Why do people in the shittiest cars always want to race you?

A few days ago my friend purchased a 2011 A4 so while the car was getting prepped the salesman let us take an S4 and an S5 on a test drive. I let the S5 rip at a stoplight just to see what it could do and at the next light this shitted out primered CRX with some dude that looks like kid rock driving cuts next to me and keeps telling me to race.

My buddy and I laughed and I said no, he tried two or three more times and then finally gave me the bird and turned.

This happened in my GTI a few times as well, normally I don't do anything just because I'm constantly paranoid of cops around here. What do you guys do?

I don't know but fwiw when I'm even in my minivan I will drive just a littttle bit faster if I'm around a really fast car because if i can encourage the owner to floor it I may get to hear a beautiful car's engine roar. So that's why I do it.

Funnily enough, more people wanted to race me in my GLi than my RX-8. I guess yellow attracts people. :)

Most of the time I just completely ignore them, but if I feel like playing around, I like to give them hope and then destroy it.

I give my car just enough gas to keep about a half-car in front of them the whole time, unless they start going stupid fast to try to win. Then if we catch another light together, I blow their doors off. It's fun to let them think they're hanging with you, then make them think you hit the "NOS".

After that they almost always stay a few cars back from you no matter how slow you go lol.

Has the OP considered its the driver not the car?

He gets picked on in both a GTI and an S5...means his road manners aren't very refined. Probably doesn't signal, edges forward at stoplights, revs in neutral, lane encroachment, etc. In summary, behaviors that challenge other drivers.

Now, its natural to be competitive. It can definitely be a blow to the male ego to be seen as "inferior" or "slower" when it comes to driving.

I used to think I was hot shit at the local karting track. Read all the racing books, had great technique, good lines, form etc. Played those driving sims hours on end. Made JP Montoya an F1 driver didn't it?

Then you run with the big boys. Its very humbling to realize that even with proper technique, practice, attending race school, etc. there are guys out there able to find speed in places where you are already at 10/10ths. And this is on the karting level. Never even made it to formula fords!

These experiences have definitely had an impact on my driving on public roads. I'm now content with being slow, careful and courteous.

I actually drive like a grandma, but thanks for playing.

I've never actually had anyone try to get me to race when I've been on either of my motorcycles. Maybe I just have bad hearing and miss them revving their engines. This is over an 6-ish year period.

What do you guys do?

Pull a 0-45 and put 6 bus lengths on them. It's not speeding, and it's not a race because races involve two cars side by side *cough* :)

Except I don't get people being douche bags when I'm in my fast car, everyone scatters like chicken shit roaches. But everyone comes out of the wood work and wants to start something when I'm in my beater and can't do anything about it... that will soon change. Because of douche bags like that I'm more inspired to put a 3SGTE in the Camry than I am to put twins on the Cobra... starting to not give a shit that it will cost 5x more than the car is worth.

I kinda wanted to do that, but it wasn't really fair. I had 4 full size adults in the S5 and his car was stripped bare to the bone. Plus the salesman was in the car with me as well, that and I didn't really feel like hooning a 70k Audi that wasn't mine

Good call not being your car :( But you probably would have owned him... I doubt even a N/A B18 CRX could catch an S5. Generally people who actually have fast cars or sleepers don't go picking fights with random ordinary looking cars unless the other person is being a prick and asking for it. I'd bet $100 this guy never opened the hood and does his mod shopping at Autozone.

We all had a good laugh about it, the salesman (guy was a few years older than me) rolled the window down and said..."dude you serious? GTFO"

QFT, I once saw one of my dream cars back in 2005 next to me at a , it was a black E39 M5, I was in an Accord, I revved on purpose just to have him give it some gas and let me hear that beautiful note...surely enough he did and I sure enough didn't even bother to follow knowing the obvious...ah boys and their dreams :D

Well I've had a few older Ford Probes/CRX/beater ass Civics with SI badges or I-VTEC badges try and get me to race in my Fusion...I bit a few times. Once was a douche with a 90s civic with a fart can and a I-VTEC slathered all over the side. He asked me at a light to rev my engine...well unfortunately you can't in a Hybrid. He starts laughing at me...and well I couldn't take that laying down. So I talked some shit back to him and at green we both gunned it. Sounded like a briggs and stratton lawn mower exploded next to me...and I smoked him easily. He wasn't laughing at the next light and claimed he 'stalled out'

Otherwise I'm like PhoKing fairly grandma-ish in my normal driving habits. Although I love passing on two lane 55mph highways with this car, you get such nice torque from the electric motor it makes the car feel faster then it is.

Engine swaps are pretty popular in those old beat to shit looking CRX. May not have been as slow as you think.

Yeah, actually a turbo B18 would give it a power to weight ratio somewhere around the craziest factory Lotus Exige. I knew a guy who had one with a regular B18 and no other mods. He eventually sold it (engine swap complications) for a modded 5.0 Mustang and said the CRX was significantly faster. That was without boost, and turbo kits are common.

Highly unlikely that some punk kid with a backwards baseball cap financing a $1500 primered beater of a car with the kind of attitude it takes to flip someone off for not wanting to race, is going to be plonking down $3k+ cash for a B18 much less the actual swap. Like I said I bet he had little more than a K&N, an Autozone cherry bomb special, and a boost gauge that never comes off the stop peg. Cars with actual swaps that are actually fast are done by people with a bit more sense and respect and who know it's going to cost more than the car is ever worth, not aspiring Fast and Furious boy racers.

This kind of stuff pretty much never happens to me, but I've always had a penchant for sleepy looking cars. Heck, I drive a wagon right now, but it's a wagon with a 2.8 V6 and a 5 spd... it can certainly get out of its own way, but I don't rag on it.

Once I'm on the highway going 70-75 though... I like shutting guys down when they try to pass me on the right while there's traffic. :D

I think most guys in this subject fall into three groups:

A) Guys that cannot be shown up, especially in front of their friends/girl, thinking even if it took them 30 seconds to catch up to you after putting a few buses on them, if they pass you they are still the winner and their ego's are salvaged.

B) Just plain ignorant people. Don't know how many times teens have asked me "What kind of car is that? Is it fast?" Or I murder a car on the street and they pull up and are amazed, saying stuff like "DUDE WTF!, what kind of engine is in that thing? I use to have a (insert random slow car) and it was fast."

I try to read up about all cars to see what their 0-60 and 1/4 times are, so I know who will pose a threat before even observing for mods.

C) Guys that just want to see a car destroy them and have fun even if they know they'll lose. I was in my z28 the other day, wishing I was in the ws6 when I saw a Lambo Gallardo on the city streets, and he was actually playing around. We just messed around a little, no real race, but those guys might be thinking along the same lines like "Man can you believe these guy in their pos 60k cars?"
