Why does $80k/yr seem MUCH more than $60k/yr

because the extra $20K covers extra stuff, not essentials, if your essentials, like housing/food are covered by the 60K, then the extra $20K is extra, so it seems like a LOT

i got a big raise a few months ago and the extra money is extremely nice, we are no longer living paycheck->paycheck, our budget finally works

A family of four could live well on $60k/yr where I'm from, and one parent may not even have to work, depending on their spending habits. Rural south for the win.

Because in some cities, $60 will hardly buy you food and a decent apartment, but $80k is enough to live pretty nice almost anywhere?

uh...did you ever go to math classes? Even with $1,500 for apartment, $2,000 would remain, after taxes being deducted. $2,000 on food???

With $60K single person should live more than decent in most cities.

In my state, decent 1-2bdrm apartment would be in range $600-$700...

you don't live in a big city. $600 might get you a box on the street in manhatten.

You don't have to live in Manhattan, even if you work there. Ever heard of suburbs?

Wow. $700 doesn't even get me a 1BR. It doesn't even get me 1 BR when sharing. I pay freaking $705 for 1 bedroom out of 2 in an aging apartment.

Maybe you live at some cheap@$$ place because $700 apartments are unheard of here.

Good luck finding a decent 1 bedroom apartment in NYC suburbs under $1k/mo.

Also, I also have to go out 2-3 nights a week, eat out with friends, go clubbing, shop for clothes, pay utilities, car insurance, etc.

$60K in NYC is nothing.

Commuting to/from New York is NOT fun. The areas right outside Manhattan are just about as expensive as Manhattan, and outside that are areas that you really don't want to live, and past that is where I live, an 80 minute commute from work. Doesn't leave you a lot of free time when you leave the house at 6 and don't get home 'til 8, and you only worked an 11 hour day.

My mortgage alone is $4200 and I live in a "suburb" of NY.

I'd like to see a decent $600/month apartment in Central NJ where I don't need to quadruple lock the front door for fear of being slaughtered in my sleep.

You want to live there, your choice. There are alternatives in other states. Nobody forces you to pay 50K a yr for mortgage - it is your choice.

Stop trolling.

Life is not just work for some of us. We like to eat out with friends, go clubbing, have friends come over for parties,, maybe go for a hike every now and then.

Just because you are happy living in your town of Buckfvck, IA doesn't mean we would be too.

AND, you are the one that claimed $60K would be plenty to live comfortably in NYC. Not us. So stop changing the subject and try to make a logical argument.

A) you work where you have a job
B) not everyone wants to relocate to a different area - maybe they have family and friends there?
C) you are the one that made the initial claim, people are just disputing that - NYC obviously tops them all, but I live in Philly which is far from the most expensive city in the world, and you are LUCKY to get a studio in a sh!tty area for $600. I pay $1510 for a 3 bedroom, and I have a GREAT deal.
D) I've looked in suburbs too - $600 doesn't get you a nice 1-2bdr ANYWHERE unless you're talking a shack in the middle of nowhere. its just not feasable, are you 13?

now, don't get me wrong, I agree that you can live decently for $60k in most places, but not all, and it depends on your definition of "decently". I'm just graduating college so I'm used to just scraping by, so anything is "decent" to me.

I did not claim $600 for decent apartment everywhere. Read post again what is says. I simply stated what is price here where I am - and barely any 1bdrm apts. are over $600. City has population of 500K.

EDIT. And avgerage salary in USA was $37K few yrs ago.
