Die size is an obvious factor, especially at that price range

Over the last few generations AMD has been able to do more with less die size. We'll see if that changes though with the GDDR5 equipped GK107.

Because Nvidia pays more to have Nvidia logo's at the beginning of video games.

Nvidia doesn't have a decent bang/buck lowend card for a while. We'll have to wait for the 640/650. The 7770 is hard to judge, it performs better in newer dx11 games.

As I asked in the other thread, why do people have to troll and post worthless sh!t threads like this and the other one?

Except the GTX 480 @ $210 beats everything at that price range.

Depends what your budget is, the 77xx offer exceptional value from AMD. I'll pay a premium for nvidia drivers, especially for SLi.

I agree, A gtx 480 @ sub $200 is a steal.

You can get one of these for 209$ on newegg:
R7850%20Twin%20Frozen.jpg

It matches the 480 in performance, and uses 1/3rd the power of a 480 does.
Chances are good its less noisy too, and it comes with newer tech/features than the 480 does.

That makes a 480 @ 210$ not look that attrative.
Its placed there because if it wasnt, people probably wouldnt buy it.

From what I have seen, questionable price differences don't seem to last long. If a card is notably overpriced relative to the competition's cards of similar performance, it usually comes down in price pretty quickly.

Bwhahahahaha.

from anandtech's review about whats new in the 7xxx series (probably alot of other small things I just missed):

Directx11.1 (instead of just 11) (windows 8)
-Target Independent Rasterization
-formalization of Stereo 3D support into the D3D API
-some new buffer commands

WDDM 1.2 + DXGI 1.2

- Partially Resident Textures:

"The concept behind PRT/Megatexture is that rather than being treated as singular entities, due to their size textures should be broken down into smaller tiles, and then the tiles can be used as necessary. If a complete texture isn’t needed, then rather than loading the entire texture only the relevant tiles can be loaded while the irrelevant tiles can be skipped or loaded at a low quality. Ultimately this technology is designed to improve texture streaming by streaming tiles instead of whole textures, reducing the amount of unnecessary texture data that is streamed."

-Eyefinity Technology 2.0
-Discrete Digital Multi-Point Audio (DDMA)
-Video Codec Engine (VCE) (kinda like Intel's Quick Sync, but able to put out much higher quality)
-Steady Video 2.0
-ZeroCore Power (insane low idle mode power usage compaired to other cards)
-Improved image quality with Anisotropic Filtering.

card:
PCI express 3.0
DP 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a (/w Fast HDMI technology) (support for 4K x 2K displays, ect)

"As next-generation TVs add support for 1080P frame packed S3D at 120fps (60Hz/eye)
Southern Islands products will be the first AMD products able to drive them over HDMI through the use of Fast HDMI."

I feel confident some of these things wont be found on a 480.
On the other hand, on a 7850, you wont find physX or Cuda.

On the short term, most of these things probably dont matter that much...
but if you plan on keeping the card a year or two, they probably will.

I think a bigger question is "why does the $100 price point suck so much?"

OP is calling the HD7770 a $100 dollar card but every vendor sells them for significantly more than that unless its a hot deal. Instead it is the HD7750 at that price point.

A $100 card is almost never twice as fast as the $50-60 dollar cards, but the $150 dollar cards are three times as fast (or better) than the $50-60 dollar cards. No one provides a great deal of value at the $100 price point.

I think part of it is that the $100 point is where you see many older cards getting in the mix. I recently needed a $100 video card and I bought a GTX 460, which provides more power than the 7750 (and better drivers which is why I really didn't buy the 7750).

Or your 7970 since it would burn the egg :(

(btw the egg never got cooked)

I wouldn't really call those things listed features, but I guess that's just me.

Are you actually implying that 7970's run really hot to the touch like a 480?

You are about to lose any credibility that you may have had.

You'd be nuts to take a 480 over a 7850, seriously nuts. 480 was okay back in 2010 when it was the fastest card around, excusing it for being a small furnace that sounds like a jet engine, but now it's a turd compared to everything on the market. I've owned both and the 7850 is just as fast and faster at times and dead silent. I have the Twin Frozr 7850 linked earlier.

Heck, I sold a 570 I got back from RMAing a 480 and used the money to buy the 7850

7850 is the only decent mid-range option out there. The 580ti448 is okay, 7850 is still better though. Quieter, only costs about $200, overclocks like stink and performs as well as last gens top end single GPU.
