I'm only on page 2 but felt compelled to respond.

People *were* dicks to the OP and I see no reason for it. You can answer someone's question and explain to them why something isn't realistic without doing it douche-style.

I own all 3 current gen consoles, a nice Samsung LED TV to go with them, a pair of $150 Sony wireless headphones for when I play at night and don't want to wake people, a $2000+ desktop PC and $1300 gaming Laptop that is still very viable and will be for a while, 100 plus games on Steam and shit tons of console games and non-steam PC games, lord knows how much I've spent on this hobby and none of this would ever incline me to look down on, or be a dick to someone with a lesser budget. I'd sympathize, and explain nicely to them why their expectation was unrealistic.

That is all I had to say.

I get tired of people wanting something for nothing. I can't afford a lot of things, but I don't expect someone to hand those things over to me for nothing. It happens all the time in the A/V world. People want the best, but don't want to pay for it. Sorry, you either pony up, or move on. It's as simple as that. You are not owed a PS3, no matter how much you think you need it. Sorry.

the PS3 is an amazing piece of tech and fairly cheap for what you get

the only time you get a $99 console with a game is when it's in the last year of production and all it does is play games. PS3 along with other products have to pay royalties to a bunch of patent consortiums

Oddly enough, I wouldn't pay $99 for a games only PS3, but I would pay $99 for a PS3 that did everything a normal PS3 did except play games.

Not just that, but the sale of hardware isn't their bread and butter. Until the slim, Sony lost money on each PS3 sale. They make it back on games, PSN and other stuff. You're paying for a piece of hardware, and as such it won't go below $200 realistically speaking, unless they find a way to cut cost.

I remember lining up and paying a nice premium for the first batch of ps3 with the backward chip installed. It was pretty awesome. Bottom line is if it satisfies your utility scale then it is well worth imo.

here you go:

http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-...4962821&sr=8-1

$200 on amazon right now ... if that is still "too damn expensive" to you, then you should find a new hobby.

That link shows $264 for some reason.

Here is GameStop for $199.99. The PS3 controller alone is about $40-50. So that's more or less getting the console/blu-ray player for $150. That's a pretty good deal.

This is what I do: I use my credit card and get reward points on it. It has no annual fee. Since consoles last 5-7 years, in that time I accumulate enough points to redeem gift cards to say BestBuy, etc. that let me get the console for "free." Once I get PS4 in 2013/2014, the cycle will start over. Every time you have to buy groceries, gas, etc. use some credit card with points (and if you are spending a lot, travel cards are the best ones to get!).

The console's almost 5 years old, yet it's still hard to find one under 200 bucks. Am I missing something? I'm trying to find one under $100. Am I crazy, or is this realistic?

There is another post on this board about $200 or $199 PS3s!

Cell had an enormous amount of hype going. To the point that 6 years later people still think it's awesome. But really, it was never even good when it came out.

It was always awesome. I suppose it comes down to whether a pro blames the tools... If they're only using one core, they're doing it wrong.

Hey, I got my used RROD launch X360 for $100. The only things I had to do to it were get it fixed by MS (free) and a couple of years down the line a new DVD drive (~$35). Still ticking right along, although my mods probably helped (cardboard shrouds and a few externally powered 40mm fans at low speed). So while I don't expect a brand new PS3 to be priced at $100, a used one in good condition isn't out of the question.
