Why do people wait until the last minute to cut you off so they can exit?

Part of me want to say that the thread title was rhetorical, and the answer is "because they're assholes". But, another part of me thinks they're not just assholes, but completely brain dead assholes. Who the hell does that? At some point you have to slow down and think "why do I put myself in danger unnecessarily?"

Doesn't matter if there's a mile of empty road behind you, some stupid assholes will cut you off right before he/she has to get off the freeway.

Do you do this? If so, why?

I dunno.

Back when I had my beat up old Chevy I wouldnt brake. I'd just take my foot off the gas. Now that I've got a nice car I just try to avoid such people entirely.

Love those guys who has to remain on the left lane as long as possible then proceeds to cut through 4 lanes to make their exit, with no fucks given to the other drivers.

I do this, and the reason is I don't get too many chances to practice my karate anymore. I attempt to do infuriating things so you will not break and hit me, prompting a fight, or even better, follow me to yell at me, prompting a fight. So, for any of you that keep it real, know it can go wrong.

What if he just shoots you?

Conversely, why do people line up to get in a lane 5 miles before they need to turn?

This is especially difficult when highways add a lane for exits. If you move over before the lane is added, you make everything more crowded and slow, including the people who aren't even turning.

There are a lot of drivers who believe it's a competition, and must get ahead of every car possible on their trip. Where I get on the highway in the morning there are two lanes on the road heading to the entrance ramp. About 80% of the cars going that direction are heading for the highway. Traffic is moving at the speed limit of 40. And every single day, there will be drivers flying in the left lane at 60 who cut over at the last second to the ramp.

You have to be ready to hit the brake as you near the ramp which is ridiculous. Those cars could have smoothly moved over to the right lane any time in the previous 200 yards but no, they have to cut someone off at the last second.

I drove on the NYS thruway yesterday afternoon - it was filled with asshole drivers. The worst was when a trooper had someone pulled over; everyone moved to the left (per law) lane and merged in politely, traffic had slowed maybe 5mph in the left lane, but was still going the speed limit; cars were pretty close together. Some a..hole flew down the right lane, passed about 15 cars looking for a spot to get in, slammed on his brakes and swerved into the left lane, 100 feet before he got to the trooper's car. I think everyone saw him and thought the same thing, "this asshole is going to pass everyone on the right and illegally go by the trooper." Vehicles were locking their brakes as a result; it wouldn't surprise me if somewhere behind me, vehicles collided. Scared the hell out of me; I was hauling a heavy boat and was barely able to stop in time.

Other a..holes would fly down the right lane between cars going 60 in a 65 zone, and then suddenly merge into the left lane, cutting off someone in order to merge in. And again, brake, brake, brake, brake, brake all the way down the line. These a..holes didn't comprehend that they were the reason the left lane had been getting slower; prior to cutting people off, the left lane had been moving 75-80.

And, of course, you had your idiots going 66 to pass someone going 65, with no one in front of them in the left lane.

Illusory superiority complex.

A study on the subject in 1981 found for driving skills, 93% of the U.S. sample put themselves in the top 50%; for safety, 88% of the U.S. put themselves in the top 50%.

They believe they are a better driver than everyone else on the road. When in reality they've simply misjudged their ability to navigate a roadway.

Of course there are those who honestly made a mistake in judging where their exit was, and need to rely on the courtesy of others to assist them in correcting their misjudgment. If you're not familiar with traffic patterns or what lies ahead, you're not instinctively going to get into a slower moving lane just in case it's the line for your intended exit.

I'm not sure where you live, but in NY, there's usually a sign a mile before the exit announcing which exit is coming up. And, in congested areas, there's often a sign 2 miles before the exit. Thus, "made a mistake in judging" is actually, "has very shitty judgment."

Also, at least around here, most off-ramps give you plenty of time to slow down on them. You don't need to slow down from 70 to 30 in your lane before you get off the highway.

Because all you fuckers drive too goddamn slow!

Except for the part where filling both lanes and merging at the last moment is the more efficient method so in many cases thats actually just a bunch of assholes who are trying to screw over the one guy who is doing it right 😛

Agreed on the zipper merge - when traffic is backed up. What irritates me (as in my example above) is when people could have merged earlier into free-flowing traffic without impacting other drivers, but instead they end up cutting people off at the last second and forcing those behind them to hit the brakes.

I know here in Toronto, some of the highway interchanges are poorly signed. They don't tell you what lane you need to be in until you're right on top of it. So you get people cutting in because they suddenly realize they're in the wrong lane.

For run of the mill exits though, signs are almost always placed a couple clicks back giving you ample warning. So there's no excuse.

Worst ones are the people who cut across the bullnose (the triangle shaped bit of shoulder between the ramp and the highway), making other drivers slam their brakes.

Because they didn't "need" to move over yet, and when they did, you were just in their way.

It's not really difficult. People are selfish cunts.

They are selfish, pure and simple. Almost all driving jackassery boils down to selfishness.

A zipper merge is pretty darn fast moving when people do it right, but there's just no fucking way...

What's worse is when you are in the right hand lane going a little over the speed limit and you are about to exit when a car comes up behind you in the right lane, passes you on the left and then cuts back to the right immediately before the exit and turns off on the exit. I sit there wondering why didn't the driver wait two seconds and exit behind me.

Probably more like my wife, they do not think ahead.

I bust her ass if I'm in the passenger seat and she does something like that.

She is usually a good driver though.

She did it a couple of days ago kinda sorta.

Was looking in her left mirror and over the back to see if could pull in, only thing I said was "turn on your left turn signal so he knows what you're trying to do"

He's either going to let you in or speed up and try to prevent it if being a dick just for a lane change on a busy road, at least they know what you have in mind instead of trying to ninja lane change.

Why they put turn signal on cars a lot of people seem are inconvenient.
