Stubbornness I'm guessing. There's a line between going batshit-insane-hippy-green and taking simple steps to not be wasteful.

No, there's a huge chasm between those two actually.
;)

I agree but you'd think there was no line with some of the attitudes around here. I guess that's what I was referring to with just "a line", haha.

old habits probably...it's like giving someone a computer when they never used one before...new , untested ideas...who knows...lots of hate on these forums about being green.

That and it's becoming a fad...ATOT hates fads...hopefully becoming eco friendly will be around for a long, long time.

When something is over-publicized and reaches beyond saturation, it's not uncommon for there to be a backlash.

I do agree though, being green has come up really fast, really quick, and really hard.

Maybe it's because it's really effecting a lot of our day to day stuff now.

not to mention it seems half the crap they say is "green" is bullshit and forced down peoples throats

nobody said anything about buying "green" items but by doing green things (although I guess NOT using the NON-green item could be taken the same). But you have to admit many things just don not need to be used and discarded as they are. People need to just make environmentally sound decisions (like turning lights off and recycling where you can).

boatloads of hate regarding a lot of topics on ATOT...being 'green' is a big one I think.

Recycling is pretty big...I remember watching a dirty jobs episode when he was in the SF recycling plant...they reused ALOT of trash.

Unknowingly, at the time, I think my shoes were made with recycled products, my dogs chew toys are made of recycled products...and they lat a lot longer then convential dog toys for some reason.

EDIT : I must say though, a lot more opinions then lurkers on the topic..

You see 100 posts, 500 views, when a lot of other threads have 50 posts, 700 views haha...

I don't understand how you couldn't reuse them. Even if I can't use them at the time I get them, I save them in a bag in the pantry. I can think of so many damn things you can do with a plastic bag... but lets not go there. :D

Some people do not think about the smalls things...I guess it goes back to being a piss poor person, living/using everything you have, and not being wasteful, keyword is being wasteful....sometimes if you have a lot of money, you can buy a new plastic bag, after you throw that one out...you can buy more gas after you use it all up in whatever vehicle you own.

typically (very stereotypical, I know( but if you have a lot of money, you do not need to think about those sort of things, because you can buy a new one of product xyz...and not think about the side effects it has on the environment.

That and it's a relatively new concept still.. eco friendly, green.

I can see your point. But Jesus, at some point they are thinking about money. Unless you are the god damn CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a rock and roll star, or a celebrity, you are looking at all possible ways of saving money at this point in time. You could argue this with food. Why save food when you can buy new? I know plenty of people who are "well off" but eat left overs. Why not just buy new?

Who cares if plastic takes longer to decompose? Honestly, how is that fact harming you?

Plastic grocery bags are better because they're waterproof, so spills and condensation don't stain my car or make a mess. They also create a better barrier between the environment and my food so my food is not soiled while sitting in a cart, or my trunk, or the garage floor when unloading. They make great cat littler/trash bags too, as well as easy bags to use when taking something somewhere.

You can tell when a society has become too comfortable when people start fretting over the silliest shit and fearing the very things that make them safe, healthy and comfortable.

I guess you're trying to make me look bad by using an Al Gore buzzword, but yea...that's exactly what I said.

It's about cost vs benefit. If I can do something like turning off lights or using CFLs that does not require a major change in my day to day activities, sure. However, something that's a huge pain in the ass like carrying around a bunch of reusable bags, I will not do, because it doesn't really help much and it is a pain in the ass.

That was maybe 20-30 years ago...100-200 years ago it was not a ceoncept....I blame industrialization :).

We never went to Mcdonalds :-( ... always had leftovers ... We had a big family (7 of us), so my parents made lots at once, and saved it for later.

One, maybe two bags...it's not as tough as you think....you just make it sound tough!

steps -
1-buy brown sack while shopping at your local grocery store
2-put brown sack in trunk
3-bring in with you at grocery store
4-have cashier person, or yourself load into sack
5-carry sack in one hand, milk in the other(or bread, whatever is nice and delicate)
6-drive off to house
7-unload
8-put back in car in the morning when you go to work, or whatever is convenient.

I bet you do a lot of those steps already...except maybe 8.

EDIT - you have to do 8...you gotta go to work eventually.

Honestly I have never seen An Inconvenient truth (nor do I care to), and was unaware that Al Gore had copyright on the word "Inconvenience"

Carrying around a few reusable bags is a "huge pain in the ass"? You have other problems then I guess.

We are no where near trash "over riding us" and no where near running out of landfill space. The landfill crisis is a myth, pure and simple.

There are better things to worry about. Stop taking your ques on what to worry about from kid's films filled with propaganda.

I was not basing anything on WALL*E specifically...I just remembered it when someone posted about plastic bags in the ocean the size of Texas.

You are dumb to think that it will not catch up with us if we do not find better methods of recycling/re using.

I do not worry about this every second I am awake, or sleeping...it came across my mind when I walked into Rainbow foods and did not have my trusty brown sack for the first time in over a year...

EDIT : This thread is exhausting...haha

The vast majority of recycling is unprofitable, and worse for the environment than simply throwing stuff away.

We are no where near running out of landfill space, in fact. It's so small it virtually never will "catch up" to us. Pay attention to part 3 to see how silly fears are about landfill space.

Matters where you live, plenty of places are forced to ship out trash to other states.

No, I pointed out an obvious fact. He focused on obvious commentary meant to be funny, ignored the facts, and dismissed the whole based on that.
