Dont get me started. I delayed my 2000 pro install for 5 minutes typing:

D:/I386/winnt32.exe/checkupgradeonly
D:/I386/winnt32.exe\ checkupgradeonly
D:\I386\winnt32.exe\ checkupgradeonly

Or something. I dont know. I felt like kicking the man who invented a forward slash and a back slash in the head when I was done. Theres probably reasoning behind it that I havent learned yet.

Oh, and as for windows....for the most part, its compatible, its the most stable OS i've used, and it works. It does everything I could possibly ask.

It works.

There's more software for it, more games. All my software is for Windows. :\

Windows is easy to use.. Other OS's are probably easy to use once you get used to them, but I don't feel like learning another OS.

Try going to a lan party with OSX/Linux.. You'd get no action. :p

Windows??

yes. any other questions?

Windows 2000 is WAY faster than Red Had 7.3 on the exact same machine - 1.33 Athlon, 512MB DDR, Epox 8KHA+, WD120JB, GF3. Opening a web browser should not take 3-5 seconds on this machine. In Linux, (both KDE and Gnome), this happens with all of the included web browsers, and even opera is slow. In Win2k I can open IE and have a fresh (uncached) Yahoo page up in less than a second. Opening a web browser is not difficult, unless software is way unoptomized. (And it isn't just my computer, I have tried others at school, same story).

Dont use RH 7.3: wont use RH 7.3 if what you say is indeed true.

Still thinking how could a Windows OS be "free"...

Why do you use windows?

What are the other options?

ms gives away a ton of software.... i got 3 copies of xp pro and 2 copies of visual studio .net for free. most of the giveaways are to developers and students.

Because some college students get it as a free promo handout at some event or a CDR for $5, and that's free enough for them. Of course, the drug dealer's first hit of crack is free as well, but you don't see anyone bragging about that.

Even the CDR for $5 is often highly subsidized by the university selling out and signing an expensive, exclusive site license with MS. Since their unit growth has pretty much stalled, MS has had to resort to jacking up per license fees (mainly for corporations).

So in other words, the final reason a lot of peeps use Windows is they enjoy bending over and taking it from the man. It's funny that with WXP Home, consumers finally have a stable Windows PC OS, and the loyal users laud it as if it's been around for years (no, W2K does not count as a consumer OS).

Yep. I have Windows XP on the same machine I tried to run Mandrake 8.0 on and it is a lot faster. It is very stable even my Windows 98 is stable. I won't comment about the free part.

free is free. nobody brags about the crack because they charge you for crap later on. i don't forsee having to pay for anything in the near future, and if i do have to, i have people that can get it at the ms store for me (or even costco :p).

we don't have those cds at my school (at least not that i'm aware of). nope, instead we have a microsoft student users group, which is basically a bunch of students who promote ms on campus in return for free stuff. some kids actually do work, and they get a lot more free stuff (read: x-boxes, pocketpcs), but people like me can do absolutely nothing and still get free pizza, shirts, books, software, etc.

lets see, i can

a.) pay much more money to get a machine that might be as fast as my current one,
b.) get a free os, but not be able to use some of my hardware
or
c.) get a free os, and be able to do everything i want

which do i choose?

I use Win2K for the fact that there's a couple of games I like to play, and because most filesharing apps tend to be developed for Windows. Yes, they're also developed for Linux, but they're somewhat clumsier.

I will not buy any version of Windows that forces me to use Product Activation. I prefer not to be treated like a criminal until proven otherwise (whether I am or not). I also upgrade and move PCs around from time to time, so I'd have to reactivate, and that would be a pain in the ass.

Ameesh, can you do anything about the fact that windowsupdate.microsoft.com forces you to reboot every single time you apply a critical update? To me, that is the single most annoying thing about the damn OS..

If DRM/Palladium "trusted computing" ever gets shoved down our throats, I will permanently switch to Linux.

Games, mostly.

I have really no reason to change... nothing in any other alternative OS draws my attention enough to switch even if I wasn't a gamer.

I use Windows because I help support an NT based network and also because I'm an avid gamer. However, for most other things, I use FreeBSD.
