Why do people collect videos/DVD's?

glen

Lifer
I assume movies cost about $21
I assume rentals are $3
so, if I am not going to watch it at least 7 times, why would I want to own it?

(all dvds)

ive only paid $20 for a few movies which are colectors editions (like lawrence of arabia, and seven samuri)

dvd rentals cost about 4.50 and my average cost for a movie is under $13.50 so iff or a friend of mine watchs it once or twice ive nearly paid for it not to mention if im bored i can always grab a dvd and watch it.

I wondered that myself for the longest time, and it turned out that some people watch movies a LOT.

<< all the movies i own i have watched WELL over 7 times. 😀 >>

Yo.

also, it nice to just be able to pop something in whenever you get the urge..... DVD's are good too. :Q 😉

amish

EDIT-> Both me and my friends RARELY ever buy anything over $20. Mostly in the $17.99 and less department unless it's a favorite or special edition.

oh yeah:

ive watched everything in my colelction at least once, most ive watched 2 or 3 times.

plus im in to home theaters so its nice to have a big collection to show new speakers or a new tv etc.

Either it's a movie that I really would (or have) watched enough to make cost-effective like Trainspotting, TIme Bandits, The Goonies, Dr. STrangelove, etc

Or it's a movie/series that I'd be hard-pressed to find in a video store and is just cool to own (Macross, Evangelion, much anime).

Why do people collect stamps?
Why do people collect CD's?
Why do people collect art?
Why do people collect antiques?
Why do people collect cars?
Why do people collect autographs?
Why do people collect comic books?
Why do people collect dolls?
Why do people collect pottery?
Why do people collect knives and swords?

This is a stupid question.

There are only a few movies I have watched more than once:
Fletch
Fletch Lives
Christmas Vacation
Goodfellas
StarWars series
Cinema Paradiso
I think that is it............

its a hobby.. a very expensive one i might add..

its like colleting cards.. collecting stamps.. collecting coins.. etc etc

good for you?

i have over 300 dvds, all of them watched more than once. if your the kind of person who only watches a movie once, i can understand why you would be confused. but if your like me and own a 32" sony wega, and a 5.1 dd/dts surround sound system, you might think its better than the movies.

ask these people

Rather than go see a movie in the theater for $20 I can just wait a few months and own it for the same price.

Why do people collect stamps?
no idea

Why do people collect CD's?
they can typically be listen to more time than the average movie can be watched

Why do people collect art?
it goes up in value

Why do people collect antiques?
utility/beauty

Why do people collect cars?
up in value

Why do people collect autographs?

Why do people collect comic books?
up in value

Why do people collect dolls?
mental illness

Why do people collect pottery?
no one collects pottery

Why do people collect knives and swords?
You can't rent them

i find it hard for me to watch a movie more than 3 times. unlike a song, i can listen to at least couple hundread times before i get tired of it.
i have to wait until i forget most of the scenes in a movie, usually a year or 2. the experience for me was a lot better than watching the same movie again only a week later.

for cool movies like big trouble in little china (special dvd edition)... i had to put 9.99 out and buy it....
hmmm, then there's clerks, transformers the movie ... that you just got to have...
i don' t have time to type out everything...

but i never spend over 9.99 for anything...
(columbia house is your best friend)

LOL
Such rhetorical questions are apparently lost on you.
People who collect comic books and art do not usually collect them as an "investment" on the hopes that they'll go up in value. They collect them because they like them.
Same reason people collect anything. It's a hobby. I like the artwork, the special features, watching them with friends, showing off my H/T system......nothing i've collected did I ever collect in the hopes that it might actually be worth something someday....

glen: No, the reason people collect *things* is because A: They enjoy the act of collecting, and B: They happen to be attracted to that particular thing. There really isn't much difference between the stuff on my list other than what they actually are.

So no my response wasn't rude, the poster asked why do people collect DVD's. And my answer was really why do people collect ANYTHING?
