old habits probably...it's like giving someone a computer when they never used one before...new , untested ideas...who knows...lots of hate on these forums about being green.

That and it's becoming a fad...ATOT hates fads...hopefully becoming eco friendly will be around for a long, long time.

I'll be green when it doesn't require a major change to the way I do things.

Stubbornness I'm guessing. There's a line between going batshit-insane-hippy-green and taking simple steps to not be wasteful.

Well the ironic thing is that around here being anti-green is VERY fashionable. So isn't that a tad hypocritical then?

Personally I am not "green" but I am certainly aware of where my family and I waste and try to make up for that. I show my kids not to let the water run, to turn off lights, not to waste food, recycle what they can etc etc. I do feel bad about the plastic bags we use, but as others have said, we do re-use them for other things like lunch bags for work, garbage bags for the litter box etc. Yet we still throw away probably 5+ a week. I always have meant to get a couple of large bags for teh grocery shopping.... I think I will do that today.

No, there's a huge chasm between those two actually.

See, those are things you can do that are simple and don't create much of, if any, inconvenience.

Exactly. As I stated above, even 10 little things people do make a huge difference. I'm not talking about "global warming" and all that shit but you can NOT ARGUE that we are running out of space for landfills and losing our rain-forests at an alarming rate.

Its funny how people around here will post some article about how some new species of helper-monkey was found in some remote corner of a jungle, but will mock anyone even suggesting that they use a reusable bag to help save that same jungle.

slight is getting rid of plastic bags and doing the simple thing of getting the reusable sacks..that is simple...batshit-insane would be getting rid of our transportation all together, getting rid of imported goods....that would be batshit.

we live in an industrialized world here, we just need to think about the environment and where we want to be in a few hundred years...not where we will be tomorrow...long term people, LONG TERM!

Exactly. And if "everyone" did it imagine the difference nation/worldwide it would make.

I'm no tree-hugger by any means (noted by my 8 miles to the gallon, pre-catalytic converter Ford pickup truck), but I noticed the HUGE amount of waste when our city changed it recycling process. Now we dump everything into 1 large container. We made the conscience decision to recycle what we could when they did that. When we saw that we ended up recycling MORE than we threw out in the trash it was a bit of an eye opener. I think of all the years we didn't recycle and all those 1000's of lbs of shit sitting in a land fill etc somewhere. Such a shame.

That's a start, that is doing SOMETHING...and apparantly..in AT eyes, you are now green...enjoy your new color...haha.

Before this whole thing, my dad taught us to not leave doors open in the winter, not run the faucet, not leave the lights on, etc...his reasoning was to save money, but it applies to this green day and age as well.

 part of the few that re-use them I am sure!

I don't understand how you couldn't reuse them. Even if I can't use them at the time I get them, I save them in a bag in the pantry. I can think of so many damn things you can do with a plastic bag... but lets not go there. :D

 yet they (most of AT) will shun the fact that anything is going on environmentally..on a LARGER scale.

There's an island of garbage, mostly plastic bags, floating in the pacific. It's about the size of texas now.

Plastic bags are light and get carried from the air into the water.

Our species should try to leave a better legacy than this.

Totally agree. I have friends that chuck them, which I find crazy. Now I just tell them to give them to me.

Some people do not think about the smalls things...I guess it goes back to being a piss poor person, living/using everything you have, and not being wasteful, keyword is being wasteful....sometimes if you have a lot of money, you can buy a new plastic bag, after you throw that one out...you can buy more gas after you use it all up in whatever vehicle you own.

typically (very stereotypical, I know( but if you have a lot of money, you do not need to think about those sort of things, because you can buy a new one of product xyz...and not think about the side effects it has on the environment.

That and it's a relatively new concept still.. eco friendly, green.

When something is over-publicized and reaches beyond saturation, it's not uncommon for there to be a backlash.

We did that with everyone in our condo complex, but now we have recycling.

agree 100%...that's what I am trying to say. Seeing all of those plastic bags is kind of sickening...

I didn't read all this but plastic makes more sense. You can fit like 100 super light plastic bags in the mass of what one paper takes. Imagine all that work and energy now to ship and truck all those trees, then ship that much more mass in bags when they are made. Then all the space and energy it takes to store them some place. Plastic may take longer to degrade than paper but it fills a whole lot less space in landfills and must certainly save a ton of energy in it's overall production. And it can be recycled too. Paper seems like it would take a whole heck of a lot more energy to recycle too over plastic. Plastic just seems the better way to go.

I do agree though, being green has come up really fast, really quick, and really hard.

Maybe it's because it's really effecting a lot of our day to day stuff now.

This is true, but it goes to my idea of -- why not just get a reusable bag...we have had ours for over a year now...

There is a lot of falsity when trying to sell something that is not green just to sell it...cannot think of anything right now though...
