<< For me, it's not the car ... The Ricer Kids of today (white/black/hispanic as well as Asian...you don't have to be a particular color to be an @sshole) are the equivalent of the "streetcorner punks" when I was growing up. We had loud POS cars too, with really loud cassette :)roll stereos in those days. And most of us didn't have any respect for authority, private property or manners. Same sh!t, different generation. >>

I agree completely. Hate the people, not the car ;).

Police should be chasing after ricer with exterior lightings and lenses completely in non-compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle safety standard(which requires: amber or red for turn signal, standard halogen or real HID for headlight, red for stop, red lenses for stop..) and fine them heavily rather than going after speeder going a bit over the limit. When you're looking from a distance, "ricer white" turn signals are hard to recognize as a turn signal. Hard to tell means it's dangerous for others.

a lot of people consider my car (in sig) "rice"... just becuase it has the "R" on it (despite the fact that it actually is pretty damn fast)....

Personally, i like the way it looks, and it doesnt bother me what other people think. I think spoilers, 17" wheels, and stickers can look really cool on a car.

There are a lot of things that look dumb on cars, doesnt have to be "RICE" trucks that have been raised 3 feet are annoying. People who drive cadillac SUV;s are the worse, becuase you know there is no way in hell they are taking those offroad to risk scratching the paint. And i saw this old lady driving a WRX today--- that is such a waste. SHe doesnt need that car. I DO.

so- to conclude, RICER's can be cool... some look really good-- not everybody can afford all the bells and whistles and cars that actually go fast. IN the real world, nobody really needs to go that fast anyways, so its not a problem. But if having a car that looks fast makes you feel better.. than more power to you-- we have no right to complain. And there are lots of things way worse than ricers. (*cough* suvs!) :)

Why the hell is a red turn signal "completely non-compliant" with vehicle safety (double) standards on a civic when it's perfectly fine on a damn domestic truck or minivan? Someone tell me what I'm missing...

couple days ago, I saw the worst ricer of all. A 1996 BMW 318i with a 747 wing on its back. Damn I almost laughed my head off when i saw it. I swear this white dude thought his car looks bada$$. :D

I don't mind the well done jobs. Some really do look good and clean. However so many are hack jobs that look worse than my case experiments (yeah, some of those look pretty bad). The other thing I strongly dislike is erroneous HP claims. Example:
Intake 10HP
Exhaust 15HP
Spark plugs 5HP
Spark plug wires 5HP
Air filter 10HP
Cold air mod (removing turn signal) 5HP

That'd make a 120HP civic DX pump out an extra 50HP. Yeah right.

Not everyone does, but WAY too many. And before you say "what about domestic cars that do that", I dislike those as well (note the thread about the V-6 Mustang GT-R) :)

heh.... I don't know .... there's this road in the Detroit area that is like rice (modded domestic) / street drag (cams firebirds..etc) heaven. I saw one yellow BMW that had some new rims a wing and some exterior mods. I thought it looked sweet actually. Stuff like that i have no problem with.... like others have said in here... it's the person not the car. Again, if the car looks good...then good. lol. But some people are rediculous.
I like watching everyone racing around like chinese sushi :p

<< What street near Detroit? I probably know it. >>

i would guess he is talking about gratiot. It is loser heaven over there. Nearly every 18 year old with a civic is there. What a joke. Adding decals to your car, whether it is calvin pissing on something or an aftermarket company which may or may not have parts from is, stupid. Those of you with them are laughed at by everyone else. Exhaust tips, lol.

Basically, from your post, i would assume you crave attention so badly that you will do anything to get it. Did mommy and daddy not hug you wnough?

Yo,
Disclaimer: I am Asian in California, so know "ricers" better than most.

I don't mind ricer cars per se, it's the people I dislike.

In California of the 1990s, before the recent economic recession, the "ricer" culture became part of the overall materialistic Asian lifestyle I find abhorrent. People in their 20s and 30s living with their parents so they can spend more money on ephemeral pursuits: cars, expensive watches, jewelry, restaurants, clothes. Education and independence seem relatively lacking by comparison to previous generations and other ethnic groups, and an unusual propensity for ghetto slang.

To top it off, they drive like morons, which results in higher insurance premiums for the rest of us.

Its only the jackasses that try and race all the time that annoy me. Yesterday, some tard in a Mitsu Mirage with the body kit from hell (it was attempting to look like an Evo VII) was weaving in and out of traffic, cutting people off... just being a dick in general. Those are the ones that annoy me. Otherwise, I just laugh at the pathetic amounts of Hondas that have park benches stuck to their trunk and decals all over them.

What the hell are you talking about? Yes the steet is Gratiot, and I enjoy watching everyone be crazy out there. It's not like it's a 1/4 mile track made for racing...it's just a place to find out whos car is better than whos off the line. Yeah most of them are 18 and CANT AFFORD to upgrade their engines to be competitioned other than stock. Take that into consideration. I don't race or flaunt anything... I don't have anything to show off. Some of those cars are actually nice not everyone has civics....as a matter of fact i've only seen a couple out there. I'd rather go out there when I have nothing to do and watch than sit on my ass on my computer sometimes. It's just having fun, lighten up a little bit man. And what's this about my mommy and daddy not hugging me enough? Where did you pull that out of? Your ass? Don't come at me like that. Maybe you're the one who's mommy and daddy didnt hug you enough to be ripping on other people for no reason.

<< Can someone clue me in on why they are called Ricers? >>

Because it all started with Honda Civic's, which are Japanese, therefore associated with rice. It's really a very inacurate term however, as I have seen plenty of 'riced out' ford probes as well :).

heh...true. Most of 'ricing' came from the model cars from overseas and the style came across to the US

I think "rice rocket" eventually evolved into he who tricks up a Japanese car is a ricer.
I still maintain this is nothing new, just a different generation. It's about posing.

Yes, rice is used when somebody takes something to far

rice is in teh eye of the beholder, but some things are obviously rice

ex)

sticking decals on your car (any) if you're not sponsored- what, are you a rolling billboard or something?
altezza's- belong on altezza's
dual exhausts for your POS 4 banger- you like losing HP cuz you dont' have enough backpressure? idiot....
huge alumnimum wings- yeah, 19 second cars have a tendency to go airborne....
not 2 tone, but 3tone!!!~ paint schemes
overly outrageous body kits/fender flares/z3 gills etc etc etc- your car aint a freakin z3 buddy; body kits can look nice, as long as it's not overdone
sportin emblems that don't belong on yoru car- your car isn't a type r, you're not fooling anybody. the best is when you see stupid crap like GTR emblems on a prelude (yes i have seen it)
single wiper blade conversions- the freak are you thinking?
led window washer nozzles/mufflers- the freak are you thinking?
neon lights that glow under your car- stop watching the fast and the furious...
racing stripes - see aluminum wing
fake intercooloers blow off valves whatever- this goes back to the original definition of rice, which was making your car look faster than it is...
rollin on donuts/blackies/replacement tires, whatever you wanna call it- spent too much money on decals? can't afford rims buddy?

It's that much funnier when you realise how much some people *spend* to only get a few hp (that is, when they are getting ANY hp).
Anybody notice the theme of *appearances* and how prevelant that is?

I don't hate ricers, I just think it to be a very idiotic way to spend a person's money. It decreases the resale value of the vehicle (or at leasts limits the resale market for the vehicle). I like to tease my wife by asking her how that muffler, that spoiler, or those tail lights would look on my Accord.
