I go early because that way I can get out early, go hit the gym and then have the rest of the evening to myself. Plus waking up early makes you feel better for some reason.

You might get out early but you also have to go to bed way earlier and all my friends dont' do things until 10PM. I get off at 6:40, get home at 7:30, eat dinner, hit the gym anywhere from 8:30 - 9:30 and then hangout for awhile.

Plus waking up early makes me feel like crap for some reason...I have no body clock whatsoever. I go to bed around 1 and get up at 8 all week then the weekend rolls around and I'm in bed at 4 and get up at 2. If it wasn't for an alarm I'd never be able to get up before 10 as I always sleep without waking up from 1 to 8 when i'm rudely awakened by loud beeps...

My business card and company address book say "Software Engineer". End of discussion.

lol...that's because you put them on there! that doesn't mean you ARE one. if i was a banker, i could put "Banking Engineer" on my business card, that wouldn't make me an engineer.

There are BS degrees in Software Engineering, in case you didn't know. Also a lot of graduate work is done in Software Engineering. Therefore I'd have to say your argument is not completely correct.

Well that's what I said, if it says "Engineering" somewhere in your degree, then you're an engineer. These other computer programmers are just giving themselves titles to try and latch onto something.

I knew the PE argument would come up, but that's on a state-by-state basis. So it doesn't apply to everyone.

Simply put, you can't just call yourself something and expect it to be legitimate. If that were so, we'd all have Dr. in front of our names.

good enough. they can call themselves an engineer then.

IT engineers are REAL ENGINEERS that do high-tech and skilled work such as answering phone calls and installing Windows on computers.

Everyone is an engineer now.

I wanna be a janitorial engineer, mommy!

I think nurses should start calling themselves doctors soon.

Cool. I guess my job as "Software Engineer" with my degree in "Computer Science and Engineering" (w00t UCLA) do qualify me as an engineer. But all i do is code all day at work anyway.

If that's all you think IT is about, then you are obvoiusly a clueless monkey. By the way, I'm a Network Administrator but because I design networks as part of my job, some people consider me a Network Engineer. Bah I say.

yeah, i think that's why i chose ucla over other schools that offered straight cs, ce, or eecs (with all that ee junk). cse at ucla is more focused on architecture and software/hardware interface. not many other schools offer this type of major.

My official title is "Software Engineer" but I'll be the first one to tell you I'm NOT a real engineer.
My degree is in Computer Science. Hey, I guess that makes me a scientist....NOT.

But don't call me a programmer either. I do a lot more than just write code. I actually prefer the title of Software Developer. It is much more accurate for my job. I meet with clients, gather requirements, design databases, design applications, write code, do testing, write documentation, train users, troubleshoot, etc, etc, etc. I'm involved in every step of the process of developing software, so I'm a Software Developer.

But according to salary.com, Software Engineers make more money, so I'm happy to keep the title.

Back on topic, I usually get in around 9am. If I didn't have to have my son at school by 8:25, I'd probably show up to work around 10 or 11.
The reason: I stay up too late because I'm a gamer and I hate getting up early.

EDIT: I do find it amusing when my friend who has a history degree refers to herself as a historian. LOL, I guess if you have a 4 year degree in psychology you are a psychologist.

Also, I'm not sure about the US, but in Canada, no accredited Engineering program falls under Bachelor of Science, it's either a Bachelor of Applied Science in __________ or with some schools, a Bachelor of Engineering in ________

I have a couple friends up here at Waterloo taking "Software Engineering" under the Applied Science Faculty, however straight up for school they can't be accredited with a PE license, rather they have do a set number of tests in order to be granted PE status. (Several more than the normal ethics and such) So even programs that are titled "Software Engineering" aren't seen as being true Engineering programs by the governmental bodies. At least in Ontario.

Meh, that's my 2 cents..

As far as I'm concerned, unless you've got a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering you're not a true engineer. The rest are just hacks who couldn't cut it but want the title.

Yes I'm joking. Engineering is becoming a more generic and used term for a lot of things. MCSE are legally allowed to use the word "Engineer" in their title even though ereet engineering organizations get their panties in a bunch. I don't care either way to be honest but the illuminati obviously do. Then again I think 'hacking' means to crack, and that 'free software' means freeware, not free as in speech.

Of course I don't think that's all they do. I was just joking around. However, they're not engineers even though they like to call themselves some sort of engineer. Like someone said before, it's like nurses calling themselves doctors. Or even paralegals calling themselves lawyers. One is on a technical level/expertise much higher than the other.

1. miss traffic
2. miss the long lines at the restaurant/shops during lunch
3. get lots of quiet time after everyone's left so I don't have to deal with their godforsaken interruptions...which allows me to actually get sh!t done.
4. watch the conan o'brien show before going to bed

Well - not so for our programmers - most of them get in somewhere between 9 and 10. Now they all do a great job and stay late - so in the end they work as many hours as other people, if not more. But I'm thinking what is it with engineers and not being able to wake up early? Do you guys have the same thing happen at your companies?

P.S. I get in at 8, and I love it. Waking up at 6:30 was tough for a few weeks but then I got used to it - you get so much more accomplished in the mornings. So I fail to see what's the big deal with getting up early.

Edit: Changed subject to make everybody happy.

I am anengineer and I get in around 9 so I'd say it's in the genes. ;)
