The ability to attain higher-than-posted speeds is a safety feature. In general, a car you can drive with confidence is one you are ultimately safer in. I know that I feel marginally more able to handle situations thrown at me in our V6, 176 HP Santa Fe than I do our I4, 126 HP Sentra.

Also, above legal speeds are needed for emergencies.

I think they actually have a legal speed limit now, rather than "safe & prudent".

My bus has a rev limiter rotor on it... 5400 rpm. Assuming I can GET there without blowing up my poor engine, that would be, what, 105mph? Pssffftttt...

/hops in v6 Fiero and goes screaming down the fwy at 120mph.

You can also blame consumerism: People like allegedly fast cars and will pay considerably more for them. Imagine a world where all cars were only capable of 80mph... What's the point of buying an exotic sports car if it can't go any faster than a Toyota Echo?

Once you eliminate power and speed from the equation, you're left with fewer reasons to buy expensive luxury and sports vehicles.

That opens up a whole new can of worms.

Yes, a lot of revenue is generated from traffic law breakers.
On the other hand, if all traffic was computer controlled the all around savings would be greater than the money brought in from offenders.

Wrong. Montana tried that, but they went back to a set limit of 80 mph on interstates and 75 mph on state routes. It seems they had too many people trying to argue that going 120mph on a crowded road was "reasonable and prudent".

For those of you saying it's a right, it's not. Driving is a privelege that you must earn a license for, not a right.

btw, I don't think cars should be limited either, I just wanted to clear up that first part :p.

You will note that my post contained specific information instead of just saying that the person was wrong. :p

They will take the comcast approach.

Buy all the hp and handling you want, pay for it dearly if you use it!

A transponder system will report the driver's habits in detail to law enforcement agencies and CLUE for insurance purposes. This data will determine how much the driver pays for tags, title fees and insurance. If their max speed is really up there, their insurance could be (read will be) cancelled.

If the "electrically inclined" user attempts to defeat the system, the ECU disables their vehicle instantly and they have to get a tow and pay outrageous fines to have the system reset and would have a probation period determined by their files.

Cheers!

Heaven help you if you emergency brake and hit a deer...this is a BAD idea----^

And the reason people buy fast cars isn't just to speed, it's because they have better acceleration, braking, and handling. There are (some) sports car owners who don't speed at all, but do autocross or something similar, and also enjoy the added safety provided by driving a car that can perform.

Of course, most people throw away that added safety by driving their high-performance car closer to the limit of its performance than their econobox.

either that or get rid of speed limits all together.

or keep things the way they are for the money

in a country where any idiot can buy a gun?? you can't be serious....

Accidents would not be a problem in your example as it would be logged as no fault.

Cheers!
