This. My wife can't figure out the Tivo after 5 years, but she sure can manage people effectively.

I don't get the people defending this person. First a disclaimer, I do work in IT. However, I absolutely do not expect users to be familiar with the technical details of computers - that's our job. I do expect them to have some modicum of common sense (which is sometimes expecting too much, unfortunately). For example, if the user in question had called up and said they have a Blackberry charger but they aren't sure how to hook it up, that would be a perfectly valid question. But putting a Blackberry in a charger that's not connected to anything and expecting power to magically appear out of thin air is just stupidity. The automobile version of this problem isn't about engine repair, it's never putting any gas in your car and then wondering why it won't go anywhere.

I love those tickets. For metrics they count the same as the calls that take me days to solve.

I've been in IT for 11 years and unless they're abusive, I'm never irritated in the slightest by our customers. I get paid the same either way. If it weren't for people's ignorance, I wouldn't have a job.

ill 2nd that.

i work helpdesk, and common sense is. typically ur IT staff is not as well versed in the knowledge of your job, and there in.
I work for hospitals taking calls for them ,going all the way from password resets, all the way up to application support and what not.
and the calls we get are ridiculous. user just do not care what so ever. but i would never tell them there job is stupid. computers do not get there fair share of respect
this might be off topic
had this discussion with parents concerning technology and videogames. saying that kids should get out more, and that video games is making them fat.. i would have never gotten into computers and technology had it not been for all the video games that ive played in the past and present and probaly future

back to topic, yes as much as i hate dealing with people that are stupid.. i am grateful they make mistakes, because they get me paid

Alright all you haters of "dumb" customers, here's why you want them around:

http://blog.netflix.com/2008/1...-customer-service.html

Essentially, Microsoft SilverLight (used for Netflix streaming) is so easy to use, Netflix is laying of 50 technical specialists.

So next time you get a call and the solution is simply plugging in the power, smile, fix the problem, and thank your customer; if you're on-site, give'em a hug and a deep sigh.

A friend called me over to check out a router that was just being weird as fuck. Only computers plugged into certain outlets were working, and the WiFi AP was working perfectly. Half an hour of fucking around later and unplugging every single networked device there, I found the problem; there was one network cable connecting two ports on the switch, it was making it go batshit.

Different friend, "OMG NO INTERNETS, only one one computer though!" Check NIC, cable is unplugged. Thank you, have a good day.

Go to my dad's office, "The network is broken; X can't use her computer" "The network is not broken, you are, plug the damn computer in"

People always ask me why I don't do "something with computers." Fuck that shit, either I study my ass off for some kind of engineering job or work IT; not my piece of cake.

RIM was on crack when it designed the 72xx and hell even the 87xx stands. Absolutely the most pointless use of materials ever.

haha I have one like that in my current job. He's always giving solutions, which on paper aren't too bad, but doesn't realise that I have a million other tasks to attend to and our final solutions may not be the best but are the most practical given our time constraints and laziness.

edit: FUBAR FT....

Ah...assclowns. Yeah, they are the ones who do something that is not valid or approved and break something, or it just happens naturally but they try to fix it or improve it and not tell us.

....and after they break something and call us....they say they didn't do a thing.

lol

Half of my company comes to IT when they dont know how to do their job. So when I tell them, that should ask their supervisor they look at me as if im speaking Spanish. Then later i hear that they are throwing us under the bus because we know nothing.

Not to be a dick, but that means you probably aren't adding much value yourself.

You should probably find a position where you are, they are more profitable (and rewarding).

Or maybe not. Some people are so stupid they don't know how stupid they are.

I get a call from a user that has been using a BlackBerry (7290) for about 2 weeks now, maybe a bit less. She explained that her device is not working. I asked what the problem was and she said it was either turned off or the screen had gone blank.

At this point, it could be something simple, or it could be a million other things. I take a few initial steps and ask her if she had been charging the device or if she knew how to turn the device back on. She explained that she had been charging it but didn't really know how to turn it back on. I advised her of the button (or on these most any button will turn it back on) to turn it back on and still nothing.

I headed down to her office and she handed me the device. I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I asked again if she had been charging it and she said yes. I then asked her how she had been charging the device:

Me: "How are you charging this device when you say you charge it?"

User: "I put the BlackBerry right in here." (Here being a plastic craddle that came with these old 7290's - all along with no cables even remotely close to it)

Grrrrrrr.......

I then showed her the micro usb cable that is plugged into her computer and laying on her desk (even though I showed her this 3 times before when I setup her office).

Oh....you have to plug it in for it to charge?

PC Load Letter......WTF DOES THAT MEAN!

Can't wait for the holidays!

WHAAAAAAA, I have a job where I have to deal with people who are technologically illiterate...WHAAAAAAA.

Be happy you have a job and quit your bitching.

BTW-I know people who work in IT who don't know how to plug in a laptop.

You're wrong. The 7290 was the best device RIM could offer. You could run that thing over with a car and it would still work (we tried). These new ones break if you drop them on a pillow.

People in almost any service profession can say the same things. Try working in an emergency room. Going to the ER because they have diarrhea/loose stools after devouring a Taco Bell dinner and washing it down with a liter of soda. You don't say?
