why buy a new crappy car for $5k when you can buy a used decent car for the same?
