Why do I work in IT

I get a call from a user that has been using a BlackBerry (7290) for about 2 weeks now, maybe a bit less. She explained that her device is not working. I asked what the problem was and she said it was either turned off or the screen had gone blank.

At this point, it could be something simple, or it could be a million other things. I take a few initial steps and ask her if she had been charging the device or if she knew how to turn the device back on. She explained that she had been charging it but didn't really know how to turn it back on. I advised her of the button (or on these most any button will turn it back on) to turn it back on and still nothing.

I headed down to her office and she handed me the device. I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I asked again if she had been charging it and she said yes. I then asked her how she had been charging the device:

Me: "How are you charging this device when you say you charge it?"

User: "I put the BlackBerry right in here." (Here being a plastic craddle that came with these old 7290's - all along with no cables even remotely close to it)

Grrrrrrr.......

I then showed her the micro usb cable that is plugged into her computer and laying on her desk (even though I showed her this 3 times before when I setup her office).

Oh....you have to plug it in for it to charge?

PC Load Letter......WTF DOES THAT MEAN!

Can't wait for the holidays!

You are in the wrong field if it pisses you off that someone doesn't know how to operate the electronics you're supposed to support. It would be different if she was blaming you but I'm sure she felt like an idiot after you left. Isn't that enough for your ego?

I have come to realize that any problem is ALWAYS IT's fault. If I didn't realize this, I would not be here.

these are the best customers. they keep you in business, the fix is easy, and they really appreciate what you did for them (usually), though they may feel a bit silly afterwards.

it's the assclowns calling in for help and proclaiming they are technical geniuses and make your job in trying to help them more difficult, that drive us to insanity.

Unless Tesla coils have become commonplace I don't think getting annoyed at someone for believing something will charge without being plugged into something is that out there.

Guess you've never helped grandma program the TV channels before. :p I look at it like this, if I can help someone else out that's just another good thing I've done today. I guess I have a more positive outlook than others. ;)

I generally go out of my way to not make them feel that way whenever possible.

I just want to know why a percentage of the population (that is at least moderately intelligent in everything else) become like a 5 year old being taught calculus when technology is involved. I mean if you know to turn on your TV, why can't you find the power button on your computer? If you can figure out how to plug in your microwave, why can't you figure out how to plug in your blackberry?

Ah...assclowns. Yeah, they are the ones who do something that is not valid or approved and break something, or it just happens naturally but they try to fix it or improve it and not tell us.

....and after they break something and call us....they say they didn't do a thing.

My guess is they are too afraid or lazy to try to figure it out themselves. Too afraid might be valid because the don't want to mess up an expensive piece of electronics. Too lazy to think about it for more than 30 seconds before giving up is worse.
