If you can figure out how to plug in your microwave, why can't you figure out how to plug in your blackberry?

Put me in front of a car engine and watch me turn into a 5 year old. :p

You do know how to check to see if your engine is RUNNING don't you? Same thing here..

Remember this my ATOT IT monkeys: If it wasnt for the morans who don't know how to charge a blackberry, your job would be in lower demand.

the difference between that and IT is.. every joe schmoe thinks he knows how to work a computer....but not everyone knows a car.

i for one work in IT and hate it when a user thinks they know whats what, and make my life hell...on the other hand when i bring my car to the mechanic.. i let them do there job. i dont get in there way, i dont tell them i dont feel there price is wrong.

thats why alot of us IT guys dread dealing with most end users.. not to mention like mentioned before.. the lies.. dont lie about teh stuff you do. if your not supposed to do it. then dont. i dont come to your job and mess with your stuff and then want support. dont mess with mine :)

and about the 5 year old bit. yes most people young to old. they all pretend like there mind goes away when it comes to computer's.ive had people refuse me to help them, because they had it all special and the way they wanted it. im like i cant help you, unless you let me touch the computer.
my uncle for example. he thinks he knows what he's doing, 9 out of 10 times messes something up. i give him the advice, and they forget or do the obvious.. alt + ctrl + del is not rocket science.

sorry for the long tiresome post. someone needs to write like an IT guideline for people.

you know like "remember to plug the machine or item in" "make sure you dont have caps on" etc. etc. etc.

Times when I just want to slap them:

"I can't log in." - User using keypad to type the numbers in password but numlock is turned off

I need you to log off the computer. "You mean shutdown?"

"I can't print." - User closed tool bar in Word so the Print icon is no longer visible.

Just got back from a call I got. User said they couldn't log onto a computer. I go up there and the computer is in standby.

Why? Cause the pay is good. I wouldn't be anywhere near this field if it wasn't for the pay. Heck, bagging groceries is more rewarding most days.

Pfft whatever. Everyone has their own talents and abilities. Early in my career I was always helping the Sr. VP of Sales with his PC. I thought he was an idiot, until I saw him work the room at a sales call where the customers were hostile.

I don't know, but it's true. I sold computers for a while, and it's remarkable how assertive, intelligent individuals over the age of ~40 suddenly go blank and lose all vestiges of trial & error problem solving, pattern recognition, and common sense when presented with a glowing screen of any kind.

Our board just got blackberrys. They have had nothing but problems with them and have been calling the carrier constantly for support. Each and everytime the help desk for the carrier is useless and they end up calling me down. I fix it in a few minutes and go about my day. Today I demanded a cell phone company polo shirt so I can look the part.

That's an awesome idea!

You guys must be jerks or something, I have found most to be very nice and thankful. Seems to be a rewarding experience, though I've only been working for 5 months.

Also you are in IT because the pay is good and the job is easy as balls 90% of the time. And you are supposed to like people in IT, if you hate people but like computers go back to school for computer science/engineering.

Unless Tesla coils have become commonplace I don't think getting annoyed at someone for believing something will charge without being plugged into something is that out there.

There are several things out there that charge by induction. My electric toothbrush just needs to be set in it's stand and it charges.

id have to say that 8 out of 10 people are nice, 1 is very difficult, and the other 1 expects everything to work no matter what.

Maybe that woman could run circles around you on a different field of knowledge. We all could be reading about a low level IT guy complaining about someone too busy and important to worry about such things as charging electronic gadgets.

If I met Ghandi, I doubt I'd criticize him much for not knowing how to replace a water pump on a 84 Volvo. If I meet a car mechanic, I don't expect him to expect me to know much about cars at all. I just want him to fix the problem as quick and inexpensively as possible.

Yeah... but the stand is still plugged in.
