why are receiver units usually so bulky?

my amp (Outlaw 750) weights in at 73lb.... And that is just the amplifier.

I think the box it came in weights more than your SA-XR57 which has a Class D amp.
100x7W@6Ohm at 1KHz and with a 0.9% THD? That's bad...

Where are you getting .9% THD? From the manual:

Total harmonic distortion rated power at 20 Hz-20 kHz 0.09 % (6 O)

Anyway I hooked up my Denon AVR-1603 and it doesn't sound any better than my Panasonic. In fact there is a barely audible hiss coming out of the speakers with the Denon hooked up that wasn't present with the Panasonic so the SA-XR57 is going right back.

edit: THD on my denon is 0.08% at 8ohm, 0.7% at 6ohm. My front speakers are 6ohm btw.

Read footnote 1. I hate all damn liars (the manufacturers I mean) when it comes to specs. 0.09% is only applicable when it is in stereo mode.

Well I don't know. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense:

Total harmonic distortion
rated power at 20 Hz-20 kHz 0.09 % (6 O)
0.9 % total harmonic distortion at 1 kHz

But my Denon manual says something similar:
(8ohm, 20 Hz ~ 20 kHz with 0.08% T.H.D.)
(6ohm, 1 kHz with 0.7% T.H.D.)

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. Either way, I don't notice any distortion on either amp. I never get my stereo that loud anyway. I live in an apartment. The Panasonic has a dual amp feature that lets me dual amp the fronts when using 5.1 instead of 7.1 so I'm pretty sure it provides more power than my Denon did.

When it is in stereo mode, it generates less HD. Simple as that. So when you are looking at the specs, pay attention to all channel driven. Also, testing frequency will impact THD. So 1KHz will give you a number and 20-20KHz another. Like I said, I hate these number games.

Output ratings in receivers are pretty wild. Ususally I would poick a Denon over Panasonic when it comes to reporting the correct spec. Dual amping in your case doesn't gain you anything.

The amp portions are the same, the major difference are dual-amp mode and DSP modes that the 55 has which the 70 does not.

Output at clipping:

6-channels 77.4W/channel

6-channel Analog performance THD @ 1 W = 0.04% THD
Dolby Digital THD @ reference level = 0.03% THD
PCM Stereo Performance THD @ reference level = 0.03% THD

Linearity error = 0.8db
Noise Modulation = 0.5db

These DAC numbers are superior to what Denon provides (although partly due to Denon mostly relying on the the older Burr Brown PCM1791A DAC).

As far as THD, almost all receivers not named Sony these days measure at ~0.03% THD at reference level, I assume in this day and age of oursourcing one of the likely reasons is most of these companies are using the same/similar supply source for their amps.
