Troll he may be but I also don't get the hero worship soldiers get. I cringe when I hear people say "thank you for serving our country" like going to Iraq and shooting at Arabs is really protecting us from anything. It's not like some disorganised mob of Iraqi's is going to storm into America with their one rusty boat.

I can only think it's a hold over from the WW2 era where these guys really did fight for freedom.

We should be thanking school teachers and nurses.

Exactly ! I feel our invasions also may help stir up more hate for our country abroad (in the Mideast and many other areas).
AFA police the Rodney king incident, Oscar Grant, etc are the EXCEPTION not the rule. I totally respect "peace" officers who help keep me safe in my middle class neighborhood.

I agree, we should be thanking them for sleeping with our kids.

Lookit pal, we shoot them over there so that we don't have to shoot them over here. But just in case, we have the FBI and DHS to shoot them over here. 😀

Yea dude, because clearly I was talking about everyone applying to the military being immediately qualified for highly technical / experienced positions

Everyone knows the military has no regular grunts, mechanics, etc. Only people that operate nuclear subs, perform complex programming, and fight like Bruce Lee.

A DoD study in 2006 found that 75% of American youths age 17-24 were not qualified to serve because they were too obese, too uneducated, too dumb or suffered from some sort of medical problem.

There's a 95% chance that you can't do what an 11B\0311 (who you affectionately call grunts) does.

Can you walk 25 miles through the mountains and rivers of Afghanistan over the course of several days after having been inserted via helicopter? Keep in mind you're carrying about 120lbs of gear (ruck sack, weapon, body armor,) you're likely to get in at least 3 firefights during the 4 day movement back, you'll sleep less than 4 hours a night on the ground and you'll be eating whatever you carried in with you.

There's more to being a soldier than technical skills (though to deny the skills of an experienced infantryman would be foolish,) there's discipline and mental toughness that the vast majority of people simply do not possess.

Cops, I could almost agree. Almost. They see some serious shit too. Unfortunately a lot of bad cops give cops as a whole a bad name. Cities really need to do something about all the corruption that goes on in the police force.

As for soldiers, if they had not signed up, the government WOULD be drafting. Consider yourself lucky some people sign up and actually want to go. They see some serious shit and go through serious shit, and actually choose to continue. I think they deserve quite a lot of respect.

While we are here in clean clothes with a roof over our heads, they're in mud trenches, sand, and otherwise dirty wet and crazy hot conditions hauling nearly 100lbs of gear around and getting shot at and don't know from one minute to the next if they'll live to see the end of the day. A single stray bullet to the head and it's game over. Sleep? you don't really have time to sleep when people are trying to kill you. There's no bell that goes off for a shift change.

Normally anyone smart enough to be cop is smart enough to get a different job. The few intelligent people rise through the ranks. The rest stay out there on the streets to deal with us. The police forces pick through the morons of society trying to find something to work with.

Murder and Killing is illegal, BUT, if you join the miliitary or police you can kill all you want. Just try not to kill a WASP.

you can? since when? this is news to me. maybe in uncivilized countries...

some people have really fucked up world-views.

Until you have worked along side them, seen them come back from a mission covered in fresh hell and empty eyes, you will never understand.

Ignorance always seems to talk louder than experience.

Yes, but the point is that they signed up for it. Also, these wars are a fucking joke. So sacrificing your mental health and/or risking your life seems that much more retarded.

Cops. Some are OK and some are not. It's the bad apples that use their meager power to torment people that sway people's opinion so negatively. That and the fact that they will all lie to protect each other in any situation.

I chalk the fact that some people out there say "thank you for your service", because the first thing out of alot of these cat's mouths are "I SERVED IN IRAQ FOR 4 TOURS AND HAVE 16 CONFIRMED KILLS. HOOWA!"

....

"yeah... want some artichoke dip?"

That and it's just PC to say shit like that. Maybe they will be running in the next election?
