Why does Nvidia's $100 GPU always compete with AMD's $60 GPU?

HD4770 - 9600GT - HD4670
HD5770 - GT 250/440/550 - HD5670
HD7770 - GT 550/640 - HD7750

Why cant Nvidia provide a card as good as AMD at $100?

7770vs550

1) firstly 7770 is about ~25% faster than a 550.
2) cheapest 7770 is around 110$ , cheapest 550 is around 110$ (newegg)

so its not 60$ vs 100$, their very simularly priced.

***640 (cheapest also around 100$)

550 is around 150% of a 640 performance.
7770 is around 184% of a 640 performance.

Thread title should be why is Nvidia's 640 such bad value :p
Or Why would anyone with 100$ buy anything but a 7770.

and newegg search.

I guess it gets very boring around here between launches if this is what we get.

Its because people will pay more for Nvidia just like people pay more for Levis. Nvidia is the best, even if their card is slower, get it?

No, it's the difference between buying Beats by Dre and getting something with a similar sound signature for less.

Ah, so I should buy those shiny batteries that cost twice as much but deliver about the same mA hours because they have a bunny mascot. I mean deliver cleaner, crisper power.

nVidia definitely has better brand recognition. Some people just don't know that there is a viable alternative.

Personally I would never pay more for an nVidia card...I have had roughly equal experiences with either vendor.

Right now however, bitcoin mining will keep me firmly in ATI's camp.

Overall after everything is weighed up NVidia's brand is better in the market. They thus get to charge a premium for their product based on prior results. Looking at any one particular market position at a moment in time and doesn't necessarily reflect that longer term picture. Most buyers especially in the $100 market aren't as knowledgeable about which card is the fastest at that moment at their price point. Even that measure is pretty variable depending on the games you choose.

For years I have been buying AMD cards because they had better price/performance, now I am on NVidia after having a raft of issues and put simply NVidia's drivers are much better. I think honestly 680 v 7970 its worth the premium, especially for SLI v xfire users. Down at the mainstream end of the market I have no idea who beats who, but I bet the problems with power saving impact AMD's low end cards as much if not more than their high end.

The 7750 and 7770 are pretty power miserly overall for the performance delivered. In fact the numbers on the 7750 and 7770 versus the GT 640 are quite a reversal from the top end 7970 versus 680, in terms of power for performance. Can't even cut GT 640 slack on DDR3 since the price savings compared to GDDR5 doesn't seem to materialize (unless Nvidia is going to MSRP the GDDR5 version at ~$130-140).

It's the people buying in at the low end who you would think should be even more concerned about getting value for dollar. Speaks to the power of marketing and PR.

I've owned both manufacturers' cards and I have to say the drivers are hit or miss for both of them. I had more graphical quirks if I stay cutting edge with AMD drivers but more power+clock, fan and desktop issues with Nvidia staying on latest releases.

Yeah Nvidia drivers are more or less better IMO. AMD is OK but as soon as you get into dual display, crossfire, etc fancy stuff Nvidia just seems to have their bases covered a bit better.

One word -DRIVERS- Especially with muti-screen gaming. Nvidia automatically switches from desktop to surround. AMD cards you have to mess with profile presets, which work great 80 percent of the time, but that 20% pisses me off beyond belief when the driver quits working and I have to restart my computer.

Nvidia also has more brand recognition.

Why can I get a pair of Lee's at wal-mart for $10 but they want $100+ at a designer store?

Silly thread with bunch of mindless comments ($100 card for multi-screen gaming?) on a baseless factual premise. (Which $100 NV card is worth getting? Pray tell please)

This is what happens when a mod makes a misjudgment and let a silly thread go along. Just on the first page of this forum there are several of these already and there is no doubt more will pop up, providing all kinds of fanboys and trolls opportunities they cannot pass up.

Dude...stop telling people this.

Next thing you know, AMD will start charging $150 for the 7770. Come on.

It's like paying more for a DVD writer over a CD writer. You pay more for a gaming card like NVIDIA and less for a budget card like AMD.
