So I work at CompUSA as a second job now, but I question myself as to why I got back into retail.

One thing that annoys me is indian people asking for discounts. Do they think they're at the street market back in Hyderabad or something. Is it because they're brought up this way? Can someone explain to me?

Its because it freaking works. Even at places like CrapUSA you can talk a good amount of money off a TV or something expensive. I've gotten 300 bucks off the listed price just by haggling in a civilized manner with a manager.

So you tell me if its worth it?

The problem is, they are probably haggling with the wrong person. You can't haggle with a lonely sales floor person. You have to haggle with the person authorizing the $1K+ sale (the manager).

That being said, I'm white and we've had stuff thrown in for free (mostly store warranties.. then again, we've spent more than $15K @ Fry's) when we've made big purchases, but when I go in to buy something, my intent isn't to haggle them down to a lower than advertised price.

My neighbors, who are Indian, are exactly the same way I am. If anything, they spend more on stuff than they should. For example, the dad was looking for a 19" LCD monitor, I pointed him toward the Dell 1900FP for $400 at the time. He goes to Fry's and buys some $750 Sony monitor. He didn't want to bother with ordering it online ;)

Then again, my Indian friends tell me that my neighbors aren't Indian, they are white people in disguise.

Wow, I just spent an hour reading this whole thread when I was suppose to be working:). All through the thread I agreed and disagreed on a lot of stuff. I just wanted to lend some input into this whole situation. I am indian, and was born here in the US. Went to a decent undergrad and am now gonna be a second year med student. I can say that my dad is guilty of haggling and I use to be so embarrased whenever he would do it. But as i grew older i realized something, ITS NEVER WRONG TO ASK, you'll never know what you could get. The one thing I liked about my dad is that he was never arrogant or overly persistent. He would just ask nicely and if the sales guy said no he would just ask if the sales guy could do anything for us since we were buying a lot of stuff. I would say 95 percent of the time we would get something. Its not really trying to get something for cheap, its more the perception that we got a deal that no one else is getting.

Over this summer break, pretty much the only break im gonna get till the shiz hits the fan, I wanted to get a nice HDTV, damn $2000-$3000 for a TV. I tried everything to see where the best deals would be at. Big screen TVs are never on sale. So I decided to work part time, nights and weekends at Worst Buy. Basically most home theater stuff is like 30-40 percent off and the extra cash wouldnt be bad either. They placed me in the home theater department and so this past week i've had lots of experience with what you guys are talking about. By far Indians come in and tell me about how they can buy a 32 inch widescreen HDTV at walmart for 200 dollars. I mean I dont know what to tell them, "sorry we dont sell turds with electrical wires coming out of them". Concerning personal hygiene, wow, most smell horrible. I mean indian food is awesome, Im a huge fan. But if a meal is garlicky I always use some mouthwash or something before I leave the house. Most uncles and first generation indians dont know of this concept and Worst Buy it is very evident.

Worst Buy is probably the most unethical place place to work at. 24 more days till my discount kicks in and im out.

Sounds like my last summer, that was my exact attitude as well. During my final week there, I hurt my back (moving) so I had to call a day off but they wouldn't let me. The next day I told them that I quit over the phone and I was lucky to move in to a new house and get a new number. They were pissed but thats what they get for making me work while I was hurt.

Let me start by saying, I am an Indian and I work at a major insurance company in Canada. I work in life insurance and health insurance. I kid you not, everytime I am given a client with an indian name, I cringe and die a little on the inside. It's always "vhat you have and how much?" and "can you give me discount". They will always come in "shopping around" for an insurance plan without realizing that every insurance of one kind across all companies are priced literally within pennies of difference.

They don't know what they want, they don't know what their needs are, they don't care to listen to advice. All they care about is "something cheap". And once you give them that "something cheap", it's always "can you do cheaper?" and "I have to talk with my wife". When they call back, it's never to make the purchase, it's always about the dollar value in coverage for dental and then more haggling.

Often times they don't directly ask for a discount. They use them dhabba bazar flee market techniques. Seeming dis-interested, asking the advisors for details on multiple products, just a whole waste of time. The prices are NOT NEGOTIABLE. In over 1 year in this business, I have not yet actually had a legitimate sale to an Indian client. And the handful that actually bought called back with more questions and even cancellations.

Eveything in this thread about Indians being uneducated, un-hygenic, low class, etc is true. They come to the civilized world and expect that everyone is their slave. They don't want to work and want everything for free. They are maybe 1% of the business volume but require over 50% of all the time, effort, energy and escalation. The engineers are 10x worst, nickle and diming prices over the phone and telling me why a certain product is -EV in the long term. I mean, no f**king sh*t, we are a business selling financial products. You don't like it, don't buy. Plain and simple.

you can haggle anything.

I've haggled shoes at a Sears store, clothes at a Gap, refrigerator at a local deal and yesterday I haggled a recliner at a La-z-Boy store. The only place I've never been able to haggle is Best Buy. oh and I'm not Indian

My father used to even do that in the 60's at Sears.

Just most people won't.

That was a bit harsh for a first post, but so be it.
