Why do soccer players fake getting hurt all the time?

rudeguy

Lifer
Are they trained to do this?

I'm sure you have seen the videos of soccer players flailing around after getting nudged, trying to get the ref to...well do whatever it is they do with the cards.

I don't get it.

I thought in soccer matches extra time was allotted after the second half for time spent dealing with injuries. So wouldn't being a pussy net your team more time?

The only football players I have seen do this are kickers. And we all know that kickers start out playing soccer.

You do it to gain an advantage, and some people do coach it. Those players are widely reviled until they make the pro scene.

Not so much football, but it seems to be pretty bad in basketball. Not faking injuries, but players seem to be pretty animated when they get knocked down. 😛

That, but it is not the only part.

Soccer is a game where, unlike all other sports, there basically are no breaks, except when you can force them or an accident happens. You are constantly running.
Part of it MIGHT be the players, or even the coaches, want to try and force injury timeouts or potential yellow cards, because it gives the team, though consequently everyone on the field, a well-deserved break. Playing 45 minutes straight, getting a short break, then another 45 minutes, plus extra time due to injury time during regular play, of pure running, back and forth back and forth - it takes a lot out of you. Especially when it's constantly changing speed and a lot of agility, saps you of energy.

However, it's mostly just like any other sport with professional athletes. You try and draw fouls (yellow cards) whenever you can, because that's how it is. Someone pissed you off earlier, they said something snide on the field, maybe long-time rivalry, and in general a lot of pro athletes can very much be assholes in the heat of competition, even if they are all buddy buddy off the field. It's competition - some go as far as possible to compete, even if that means trying to get someone ejected over the course of the game.

I don't watch much football yet I apparently pay more attention than you. I see every position on the field, usually not in the same game, but the point stands - they all try to pull it. Position doesn't matter. You try and milk the system for all its worth when your playing full intensity. If you aren't, you really aren't trying hard enough.

If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying, at least not hard enough. 😛

I call shens. No one the hogs on the line are going to admit being really injured let alone fake an injury. Maybe a QB but they aren't really players.

Any injured person can stand their ground in an American football game, but noway in hell anyone can run 2X 45 minutes with a broken ankle in a real football (soccer) game.

intentionally drawing fouls is the reason why i avoid professional soccer altogether, and soccer is my favorite sport.
drawing the foul means they're not playing the game. pussies :|

and as far as "if you're not cheating you're not trying (hard enough)" - if you're cheating, you're cheating, which playing in an unfair, unsportsmanlike, or otherwise dishonest manner. i couldn't care less if it won the game - it's cheating, and to me, my personal integrity is worth far more than winning a game.

You also couldn't compete competitively at golf with a fucked up ankle but that doesn't make it any better of a sport.

The NBA calls fouls for flopping now. Soccer rewards its drama queens. That or there is some kind of magic healing properties to the yellow card that medical science hasn't discovred yet.

Unless you're Tiger Woods... 😉

they fake injuries because it works. the refs are idiots. they need to have some sort of replay system for fakers/divers, especially on penalties. also, review the game tapes afterwards and if they're deemed to have faked injury for an advantage, suspend them.
