One of our programmers comes in at 5pm and works all night long. He comes in with a case of mt dew and leaves in the morning sometime. He gets vasts ammounts of code churned out late at night because no one is bothering him.

Sounds like a management issue to me.

I can understand the appeal of working when other people aren't around to minimize distractions, but I also know from experience that those people produce the code that is the least likely to be easily maintainable.

There was another thread as well. Don't care to look for it now. Anyways, looks like you have some hidden animosity (sp) towards me. Which is funny, cuz I never met you in my life. Oh well.

Dude, I don't give a flying fvck about you. I didn't even recognize your name before that road rage thread.

Ditto. Yet you're the one replying to all my threads :)

Two threads? I mean WTF... high on feces I guess.

One of the programmers here starts at 10am, and complains if we want to throw the server down at 8pm or during the weekend cause that means he cant work.

Software engineer can be summed up in one word: "programmer".

I don't think I'm the one who is getting pissy about people who work different hours, nor do I try to run people off the road. Yes, high on feces. I've never heard a 16 year old accuse someone of being high on feces. I was just alluding to your penchant for eating a lot of feces. Figured it made you high or intoxicated. You should try to get some help for that addiction.

why do you have to concern yourself when other people start work. im that person that comes in after everyone else and you dont know how annoying it is to have everyone just want to sick their nose in your business.

No, he's been following me for a while, ridiculing every post I make. Mill has way too much time on his hands.

No you're wrong. He's generally a moron to everyone. Even with the countless times he's been proven wrong :)

Well - not so for our programmers - most of them get in somewhere between 9 and 10. Now they all do a great job and stay late - so in the end they work as many hours as other people, if not more. But I'm thinking what is it with engineers and not being able to wake up early? Do you guys have the same thing happen at your companies?

P.S. I get in at 8, and I love it. Waking up at 6:30 was tough for a few weeks but then I got used to it - you get so much more accomplished in the mornings. So I fail to see what's the big deal with getting up early.

Edit: Changed subject to make everybody happy.

I don't get in till 9:30 the other 2 engineers at our company get in at 10:30 or 11. My boss(owner) gets in anywhere from 8-2. The operations manager gets there at 11 normally. The president gets there at 9 usually. The only person who gets theree before 9 consistently is the controller.

I've been getting up at 8 everyday for 6 monthes and I still haven't gotten used to it. THe hardest part of the day is waking up. I hate mornings. I'm more productive at 1AM than 8AM. That and I can't make myself go to bed early....I mean if you get up at 6 or 7 you have to be in bed by 10. At 10 the late edition of sportscenter hasn't even come on yet...

Ever think it might have to do with a personality trait or type? Think about it, most programmers sorta have the same personality type. Therfore, the way thier brain works, it's difficult to get up early and they feel they can get more done with less people bothering them. Problem solved.

i usually get to work around 9:15-9:30....my boss, the other main programmer/tech person comes in any time of the day, unless he stays at home to program. everyone else at the office i think gets here around 8:30 or so...they're all here when I get here regardless. i'm horrible at getting up early.....i blame the snooze button mostly, but i just seem to function better later in the day.

HA! I'm an engineer, and I roll in between 9 and 10 sometimes. Funny, I didn't know anyone noticed. I had a 6:30 meeting this morning (international attendees), and it almost killed me. My problem is I like to stay up too late. I can't get home at 6, eat dinner, and then make it to bed a few hours later. I need more time to myself than 3 hours/day.

I did that when I worked at a company with flexible hours. It cut my commute time substantially by allowing me to miss the rush-hour traffic.

I ussually get in between 7 and 7:30, although having to do the daycare thing alone has pushed that back to 8 or 8:30 lately. I tend to get in later in the winter, but early in the summer to take advantage of daylight hours after work.

Makes no difference as long as you get your hours in ... and I often end up with 50+ hour weeks, so that's not an issue.

Our company does have a "core hours" policy ... everybody is supposed to be at work between the hours of 10:00 and 15:00 local time.

One advantage of coming in late and leaving late (or vice-versa) is that you get some hours in without distraction ... especially works well working late on the W. coast ... no calls from the E. coast :D

Actually, i prefer two words: "code monkey". ;)

The point is: you aren't actually an "engineer", in that you're not legally one (and can't be with a CS degree). I suppose calling a housewife a "domestic engineer" makes her an engineer too?

Back on topic.... some technical people (especially those who work long hours) like to have some "uninterrupted time". If they're not dealing with clients, it makes a lot of sense to do work "after hours"... one can get a lot of work done without your boss, all the traffic, etc. Another alternative to this is to get to work at 6am... I did this quite often when i worked in industry.
