Why do engineers get to work so late?

I work at a software company and we have a pretty loose policy on what time you have to get in. However, most people get in around 8:30. Well - not so for our programmers - most of them get in somewhere between 9 and 10. Now they all do a great job and stay late - so in the end they work as many hours as other people, if not more. But I'm thinking what is it with engineers and not being able to wake up early? Do you guys have the same thing happen at your companies?

P.S. I get in at 8, and I love it. Waking up at 6:30 was tough for a few weeks but then I got used to it - you get so much more accomplished in the mornings. So I fail to see what's the big deal with getting up early.

Edit: Changed subject to make everybody happy.

I think technical people work better later at night.

I know for one I'd rather come in to work at 10am and stay until 7 then come in at 7:30 and leave at 4:30 like I do now. I don't have a family, so it's not like I'm missing out on spending time with them by staying later. As it is now I feel exhausted until at least 8:30 because I get up so early for work.

We show up to work late because we can. This is also why we dress like slobs. :)

No, he's been following me for a while, ridiculing every post I make. Mill has way too much time on his hands.

For me it's because of the time diffence.
All those irritating clients from the US who cant get it through their skull that it at least 6 hours later here (amsterdam).
So I end up being at the office until 20.00 hrs.

;)

a: programmers are not engineers. show me a "programming engineering" degree in this country.
b: since when does working 10-6 instead of 8-4 make you lazy?

Well that is pretty much what you are saying...

on another thought, a quote straight from my professor. "The best engineer is a lazy engineer." Lazy people are good at finding ways to make things simpler and work easier.

WTF, are you high on feces or something? I can only remember two posts that you have made in the past year. This one and the one about road rage. Other than that I don't give a flying fvck about your silly ass and your delusions of grandeur.

There was another thread as well. Don't care to look for it now. Anyways, looks like you have some hidden animosity (sp) towards me. Which is funny, b/c I didn't even know you until now. Oh well.

Yeah, I noticed that too :)

We think a lot harder than you non technical folks, so when we sleep, we sleep deeper, making it harder to wake up in the morning :)

Well, for starters because the rest of the business world starts at 8 or 8:30. Secondly, because when you need something from somebody else you have to wait until they actually get in. Thirdly, I'm just curious if this is a comman thing.

Most engineers that come in late, do so because they KNOW they're going to end up staying late. Happens all the time.
