If people would zipper merge closer to the lane ending this wouldn't be a problem. There's no benefit in merging 3 miles ahead of the lane ending, and this can make traffic slower before you add asshole like this to the mix.

Correct if there is a lane-end merge on a highway and high traffic the lane that is getting a ton of cars merged into it will always jam up.

Either stick in the merging lane until the very end (although don't speed past all the stopped cars, be respectful) or go to a lane on the opposite side of the merge.

So...

| | |

lane 1 is merging into lane 2.

Lane 2 will always move statistically slower due to people being dunces and merging too early and playing merge chicken at the end.

Stay in lane 1 until the end or move to lane 3 and wonder what all the fuss is about to your left.

Depends on my mood. Often times lane 3 is fastest actually.

One thing I find kind of weird around here is how regardless of the length of the on-ramp, most people don't speed up to the speed of the road that they're merging onto. One of the on-ramps that I take to go home is .7 miles long (according to Google Maps), yet people are still going 50-60 MPH by the time they reach the 70 MPH road. How do people expect to merge properly going 10-20 MPH below the speed of traffic?

Only 10-20 slower? That sounds like heaven!
I have a cloverleaf loop on my commute and most vehicles infront of me are typically doing 30-40 as they decide they might need to merge onto the 70mph highway.
Thanks! I love driving 35 on a highway when a semi is barreling into us at 75+

Actually most of the time whatever party hits the other party with the front of their vehicle is at fault. Because highway right of way is so hard to clearly define outside of intersections often the rear end rule takes precedence in the real world when these wrecks occur. If there was only a side collision the right of way matters, but someone like me just ensures they are a little bit ahead when getting to the merge point which forces a choice of either slowing down or hitting me with your front bumper (making you at fault).

i call bullshit. links to all of this info you seem to know that others don't.

it is pretty damn obvious, whether at an intersection or on a highway, who ran into who. if i was in a lane and the rear of rear side of your car collides with the front bumper of my car, it's very obvious that you are at fault since i was in the lane the entire time.

LOL, You should see some of the on-ramps in larger cities in coastal southern Spain, hint, THERE AREN'T ANY! You have a stop sign, and maybe 50'. Some of you would actually have to put down the phone, and pay attention. When I am coming down an on-ramp, I am looking forward, and back, calculating with speed, and distance just where I will blend with the madness. ():)

Well, keep in mind that my complaint is when there's a mostly straight on-ramp. If I'm dealing with a curved on-ramp, people are usually doing 30 MPH or less. Me? You just aren't living without a few g-forces, so I go a bit faster. :p

Cloverleaf on-ramps are just about as bad. We've got a small strip where you'll have cars trying to get off the off-ramp and others trying to get on the on-ramp (both part of this same strip) and this is a 65 MPH section. There's a reason why most people avoid the right lane (it's a two-lane road)... it gets so backed up that it's not funny.

There is no always or absolute--liability is fact-specific. Also what applies in my state might be different from yours and many laws are state specific. So there is no use in me just blindly posting links that might only apply to my state and not yours. I know for a fact after doing my research that for example if I moved to Minnesota I would have to change my driving behaviour:

http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2012/10/traffic_talk_who_has_the_right_1.html

In some states those who have the majority of the front have the right of way. In other states the fault is determined completely differently.

With that said, when the rubber meets the road (aka when the insurance lawyers argue before a judge who is at fault) the driver who doesn't let the merging car in when it safely can be done at worst will be seen at fault and at best will lose claims to liability. This is especially true if the driver strikes the person merging in with their front bumper.

it is pretty damn obvious, whether at an intersection or on a highway, who ran into who. if i was in a lane and the rear of rear side of your car collides with the front bumper of my car, it's very obvious that you are at fault since i was in the lane the entire time.

Right of ways aren't 100%. That is why the judicial system often gets involved, things aren't clear cut.

You are correct that in general the car in the lane has the right of way but there is also an expectation that merging cars have to get in and if there is evidence you are blocking a merge by speeding up then in my state you are at least partially liable if there is a wreck. At the end of the day laws are just letters on books, what matters is how they are enforced. If you get in a wreck not letting people merge in, then the insurance company of that other driver will argue they are not liable in the courts/arbitration and probably win. That is what I count on in the 0.0002% chance that I actually get in a wreck being a merge asshole because someone won't let me in. I have learned after two years of commuting most drivers don't have the stomach for a real game of chicken so it is probably all academic.

But please do your own research for your own state before you try getting in a wreck over merging.

In my experience, LA/NYC drivers are neck and neck for the lead.

However, if you wanna see some shiy, y'all should come to Oklahoma. This is the only place in my life where I've seen Semis do 75+ MPH in the rain or snow, even when the speed limit is 70, and when people drive at dusk/dusk without fucking headlights or parking lamps on. HOW THE SHIT DO YOU SEE HOW FAST, MUCH LESS WHERE, YOU ARE GOING WITH NO FUCKING LIGHTS ON?

Ah yes, the on, AND off ramp. Again my calculating principles work here as well. In this instance, I'm really not that concerned with whats behind me, for I have already made the exit. I look right and calculate the moment the vehicle rounding the bend will be dropping in. I will then adjust speed for him to drop in behind, or in front as I make the exit. Keep in mind that part of this calculation is the guy ahead making the same exit. It really isn't rocket science here people, the only and primary thing you should be doing when you get behind the wheel is driving, and not throwing litter out your window! (gosh that pisses me off). But alas, most of you just don't get it, or don't care. This may explain why, in my elder years, I can no longer drive more than 8 hours a day, ya'll are wearing me out.

That works great on a nice, clear road, but you're not going to be able to accelerate all willy-nilly 'roun' these parts. :p Honestly, this off/on-ramp in question is even worse, because there's a barrier for the off-ramp portion that makes it nigh impossible to see a car until it rounds the corner. Also, you're not even taking into account the fact that cars around you will act in what is seemingly a completely random manner. So, frankly, I would highly recommend that you assign more of your focus to them... unless you want to rear-end someone.

I drive by having a sort of "danger level". The safest level is where there's no one around me and it's a nice, sunny day. At that level, I'm a bit more lackadaisical about driving; however, as traffic starts to pick up and the sun begins to set, my "danger level" goes up. As the level goes up, I pay far more attention to the vehicles around me... even any peculiarities such as watching their minute movements to determine what they might do (change lanes without a signal, etc.). Personally, I much, much prefer driving in that first, safest level. :p

Part of me want to say that the thread title was rhetorical, and the answer is "because they're assholes". But, another part of me thinks they're not just assholes, but completely brain dead assholes. Who the hell does that? At some point you have to slow down and think "why do I put myself in danger unnecessarily?"

Doesn't matter if there's a mile of empty road behind you, some stupid assholes will cut you off right before he/she has to get off the freeway.

Do you do this? If so, why?

Haven't you noticed all those crosses and flowers which are death shrines to mostly illegal aliens nearly every mile on highways in the border states and how much they are increasing over the past few decades?

Notice again next time your out how nearly every single one is near or next to an exit on a highway. Illegal aliens don't have a license, no insurance, drive illegal and unsafe wrecked vehicles, then also don't care about being intoxicated behind the wheel, because why should they, when everything else they are already doing is illegal, including themselves?

This is exactly the type of illegal alien criminal activity Trump is talking about, because they will do the exact same things they did in Mexico or South America once they get over here, without a doubt.

Maybe get out of your car and read a few names on those crosses and get back to us with your in depth research there, hot shot. Or better yet, join a fire department for a few years and tell us how many accidents are actually caused by illegals who are driving illegally.

And when you see these accidents on the news, in the papers, whatever, the fact they were illegal is almost never mentioned, but if you look at the accident reports, it's all in there, plain as day.

Does it matter why? You have no control over other drivers so just pay attention, adjust your driving accordingly and go on with your life, which is too short to angst over stupid uncontrollable crap like this.

The fact is, it's not really uncontrollable. People will whine and moan over gun control and all the needless deaths, when anyone with a few hundred dollars and no insurance or drivers license can get a wrecked, junker vehicle and kill someone in it. And I believe vehicles are the number 1 cause of accidental deaths by a massively large margin, but I'm not looking it up atm.

I'd have to see, but one thing that reminds me of is those that are overly cautious. For example, a long time ago, my mom was hit after making a right-on-red because a driver turned his signal on to turn onto the road that she was coming out of, but he decided to go straight instead. She'll commonly cite that as her reason for not trusting turn signals. Now, it's not a terrible idea to be a bit cautious of turn signals, but you can usually tell whether a vehicle is going to commit based upon its speed. Anyway! The point is that "expecting the worst" can sometimes be a bit excessive at times. It's also like how a friend told me that he won't switch lanes if that'll put him directly beside another car. I'm assuming that's to avoid the other car also trying to move over into him, but I'm not 100% sure.

I try to find that balance between being a worrywart and an effective driver.

I have and have seen plenty of white folks names on them too. The first few that went up around me, over a decade ago, were certainly white.

So, how do I identify an illegal by their accident report or cross on the side of the road? Do they smell a certain way, is there some code I need to know, or is knowing the difference between Guiterrez and Smith good enough?

Teach me senpai, wait, is that too illegal a term to use? Sorry, don't mean to offend. Unless Japanese are ok, and it's just messicans?

Voting should be a privilege. I submit the above as evidence.

The first one to play the race card just to make a stupid point, is almost always the most racist one. Which is exactly why you played it.

If illegal Canadians were flooding across the border, and then acting like criminals to survive when they get here, I would be just as frustrated by their criminal actions. But illegal Canadians aren't swarming across the border and committing crimes, are they? Racism not found. Nice try, tho.

Meanwhile, you would also hypocritically deny your "privileged" voting rights to all the "undocumented immigrants" already over here? Even I want illegals to be able to vote, as long as they can at least show proof of residence here. Because if illegals are allowed vote, then maybe some of these ridiculous GOP lap dogs would finally be booted out of office. Of course, the cure could be worse than the disease, but I'm willing to take that chance, and obviously YOU are not.

Yeah there are tons of shitty drivers in every state that I've driven in although a lot seem to be from either NY or CA. My least favorite bunch of assholes are the ones that tailgate me, while I'm in the far right lane going 5 mph over the speed limit (basically keeping up with the rest of the drivers). There's 3 lanes to the left of me to pass asshole, if you think I'm going to speed up even more you've got another thing coming.

There's an old German saying that explains that kind of behavior:

If you lined up every Volkswagen ever made, end-to-end, they would circle the entire globe.

And there would be some asshole in a Mercedes trying to pass them all.
