Gujratis are known for being the very stingy but yet being the most showy. They will try everything to impress others like dressing up, buying imitations of branded items, fake american accents etc etc but ....yup...still cheap bastages. They own most the motels around but in academics, they are the most dumb fvck ignorant POS's. I went to undergrad and met lots of guju's but none in grad...hmmm..wonder why? These guys as you may know, own most the motels around town and their last name is either Shah or Patel. They are also renowned for being completely oblivious of anyone who is not guju and would rather DIE than helping a non guju.

Tamilians are on the other hand more simple but thats about the only positive adjective. They are the generic stinky guys who go around without taking showers and giving other guys a bad name. If you think Gujratis are bad, these guys are the grand daddies. They wont cough up anything....even a dollar. I was living with some and god it was a nightmare. Every time for monthly bill setllement, it used to be a nightmare. The monthly bill used to come as the same but of course the grocery and other utility bills always meant a little plus and minus. But nooooooooooooooooooo, how the hell did the bill come as five dollars more???!11!!!!1?? They used to act as if it was a big deal. OMG, just pay the frigging bill and get on with it. Of course they are very smart in academics. I think in my Grad lab, I was the only Non Tamilian. I knew many Tamilians who doing PHD's in several different topics. But then I also knew a Tamilian who saved up $45,000 in his PHD of 5 years at a monthly stipend of $1800. He never ate out, he never went to the movies and wore the same clothes. At the end of PHD if someone asked him what he did in college, I would dread to hear him answer. He ate the same POS (sambhar which is a popular dish). This guy had enough sambar powder (bought in retail from India by packing in suitcases) to last him a lifetime. OBTW, many of them are vegetarian for religious reasons  If ever a Tamilian comes to eat with you, run out screaming or make an excuse ("Yes I think I am coming down with testicular cancer"). These guys are vegetarian freaks ("Why are you killing the innocent chickens?") I used to love telling them that my favorite dish a medium rare 20 oz Applebees Porterhouse with mashed potatoes just to get a rise out of them.

If you belong to any of the above 2 categories, then fvck you. You are worst of the worst and deserve to back to your POS shanty town in the middle of nowhere. If you are not, then good job on being a person who has a decent opinion of living and doesnt put money above everything else.

oh thanks god I have your approval as an acceptable indian!
hahahahha. that post is so sad it's funny

I know. My POS shanty town in the middle of nowhere would be Wilmington, DE (I'm a gujju, hence worst of worst). I grew up in the US (not quite ABCD) amongst many different Indians, so I find it amazing when people have such hatred for gujjus, tamils, punjabis, bengalis, <fill in type of indian>.

I've been in retail at a place that sold office supplies, computers, and furniture. I've been haggled by middle easterners as well as Indians because they assumed that I got a commission. They figured that I'm depending on the sale and ask for wiggle room. Since I understand that it's normal from where they come, I just politely told them that I don't get a commission and the store was a fixed price retail location. If you just explain the store policies, it works out really well.

I've actually had a worst time with smokers after telling them they couldn't smoke in the store.

Back on topic....If you don't ask, you don't get. I saved $600 when buying HDTV at HiFi-Buys. Circuit City and Sears were also willing to give discounts. The thing is not to talk to a regular sales rep who really does not have the authority or the power to make things happen, but instead to someone who does. Also shop during Business Quarter-End when store managers are trying to make their numbers.

I agree... some people have gone overboard with the hating. However, I will be the first to admit that all Indians are cheap bastages in general :D

This 'unity' you speak of is the reason at a 'diverse' college such as mine, there is no diversity....indians hang out only with indians, asians only with asians, blacks only with blacks, etc. Yer holdin back progress!

Because they aren't suckers like most of the rest of us? I do the same thing. I refuse to buy things from retail stores like CompUSA because they aren't willing to match the prices I can get if I buy online. I bought a new lens for my camera recently and got them to drop $50 off their price by mentioning that I could buy the same lens for less online.

Everything is negotiable. You can't blame someone for trying to put less of their money into CompUSA's pocket can you? If anything you should admire them for it.

There is a way to negotiate and a way not to do so. Being rude and smelling bad don't help:p

1st gen immigrant Indians who do not imbibe the culture here are parasites - they are here to make money - just like a prostitute - money is everything to them - you are talking about haggling at retail - just see how much haggling indian engineers/ professionals do for Government Grants for Minority Owned and Funds for small businesses - they are all rich and do not need the govt.'s aid yet they all leech out the funds meant for genuine minorities (including genuine indians)...

small architectural firms / civil engineering firms owned by Indians hound Minority Funds till the grant officer gives up - thats haggling at its best ...

Instead of telling one statement that doesnt amount to crap, why dont you actually try to make a decent attempt at bashing me? Right now you are the smelly tamilian in his undies sitting in his unfurnished living room whose sambar is boiling over the laptop in the kitchen.

Thanks for a sensible post. You dont sound like a guy who would give the rest a bad anme. I dont have a problem with people doing whatever they want. However I do have a problem with people being so extreme in their behavior that people can make threads such as these.

Anyhow, I have realized, how people have these post about Indian toilets having no toilet paper and Indian people smelling (can't find the original thread, but that's a similar one) and Indian people bargaining. Don't people have any respect? Especially how the Indians are always degrading themselves just (like above) because they feel they have to join in. Don't you have any sense of national pride? So what if your accent is funny, so what if your hair is funny? So what if you fvcking skin color is different, you are different to everyone else, and there is no point in trying to fit into someone else's image of what you should be.

The same applies for other nationalities. Just because you are born in England, but are of Hong Kong descendant, does not mean that you are not Hong Kong-ese (for the lack of a better term). You are who you are. Just because you live in another country does not mean you have to change you clothing style, or your religion (ok, maybe driving style, but that's different).

Some of my thoughts on this can be found in this thread.

Basically, the jist being that it seems most Indians ARE comfortable enough with themselves that we can poke fun at one another without getting all riled up. A lot of Indians do ask for bargains, and, like I said earlier in this thread, if this thread were about Jewish people, chances are someone would've been in here yelling and screaming about it being racist.

Like they say, those that are most well off are also the ones that don't brag about it. Indians have the most expendible income of any ethnicity in the US. A few people in this thread have cited businesses their family or friends own. I'm pretty well off. We don't need a thread on it though, because again, I think, on the whole, we are comfortable with who we are.

you are a guju, arent u?

and its "Most Indian People" in ur conclusion....???

Yes, technically I'm a Guju. Why wouldn't it be MOST Indian people? Not all Indians are like that. I've met some really nice ones that understand how to have class, have fun, and live life.
Haha I find it funny that a Guju is taking issue with this.

In India (from the experience I had) pretty much everyone dislikes Gujuratis for this very reason.

Note to all the other white boys: If you see someone doing this its probably a Gujurati.

Maybe they do that because of people like the assholes in this thread. Asshole.

I think Anand should really close the Off-Topic forum. Its pretty much full of useless people. And thats including half of the Indians.

We were just talking about this today, me and some friends. I'm Indian and I don't know why. I think the ones you encounter are not familiar with things like sales and think you have the power to cut them a deal as if you own the place. They don't realize that you just work here and have no incentive to offer a discount to a stranger.

Yes there are. Quite a few actually.
I really didn't know that. I wouldn't have guessed it, that's for sure. I didn't know folks in India wiped their butts with their hand and rinsed their hand off in a communal bucket till a week ago, either.

That's not true, what some of them (who can't afford TP) do is use a mug dipped into the bucket to rinse their hands with clean water. No one dips their dirty hand into water where other people have dipped their hands.

Before I say anything: I AM INDIAN, both parents originally from Bombay, and I've actually been there.

I worked at Best Buy in the Home Theater department and my family owns a French-Indian restaraunt in Manhattan. _MOST_ Indian people are very cheap with no class. They want everything for free and supposedly can't afford whatever they are looking at unless you lower the price. Its really disgusting. They don't seem to treat people well and can't understand that the people that work there aren't directly responsible for the prices or negotiation.

However, there is a way to negotiate and there is not way to negotiate. Most Indian people don't understand this.

PS: Mods if this is offensive, I'll take it down or edit the post. Regardless, this is how I feel.

I think alot of people that work retail share your sentiment

I worked in retail for 4 years and I hated serving Asian and Indian customers because of their persistent haggling and terrible hygene habits.

Yes, but working in the IT field full-time I'm used to meeting certain nationalities that have never heard of anti-perspirant or soap, you just have to stand back abit and breathe through your mouth. some people say that it is all the curry they eat, but that is BS one of my co-workers eats it at home and has left-overs for lunch and he smells just fine.

It's not the food, you're right. Sometimes I feel like just telling them about deodorant and that in the US it is expected that anyone over the age of 13 uses it. Some people are seriously not aware that they expected to use deodorant because of cultural difference and/or that they need some because the brain ignores smells that are persistant. I think a little pamphlet handed out to everyone at immigration in the airport would be nice.

Hmmm, that's funny. I was just looking at a Samsung DLP at CC. I told the salesperson that I was thinking about buying it online because I could get a $180 rebate from fatwallet. He offered to give me $100 discount on an extended warranty and $50 off the price of a home theater system. Neither of these were advertised deals, they were discounts he offered to throw in if I bought it there.

My friend always bargains at places like Target. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Once he bought a new driver for about $75 and got them to throw in a golf golve and a sleeve of balls. Regular salespeople at dept stores like that may not have the authority to give discounts, but the managers certainly can if they want to.

Like I mentioned before, high ticket items like a DLP, you can get discounts on. Asking for one on a $900 laptop already marked off $300 with $100 rebates is not one of those items.

Depending on the store/manager, they will "pack-in" extended warrenties. That is, lower the price of the item enough to get you to buy the extended warrenty. The extended warrenty is important to them if they're struggling with their percentage (warrenties to sales). This is what all managers care about.
