Well, certainly people collecting out of a passion not always grounded in reason.
I wondered if that was why folks collected movies.

But, with rental stores it is sort of like you have such a large movie collection, that you need a librarian and a seperate building, and it costs $3 to get a movie out of it, so why own a small collection at home?

Considering I almost always pay less than $13 for a DVD and I have watched almost everything in my collection more than 4 times I have saved money. A lot of my movies I get when they go on sale for less than $10.

I have always collected movies.. Whether it was VHS, Laserdisc, or DVD. I enjoy being able to watch a movie whenever I want.

Also, a DVD is a collectable. I have a few movies that are out of print and are worth quite a bit of money.

I don't like to rent anything. I never want to give it back when it is due. Plus, with my home theater my wife and I don't go out to movies. We just wait until the come out on DVD and buy them. If we like it, we keep it. If not, it goes to www.half.com. :D

Exactly.

Besides, you watch Hot Deals and keep your eyes open and you can get DVD's for far less than $21.00. I picked up Requiem for a Dream (best movie I have ever seen) for $9.99 just a couple of months ago.

Blockbuster charges $4.25/dvd to rent. I can buy a previewed DVD from blockbuster for $8-10. Therefore if I watch it twice, I get my money back. Plus, I still have the DVD so that I can watch it some more or sell it. Since I'm a movie fan, I love watching movies and it is kind of nice to have people ooh and aah over how many DVDs you have.

I never collected VHS tapes because of the poor quality of the picture and sound. I havent been to a movie theater in quite some time now, I only go to see movies that would transfer quite as well to my home theater system (Star Wars, LotR, etc.). I prefer to watch movies at home than at the theater, no messy crap on the floor, no overpriced popcorn, no outrageous prices. I also tend to collect only anime, and foreign films, I rent mainstream titles, and buy a few of them if I really like them.

Also, DVDs are good for archiving, I'm sure somewhere down the road they will release something better, but the DVD standard is quite good for archival, which is something that cant be said for VHS.

Or a few days and see it for free. Go donkey

Exactly why I buy them, and CD's. MP3's can be deleted, tapes fade, and records? Bah! I never collected to many of those for just this reason. I expect my CD's and DVD's to last until I'm old. My tapes certainly won't.

Um, it's just a hobby. Some people really like movies, so much that it can be considered a normal part of their life (like me). To others movies are merely another form of entertainment. There is something special about owning a movie you enjoy, but it's hard to pinpoint. I guess it's just the collector's mentality.

Most movies are in the $15 to $18 range, and rentals aro around $4 here. Also you cant keep rentals. Also, if you buy you can trade with friends, and borrow/lend Many movies.

I only started collecting DVD's for about a year (have 64).The most I ever spent on a DVD is 19.99 and that was for some special edition DVD.Most DVD's only cost 9-18 dollars a flick.

I have a decent setup to watch movies on and I have lots of friends/family hanging out at my place.Having all these movies at my disposal to watch/lend and not have to run my lazy ass all the way to the video store and back is invaluable to me .(not to mention having to return the flick or not having it in when I get there)

I also saw a report today on Blockbuster/DVD costs(msnbc I think)
I guess it only costs a little over a dollar to actually make a DVD and now that DVD's are alot more popular, Blockbuster is worried about the decline in prices in the coming years to actually buying DVD's and how badly it will impact their rental buisness

Yea it might cost a dollar to make the DVD just like it costs a dollar to make a CD but there are royalities, copyrights, middle-men fees that jack the price up. It's not free getting the DVD from point A to point B to point C to the store.

i generally pay 17bux for a movie when it first comes out, and only if its really good and packed with decent special features. then i can watch movie, commentary, special features(thats atlesat 5 hours of entertainment probably) at my leasure:p if you have family they can also watch whenver..and if you feel like going back to watch it again, there it is:p

course i rent a lot too, some movies just aren't worth buying:p

not to mention rental places only carry the vanilla versions of some dvds. if you want the toy story ultimate toybox with all the goodies or fantasias versions you gotta buy it. many films released as barebones dvds that have been rereleased as decent special editions are many times unrentable:p

only movie I own is Kids, I must have seen that at least like 40 times. But people like to have gadgets, that's why they collect them.

ALso, I have used my swords well over 7 times. I'm a ninja though.

I pay no more than $16 of a movie
Rentals here are $4
Every DVD I own I have watched 10+ times. Yes, I am a movie freak.

You do the math ;)

<< i have over 300 dvds, all of them watched more than once. if your the kind of person who only watches a movie once, i can understand why you would be confused. but if your like me and own a 32" sony wega, and a 5.1 dd/dts surround sound system, you might think its better than the movies.

ask these people
>>

I'm not necessarily a movie freak (have about 10 DVDs), but I've got that 36" XBR WEGA with the home theater.. :D (Overall, it's the best $6000 I've ever spent!)

exactly... not to mention, if you have a plethora of movies, and you get bored, when you watch a movie you haven't seen for a while, its like watching it for the first time. You pick up on all kinds of little things you never saw before...

I just don't like going to the movies at night anymore. There's just too many teens who don't know how to act in public. Then there's the crowds, and the cost. On average, it costs me $30-$35 dollars for me to go to the movies, and I almost never get to sit where I want. DVD's for me at least, are a bargain.

And for the record, the average price is around $17 for a DVD now. Someone needs to bring back the days of the $10 DVD.

"Why do people collect DVD's??"

I ask myself the same question everytime I buy a DVD. I'm up to 600 now. Yes 600..

I've watched them all at least once though.

I am completely stupid when it comes to renting movies. Typically I ALWAYS return a movie late. So from Blockbuster, it's $5 to rent, and another $5 on late fees. Assuming a movie is $15-$17, if I'm going to watch it more than once I'll just buy it.
