I think it's interesting that, (up until this post at least), no one is crying racism or whatnot for fs5's comments. However, you replace the word Indian with Jewish (among other potential choices), and forget about it...

I normally just turn them over to a manager. I don't havt the time or patience for it.

I'm Indian, and I won't deny that this "haggling" thing is true. In fact, my Dad's guilty of it, and he knows it too. :)

Fixed it for you.

And yes, in India, haggling is expected when you go shopping.

Because they're smart shoppers?
My first guess was that they were Jewish Indians, but I was afraid to say that for fear I'd be persecuted. There aren't any Jewish Indians, are there?

Much of the rest of the world haggles regularly when buying goods. I love haggling and will not hesitate to do so in any situation where I think I've got a chance to get a better deal.

BTW, many of you do Price Matches, rebates, combo deals, etc. That's somewhat similar, just indirect.

I consider it haggling when you see a hot deal and try to price match somewhere else and throw in some extra bonuses. Any deal that is unpublished and requires approval by a manager or something really is bargaining.

I never said it wasn't. :)

The funny thing is, some of my Indian friends fail to realize this when one of their own does reverse haggling. I have this Indian business associate I do work with. We'll agree on a price for the work (IT work mainly), then he'll try and be a cheapskate and offer less. My ass always says hellz no and gets the original amount. A few other people (indian) somehow get surprised at this and take the lesser pay.

I really didn't know that. I wouldn't have guessed it, that's for sure. I didn't know folks in India wiped their butts with their hand and rinsed their hand off in a communal bucket till a week ago, either.
ATOT's bringing me a long way.

LoL.... my dad does that quite a few times... works at times...

Before I say anything: I AM INDIAN, both parents originally from Bombay, and I've actually been there.

I worked at Best Buy in the Home Theater department and my family owns a French-Indian restaraunt in Manhattan. _MOST_ Indian people are very cheap with no class. They want everything for free and supposedly can't afford whatever they are looking at unless you lower the price. Its really disgusting. They don't seem to treat people well and can't understand that the people that work there aren't directly responsible for the prices or negotiation.

However, there is a way to negotiate and there is not way to negotiate. Most Indian people don't understand this.

PS: Mods if this is offensive, I'll take it down or edit the post. Regardless, this is how I feel.
