On the topic of the TV license...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licensing_in_the_United_Kingdom

I don't think that there's any single image/video/whatever that could express how ridiculous that is. The ONLY and I mean ONLY way that I wouldn't mind paying for a TV license would be if it eliminated all commercials from my program, like HAL9000/neckarb/whoever said.

The best part?

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

It's because of the Radio broadcasts that the blind can watch just as well as any seeing person but it's only half of the broadcasts available, so... half the price.

You've obviously never visited either.

I just find the idea of paying for someone to broadcast into your airspace hilarious. This court ruling in Canada sums it up nicely:

So in 1982, responding to a Canadian court's finding that all unscrambled radio signals are public as a matter of physical fact even if the communicator did not intend to make their content readily accessible to anyone within range, the DOC (Department of Communications) decided to require receiver licensing only in cases where it was necessary to ensure technical compatibility with the transmitter.

It's quite clear that radio broadcasts are a public good with near-unlimited free rider potential. The fact that saps worry about a fake "TV detector van" adds to the stupidity of it all.

I pay because it's worth the money, not because I'm worried about a van.

That's illogical. Whether or not you consume the good, it is still there for your taking with no adverse effect. The technology has zero marginal cost. You don't even pay to the broadcast companies, you pay it to the government as a tax.

No offence, but in 2011 that seems like the stupidest business model I have ever seen in my life.

i dunno, unemployment rate is theoretically lower than the us based on a quick google. but they do have a stupidly large number of people permanently living off "benefits", perhaps its harder to fire people as well so that might be taken into account. uk has not been a tech job power house for some time now though.

The money ends up with the BBC even though it goes through the government, the BBC get the money from TV licences, and just because I can get away with a crime, doesn't mean I should...

Oh, I should add: my industry is the finance/legal sector, not tech/software. Generally high paying starting jobs to highly educated people. There is no reason I can see why salaries would be so low in the UK.

Yes, but ours are mostly males, which means that the cream of the crop of women will fancy a well trained chap like myself all the more.

Besides being an Englishman is the greatest thing you can be, all women know that.

Except every chick I know who has fucked an English dude has said they suck in the sack.
