I'd like to see a decent $600/month apartment in Central NJ where I don't need to quadruple lock the front door for fear of being slaughtered in my sleep.
You want to live there, your choice. There are alternatives in other states. Nobody forces you to pay 50K a yr for mortgage - it is your choice.
A) you work where you have a job
B) not everyone wants to relocate to a different area - maybe they have family and friends there?
C) you are the one that made the initial claim, people are just disputing that - NYC obviously tops them all, but I live in Philly which is far from the most expensive city in the world, and you are LUCKY to get a studio in a sh!tty area for $600. I pay $1510 for a 3 bedroom, and I have a GREAT deal.
D) I've looked in suburbs too - $600 doesn't get you a nice 1-2bdr ANYWHERE unless you're talking a shack in the middle of nowhere. its just not feasable, are you 13?
now, don't get me wrong, I agree that you can live decently for $60k in most places, but not all, and it depends on your definition of "decently". I'm just graduating college so I'm used to just scraping by, so anything is "decent" to me.
