Right now, there's reallyonly two peices of software keeping me using windows. Photoshop, and Internet Explorer. I'm seriously considering buying a mac to get away from all the MS corporate BS that's been coming up lately, and converting the windows machine 100% to linux.

Why do you use windows?

Because I've been using it for about 10 years now.

I haven't seen any corporate BS from MS...

...at least none that has affected the way I use my computer any.

I just switched back to the mac. OS 10.2 is just brilliant, and the included software (i.e. iTunes) runs circles around MM Jukebox or Winamp.

Anyway, they are super-expensive, but I have a friend that works at Apple, so I got 25% off of a brand new Powerbook G4 :) It's beautiful, and I couldn't be happier.

And you're kidding about using a windows box for Photoshop, right? And for browsers, the Chimera project's Mozilla client is MEGA fast and was written in Cocoa, so it's also really stable. No reason to even use IE at all, though of course it comes with MacOS....

1. i didn't have to do jack to get dual monitors to work (why i don't use linux)
2. i didn't have to do jack to get the cd burner to work (ditto)
3. it was free
4. it is stable
5. it runs fast
6. i don't have to worry about software not running
7. ms has done a good job on integrating their products... i like being able to use money 2002 and sync with msn money, and log into everything with my ms passport.
8. i can tinker, add, remove, whatever the hardware (in reference to apple).

in short, i have virtually no reason not to use windows.

because I'm not quite a linux guru yet and the compatibility layers aren't completely working yet

I'm working on learning, though.. and once I do, buy buy Winblows and product verification, anti-piracy checks up the wazoo, and other bullsheit

Too much funky hardware (dual monitors, USB CD-R, one fixed-fequency monitor, one multisync, good X10 software is hard to find for Win32, let alone linux, TV card) and I like to play games.
I could probably get most of my funky hardware to work but I have better things to do.
I like Windows, too *GASP*

I like OS X but I haven't the hardware to run it on. If there was an x86 port of it, I'd probably put it on at least one of my boxes. I can't justify buying Mac hardware when I built 2x1000MHz PIII for $225 which is plenty powerful for my purposes.

so you are a scared FUD spreading turncoat? :D

Actually, there are few issues w/ windows I really don't care for.
1) The almost weekly security patches.
2) the "access denied" message when trying to terminate a runaway process.
3) The lack of the unix-type command line I've grown fond of.
4) Product Activation

I'm not saying it's a horrible OS, and it definitely has a LOT of good points, but it's not my favorite OS, and I think I'd be happier with something else, and there's only one other platform that runs photoshop.

1) Linux has as more patches its just you dont here about them, no one cares when linux has a buffer overflow cause non of the h4x0rs give a $hit. i work in network security and is ee vulnerablity reports every day in all OSs if you think Linux is secure your deluded.

2) If you have the right privilages you wont get access denied, thats what security is for

3) there is a command line and many tools, WSH for scripting you can basically do anything you want from a command line just cause its not the same syntax is a silly reason to complain

4) Don't steal, it wont be a problem.

I wasn't comparin it to linux, and I know no OS is perfect, but windows is like a bright red target for hackers with new vulnerabilities found practiaclly every day.

That's not true, it does it even for the Administrator. If I wasn't an admin I'd understand it.

I didn't say the windows command line was bad, I said I liked the unix one.

As far as I know, microsoft still requires paying customers to use product activation, and didn't include that feature only in the warez version. Anyway, I do own a legal copy of Windows 2000, would you like me to post pictures of the box and CD?

Maybe you didn't hear me, but I wasn't saying "I hte windows, it's apiece of crap". I was saying, "these are some of the reasons I prefer other OS'es". If you like the windows command line, that's great, I prefer a unix command line.
