Reverence for soldiers I don't understand. It's just a job like any other. Generals and officers get my respect because they've actually accomplished something.

LOL generals and officers accomplish something...if by that you mean they were able to get a four year degree then sure. Other wise all they have accomplished is kissing the right ass to move up the ladder. I have much more respect for the enlisted guys who are actually doing the work. Not that all officers are bad (ive met my share of awesome ones) but moving up the ranks after the first couple is all political

But ill still show those guys respect and buy em a drink when they arent being stupid

When I was a young man I would go to a certain army bar and beat the fuck out these fuckers..just because they were assholes. If I could of done it to a police bar without getting arrested..i would of done the same.

I absolutely despise pricks in authority.

False, you are still a boy now so there was no way you could have once been a young man.

Touche. I never have a problem, because I mind my business and don't go looking for a problem (with authority figures). Lived all over California and just about every cop I ever saw would nod and say hello to me. People in the military just acted like anyone else to me - normal, whatever. I think you pretty much get what you deserve from other people by your demeanor and how you treat others. Karma and all that.

Cops, I could almost agree. Almost. They see some serious shit too. Unfortunately a lot of bad cops give cops as a whole a bad name. Cities really need to do something about all the corruption that goes on in the police force.

As for soldiers, if they had not signed up, the government WOULD be drafting. Consider yourself lucky some people sign up and actually want to go. They see some serious shit and go through serious shit, and actually choose to continue. I think they deserve quite a lot of respect.

While we are here in clean clothes with a roof over our heads, they're in mud trenches, sand, and otherwise dirty wet and crazy hot conditions hauling nearly 100lbs of gear around and getting shot at and don't know from one minute to the next if they'll live to see the end of the day. A single stray bullet to the head and it's game over. Sleep? you don't really have time to sleep when people are trying to kill you. There's no bell that goes off for a shift change.

This isn't a personal attack, but when I read your post, what I got out of it was "better them than us".

Honestly, I'm actually in favor of mandatory conscription right after high school. Shit that would be expensive... I hear everyone in Finland (?) gets to keep their piece for life.

Oh that's not the way I meant it. They WANT to serve their country, so I respect them for wanting to do that. We should all respect them, because if they did not want to or did not do it, then guess what, we'd all be doing it.

in order of respect i give:

1. firefighters - please keep saving my, and anyone else's, ass.
2. soldiers - under the guise of defending our country, half of them are nothing more than goons. if they weren't terrorizing people in a desert across the planet, they'd be terrorizing a town near you. the establishment they serve is as corrupt as anything else in america.
...
...
...
...
3. cops - at least 50% goons. on an individual level, never did a single thing for me. unless there's a chance of exercising their equipment fetishes, abusing their authority, or food, they won't lift a finger.

twice, refusing to do respond to my calls of truly maniacal drivers on the highway because i evaded contact with their vehicles.

zero investigation, never mind justice, of a $10,000 crime against me.

refusal to arrest an attacker:
cop: "don't tell me that. if you say he did that, then i have to arrest him."
me: "well, he did it. here's the mark on my head"
cop: "look, blah blah blah i can't be bothered to do my job"

it's small shit too - i waited an hour for a police report, which cost me $35 on top of my fucking taxes, for an hour because barney fife really, really didn't want to get off his fat, old ass. he sat at the counter reading the newspaper for 60 fucking minutes. if you're on lunch, why are you at the counter? if you're at the counter, why are you deliberately killing an hour of my time?

I'm quite interested in hearing about how you've come to the epistemic position whereby you know that half of the Soldiers are goons...

You'll find assholes in every profession, but when you have lots of young men where a majority probably haven't had an easy upbringing, then put them under the stress of a war zone, in a fight nobody really understands, then you don't have the best cocktail for creating well balanced personalities.

This is all misinformation stemming from the Vietnam era whereby judges used to send people to the army to "reform" them instead of jail time.

Soldiers don't have, on average, any worse of an upbringing than anyone else.

Sure there are lots of ahole cops but then there are cops that put up with shit everyday, getting shot at, etc, these are usually the ones that are in the worst areas of a city and still keep their cool.

My thing is don't give a cop any reason to do anything to me. I won't try and test them. I did when I was younger and learned the hard way.

Anti-social sociopaths only care about themselves and not family, God and country so they aren't very good soldiers.

stories i've heard first hand, how goons in civilian life had a great old time throwing their weight around, blasting camels in saudi, stealing batteries for beer money, and so on. i've also met plenty of soldiers (and a few sailors, i'm told the navy draws fewer recruits from the northeast) that seem like ok people. so i call it 50/50.

Anecdotal evidence is very poor in the way of providing actual knowledge.

seriously? they chose to be there. why do they get props for that? fighting for out freedom? freedom from random brown people who have no way of waging war against us?

as for a single stray bullet, give me a break. there are people in the US who live in neighbourhoods where a stray bullet is a risk every day and their tour of duty isn't a few months - it's a lifetime. what props do they get? and they didn't choose to be there and have no realistic way to get out.

patriotic bullshit. you're american i'm british. what does that mean? our parents fucked and our mothers squeezed us out on different lumps of dirt. that's all. doesn't mean a damn thing

Because we have a society of cowards.

It's not really about being brave nor coward, it's more about personality, it becomes something they want to do.
Brave and coward are just words to put either a specific or series of decisions during events and situations into a category. In the end decisions are not based on fear or lack thereof but rather their personality and mental order of decisions/or training to any particular situation.
Everyone is afraid of something and everyone decides a different reaction, that doesn't really make anyone coward or brave as everyone is both depending on the situation....and then some just flat out don't give a fuck.
