Why are we Californians charged such high gas prices now?

Ask your idiots in Sacramento to open up the coast for offshore drilling.

Uhh no... i like the beaches having no oil on them thanks. I live in Santa Barbara and we DO have some off site drilling... occasionally theres some spillage and the beaches get screwed for months/years.

So what are you going to do one day when oil becomes even more scarce and states like mine, Texas, just decide we won't ship it your way as it best suits fueling our economy?

I love the CA mindset of "not in my backyard" but then expect everyone to bend over backwards providing them with the things they don't want to produce in state and then bitch about the price. This will continue to bite you in the ass and one day it will be your undoing.

Uhh.... you DO realize that digging for more oil is just a band aid right? The answer is to find alternative power methods.

Why don't you get off your high horse. If you moved to CA and paid the premium that we all pay to live here, you wouldn't want it either... it wouldn't affect the price of gas greatly anyway.

I wasn't bitching about the price. I live here and accept that there's a financial premium to do so. But since you seem to know whats best for the county - why dont you lay out a 5/10/50 year plan on how CA should sort out its gas/energy issues.

Hey dipshit I am not on a high horse and I LIVED in CA and will never go back except to visit my brother. Drilling for more oil is more than just a band aid it is a REALITY at the moment so you need to deal with it whether you like it or not. The funny thing about the whiners like you is they always say things like "THEY need to find alternatives" which puts the responsibility on someone else (what else would I expect) and makes it sound simple. You solve the problem why don't you? You wouldn't be such a whiney ass about prices then.

You do realize that if there was an economically feasible alternative it would already be in mass use noe don't you? Oil is damned hard to get to and get to a usable form to put in your tank so if there was a feasible alternative it WOULD be in use. Any alternative is going to cost more than gas does anyway so who are you going to complain to about the price then? Who will be the scapegoat of your delusional conspiracy crap then?

Haha, way to show maturity, "Hey dipshit". Yeah, I'm whining alright....

Are there any other personal attacks you want to throw out there to prove yourself?

Just speaking in terms you can understand. 😉

Since you seem to know it all, show me exactly what effect, supported by facts, drilling off the coast will have.

Include:

Amount of oil to be gained
Effect on CA/US gas prices
Effect on coastal ecosystem
Comparable cost benefit to the hundreds of other potential drilling sites world wide.

I'm not an expert, but I would have to agree that its likely due to California's very strict enviromental laws. The same reason you electricity and natural gas are so much mroe expensive too.

Maybe CA has higher taxes on fuel than other states?
Maybe CARB has mandated cleaner burning gas which is more costly to produce?

Maybe demand is just that much higher in CA?

I don't mind high gas prices. If it forces NIMBYs to rethink our infrastructure development and switches the cities to grow vertically, not horizontally - all the better.
Mass transit, compact urban development FTW

Everything in CA is more expensive- cheeseburgers, gas, you name it. Cross the stateline into AZ and everything drops in price for no apparent reason.

while i don't love what i pay for gas, i'm not going to complain about it. there are PROs and CONs to living in any state, and in CA gas/energy prices are just a CON. one thing that i will complain about is that we in CA cannot purchase a new diesel vehicle.

Of course you would be wrong. California produces over 700,000 barrels a day of oil (2005), fourth in the country behind Lousiana, Texas, and Alaska.

It's not our fault that so many people from your lousy states moved here.

While you may produce a lot, the CA Energy Comm. says you only provide about 40% of your own oil.

Tougher environmental laws I guess.

I think that's BS.

But it's true. CA laws require special formulations that increase the cost of gas in your state. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

And that still doesn't explain the 30-40 cent increase over the last month. It's gone up for no good reason, oil prices aren't up.

What the hell gives??? Look how isolated it is! The chevron across the street from my place is the cheapest here in sunnyvale, and it's at 3.16 for regular unleaded.

....sorry, I just feel like ranting about this, it shot up like .30 in the past 2 weeks.

The cost of living in california is higher than anywhere else in the rest of the country...

High gas prices cause some short term pain, but I think the benefit of stimulating alternatives is worth it. Business usually don't get motivated to take action unless their customers are pissed.

That can be applied to pretty much anything in CA.
I also love it when they come in here and say "all you people would die without us!! We have everything! We are the leet!".
I think CA is the one state that could probably disappear or fall off the coast and the whole country would not only fail to miss it, but would also be a little better for it.

Where would we put all the hippy entertainment stars then? I vote for Wyoming.

That's a really cool map.

I guess since that site tracks gas prices it makes sense for them to have a map like that. But it's very interesting to see the price differences around the country.

I live in northern Maryland, and its the same here also.. up 30 cents in the past three weeks.. from $2.19 to $2.49

Granted, its not "California" prices, but its still a raping.

I hope it doubles.

Edit: only in California though... I like meeting californians but do not like hearing about it like it was a magical place where unicorns and gnomes frolic.

San Francisco 3.102 🙁

Taxes and additives that CA requires.

I mean, seriously...the refineries are right there in Oakland so you would think it would be cheaper. Nope.
