Everyone here knows that the salary earned necessary to proclaim baller status is $60K.

Because in some cities, $60 will hardly buy you food and a decent apartment, but $80k is enough to live pretty nice almost anywhere?

coca cola? 80K? what?

Well... this one time my stepmom, who for reasons unknown is incredibly frugal despite it being financially unnecessary, bought 324 2L bottles of caffeine free diet coke because they were .10 off per bottle one day. She bought enough to fill the trunk and back seats; unloaded them at home, returned to the store, bought the rest, then demanded the manager offer a rain check for the next shipment of bottles so she could buy even more.

Otherwise I have no effin idea what this thread is about.

sweet! Here's more...

1) I brought my mom's (not stepmoms) car over to wash one morning; my stepmom demanded that we make my mom pay the .12 or whatever $$ worth of water was used in the washing process.

2) My dad opened a can of tuna, found it rotten, and threw it out. Stepmom dug it out of the trash, baggied it up, tried to save it for later, and threw a fit when my dad told her it was poisonous and that the $0.49 the can cost was not a big deal.

3) She sneaks dirty dishes into the "clean" dishes in the dishwasher in an effort to run the dishwasher less.

I suppose it would be because the difference of $20k can be purely spent on luxury items and is not necessary to cover living expenses.

Yep thats way. Once you're able to afford a standard lifestyle without worry, the rest of the money can be used purely on entertainment (or investment).

If you make your way and live with x amount of money for enough years, the habits are ingrained. It is simply difficult to do otherwise.
When you get 1.2x, the other .whatever is excess plain and simple.
I got in the habit of buying used cars and running them for bazillions of miles, and I'll be damned if I can justify or feel good about buying a totally new one for myself. I had no problem with the new car for my wife, but for me, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

uh...did you ever go to math classes? Even with $1,500 for apartment, $2,000 would remain, after taxes being deducted. $2,000 on food???

With $60K single person should live more than decent in most cities.

In my state, decent 1-2bdrm apartment would be in range $600-$700...

you don't live in a big city. $600 might get you a box on the street in manhatten.

Thats disgusting and pointless, what is she trying to fool herself?

Agreed, $600 is absolutely nothing, he also didn't consider bills...

Does that mean I'm going to lose my "Baller" status if I retire and my income goes down to 40K?

lets see, for that 2K remainder:
car insurance, health insurance, car payment/repair/savings, retirement, general savings (you dont want to rent forever, right?), investments, retirment, grocery store food, dining out, going to bars, technology toys, clothing, toiletries, dating, entertainment, gasoline

$600 gets a box on a street if your within 150 miles of NYC. 60k is tight for where I live (brick, nj), our bills are paid fine but without some well off family members giving us some extra dough each year we wouldnt be able to do much.

One issue is that many families have both the husband and wife work now, so one husband with a decent job making 70k a year cant keep up with 2 people even if they are only making 45k. The cost of living seems to be gradually leaning toward both members working, so if your wife doesnt work you better have a good job.

If that post is sexist then just change around wife and husband in your mind, I'm not catering to 3% of families where its the other way around.

It isn't really a big difference.

Have to consider taxes and the tax bracket that you'll get moved into.

You don't have to live in Manhattan, even if you work there. Ever heard of suburbs?

I'm guessing the suburbs are also quite expensive to live in, but I'm pretty sure he meant actual big cities when he said "some cities"

boo/10. And though I know it's a (really, really bad) parody, I'll answer seriously: bell curve.
