My GOD that was annoying. I worked at Circuit City for 4 years and it NEVER ended with the Indians. They just kept doing it, and never accepted that we don't negotiate prices.
"Can you give me the rebate in the store?"
"No. You have to mail it in."
"That's a hassle. Give it to me now."
"Sir, this rebate is from T-Mobile, not Circuit City. We cannot give it to you in the store."
"T-Mobile has to give you kickbacks. Why not just give me the rebate?"
"First off, we simply cannot give you the rebate. We do not negotiate prices. Secondly, if I knocked it off now, nothing is stopping you from sending in the rebate anyway."
"But I am your customer. Can't you give me the rebate now?"
"Does this computer come with this mousepad?"
"No."
"Can I have this mousepad?"
"No."
"Are you sure? Its an expensive computer I deserve a free mousepad."
"Sir, we do not negotiate prices."
"I just want a free mousepad"
....it just never ended.
So someone is probably spending, I'm assuming $1k+ and you can't throw in a mouse pad?
If I'm spend a couple grand at a store I will haggle in something like an extended warranty or something!
Considering its against store policy, no, I cannot throw in a mouse pad. If someone is spending, assuming $1k+, is it really that difficult to pony up another $2?
Tell me why you deserve an extended warrenty for free. ESPECIALLY on something like a computer. Understand that margins are EXTREMELY small on computers at a place like Circuit City. Roughly 2% at time. Basically, throwing in the warrenty is all loss for the store. What is the benifit...so you can tell all your indian friends, and they can all come and also attempt to reduce profits?
Welcome to America.
Well, ok fine, maybe not computers, what about home theather audio/video equipment? In the mid 90's we went to purchase a nice home theater system, guess what, we got extended warranties on EVERYTHING at no extra cost! What did it cost the store? Nothing, everything is doing just fine!
Oh, and do you have numbers to backup 2% profit?
I don't have numbers off hand, but when we worked there, we got everything at store cost with our discount. A $1500 computer generally came down no more than to $1450, and that varied by brand(sony highest profit, emachines lowest).
HT isn't as bad, but its still a loss. The PMI on warrenties is signifigantly higher than on anything else in the store, so it hurts the store regardless. That practice was known as 'packing cheese'. Now, we were told we do not negotiate price, but we were SPECIFICALLY told that 'packing cheese' is immediate termination.
