why do people bother getting married.

if people didn't get married they could break up instead of divorce, much nicer and easier! what's the difference between living with someone and actually being married to them?? you could even have kids together. people should just "go out" instead of get married.

tradition for the sake of tradition, and to relieve the pressure and/or brainwashing to get married that is put on us by family and society.

personally i agree with you, and don't plan on ever getting married. i don't think the government needs to get any more involved with my life, and i think that ideally i would be happier with a woman who is not insecure about not being married.

I believe that to marry someone sends them a message that they are the only person you desire to be with for the rest of you life, and in that message is contained your devotion, faithfulness, love, and mutual servitude to that single person. It establishes a unit of a family to lay ground for raising children. So many of the social dilemmas today are fueled by children growing up in broken homes without two loving parents. Just my 2¢.

Tradition for the sake of tradition is by definition gratuitous. Some tradtions are founded on principals however, that whether or not you agree with the origin, they do have the capacity to promote healthy societies. It is my belief that marriage is one of them.
